Chapter Text

Leo dragged Rex by the hand weaving in and out through the cobblestone pathways with a huff. Rex merely smiled, knowing that he won at the impossible: getting Leo to go outside– moreover, getting him to go to a festival– let alone his own branch’s festival. It was a short-run victory, but a victory nonetheless.

The Captain of the Sea and the Sky turned to the Captain of the Snow and Frost every so often, just to make sure he wouldn’t break away from the vice grip on his hand, then pushed forward with a grunt. Rex finally spoke–a cat-like grin beaming on his features. “You’re real feisty today, eh?”

Leo yanked hard on Rex’s arm and the older of the two nearly face planted in the snow. Leo merely continued forward, staring the clearing with the clean little bench next to the warm stand selling mead with a grunt. Rex pouted. “What did I do?”

“Shut up already!” Leo hissed, stomping further into the snow. “I’m trying to find a nice, quiet place to work at the very least. I’m seriously backlogged tonight.”

Rex creased a brow. “The whole point of getting you out was to stop you from working, yeah?”

“...Yeah, well, it’s a no can do,” Leo sighed. “I’m sorry.”

The couple finally hit the bench with time to spare. Leo eagerly pulled out his reading glasses, a quill and some ink, and the uppermost layer of reports and started filing through them with a sharp breath of air. Rex merely watched, frowning. “You seem too excited to do this.”

“Just think,” Leo said gingerly, settling on a race report and sitting on Rex’s lap with a grin. “If I get this batch done by tonight, then half of my backlog from the captains before me will finally be completed– giving me some time to spend with you .”

Rex shook his head. “It’s always about work with you, isn’t it?”

Leo merely hummed– signing off report after report with a minute grin. Rex wrapped his arms around his snow bunny’s feeble body, resting his head right on the cranny of Leo’s shoulder, inhaling deep… low and slow, smelling a mix of hay and horses on the latter. “Tell me when you’re done, okay? I have something I want to show you.”

A curious side-eye from Leo’s glasses, and a pat on Rex’s silver locks was enough to relay an entire conversation. Rex finally sighed– closing his eyes and nodding off into the warmth of Leo’s body. While the festival went on– the hustle and bustle of the people, the shouts of the vendors, and the distant cries of the horses were heard– the snow-globe-like atmosphere that the two Captains shared was more than enough for them.

Just the two of them.
