Chapter Text

When Dennis and Valerie Rose woke up, they smelled coffee. This was not unusual for them, but was unusual was that the other was still in bed with them. They ended up talking briefly before coming to the rather cute, in their opinion, conclusion that Hermione had made them breakfast, or at least coffee. They got their robes on and headed downstairs.

What awaited them in the kitchen was far more than they had expected. Not only was coffee in the pot, but the pot was on the table, set for a full, simple breakfast of eggs, toast, and sausage. Far stranger than this, however, was Hermione, who appeared to have already eaten and cleaned her dishes, sitting and waiting for them with a presentation easel and pointer set up. “Oh, good, you’re up. Morning Mum, Dad. I hope you enjoy breakfast!” She said with that signature toothy smile of hers.

Dennis, as usual, recovered first. “Well this all looks excellent, pumpkin.” And he sat down to eat, but waited for his wife to join him, pouring their coffee in the meantime. As the parents customized their coffee, Valerie Rose, normally just Rose, spoke up. “Well, it seems you have something to say, dear?”

Hermione nodded, “Yes, I do. Several things, actually. First, I would ask that you put your coffee and forks down so there’s no accidents.” As they did so, Hermione reached under the table to pull out her beloved teddy bear, Queen Elizabeth Honeysmore. Only, when she put the bear down, it stood on its own. Hermione pointedly stepped away and held up her hands so they could plainly see she wasn’t doing anything to it as the bear began to dance. Dennis and Rose sat there, mouths agape, for a few moments, before Dennis intelligently asked, “Wh-b-huh?” Hermione went back to the table and moved the bear to the fourth side of the table where it picked up a pencil and began to awkwardly write on a piece of paper. Hermione only pointed to the bear by way of explanation. When the bear finished writing, it dropped the pencil and picked up the piece of paper, which was unreadable. “Upside down, Liz.” Hermione corrected before the bear rotated the paper right way up. It read, albeit crudely, “Magic is real”

Hermione broke the stunned silence. “I’m sure you have many questions, and I have prepared a small presentation to hopefully answer them.” She got up and opened the presentation pad on the easel to the first filled page.

So your Daughter is Magic
What does that mean?
What can she do?
Are there others?

“So, as it says, and as you have seen evidence of, I am magic. I… more or less discovered it this morning, Queen Elizabeth Honeysmore was doing a little dance. It was very cute.” Hermione cleared her throat for the half truth to continue, “Another way in which magic manifested this morning was that I suddenly had knowledge of the future. It’s limited, but if I seem to know something I shouldn’t, the answer is magic.” She had carefully constructed this to not technically be a lie, because she didn’t want to lie to her parents. A bit hypocritical perhaps, considering what she had done to them when the war started, but well, she wanted to do better this time around.

Dennis raised his hand, but Hermione hit him with the classic, “Please hold questions until the end of the presentation.” That got a smile out of her parents, and they began tentatively eating their breakfast as Hermione went on to explain that she had magic, which could do just about anything, and that there is a secret magical world that a ridiculous amount of effort went into to keep it hidden. She then ended the presentation with the request for a day-trip into London so she could show them more proof.

She ended the presentation with another classic, “Questions? Comments? Concerns?” Dennis once again put his hand up. When she motioned to him, he asked, “Can you explain exactly what ‘almost anything’ means?” She looked a little uncertain, “Not exactly. I can show you one more thing, but for anything more complex I would need a wand, and possibly a few textbooks and months of research for another presentation.” Rose encouraged her to show the aforementioned one more thing. Hermione grabbed a chopstick she had prepared for the demonstration. “Dad, can you break this?”

He did, and placed the two halves in the middle of the table. Hermione focussed hard. She had practiced some this morning on torn up paper. It was the first spell she had ever cast, and a less complicated variant, not to mention she had massive reserves of magic, and it was one of the spells she could cast silently back in the… future? Whatever. She had gotten it to work, so she tried again. “Reparo” She moved her hand in an approximation of the wand motion as well to aid her focus. Fortunately, it did work. The two halves of the chopstick spun to align their break points, then rejoined with a faint *whoosh* and a small wooden creak.

Dennis picked up the chopstick and tested it, handing it to his wife as well. They both found it good as new. It took a few moments of contemplation and looks before anyone felt ready to speak. It was Rose who spoke up next. “So, you know things from the future… Do you have a way to prove that?” Hermione tilted her hand side to side in a ‘sort of’ gesture. “Obviously there’s the stuff we can do in London I would have no other way of knowing, but anything else would take longer to pay off, and obviously anything involving your own choices you could change if I were to tell you. So I’m going to prove it threefold.” She held up three fingers. “First, the London business. Second, I’m going to use a part of my allowance on the stock market, because I know certain companies that will be very, very successful. Lastly, I know something that will happen tomorrow at your work. I’ve written it down in this envelope. I’m going to give it to you, and ask you not to open it until the end of work tomorrow.”

Dennis and Rose looked at each other, silent messages implied between them. Dennis looked back to his daughter, and saw the same driven child he’d always had, but with a twinkle of more behind her eyes. “Well dear, let’s take those in a reasonable order, alright? We’ll do the letter, and after that we can do a London outing this weekend, and if all that pans, we can talk about money. Sound fair?” Hermione grinned, and nodded, “Of course!”
