Chapter Text
Mumen rider was his best friend for many years. Today he was coming over and Saitama had forgotten that so he was confused who was knocking on the door as he and Genos lay together peacefully. He opened the door to Rider and smiled.
“Right you were coming over today.” Mumen looked at him confused for a second before replying with a smile.
“You seem really happy Saitama. Something good happen?” Saitama felt his face grow a bit hot. Mumen just laughed, “No need to tell me I’m just glad you’re happy. We still on for today?”
Saitama nodded then quickly added, “Is it okay if Genos comes with us though?”
“Of course, more the merrier!”
Off they went after a short pause to put on shoes. Mumen had invited him out a few weeks prior to their usual udon place. Which at the time he had only accepted to get Mumen off his back but today he was generally glad to be spending time with his friend.
They had a good time at the udon stand, the man running it didn’t follow things about villains and heroes so he served them with a smile. The food as always was amazing and it was nice to be out in the fresh air as the day turned to night.
Saitama let out a content sigh as they begun the walk home, deserted streets were nice at night.
Mumen cleared his throat and he and Genos turned to him.
“Saitama. Well I am really glad you’re happy there's something I want to talk to you about.”
If it counted as a reply he just stared at Mumen confused.
“I think it’s time to stop treating yourself like a villain, like I’ve said before you aren't a bad-”
“Mumen.” The tone was warning but he continued anyways.
“You aren't a bad guy Saitama. You’re just powerful and you need to work on your anger. You can still go back to being a good guy, I still see you as one.”
“Mumen listen dude. I appreciate it but it's not happening. I’ve killed people, I’m a bad guy. That’s it.”
“Saitama the heroes association barely follow your movements, they know how strong you are so they didn’t really fight back for the sake of the citizens. If you turned over a new leaf sure it would take time but I’m sure they would accept you. I-”
“Mumen! Just shut up!” His yell echoed across the the empty city block. Genos just stood there unsure of what to do, staring at the two, was this normal? Should he step in? Still Mumen continued.
“Saitama you're not a villain. It’s okay really. I could help you even we are friends after all Sai!” Saitama said nothing he stared at the ground fists clenched, hard enough that his knuckles were white. Saitama didn’t seem to be listening as Mumen kept trying to talk him into it. Trying to help him.
He was tapping his foot impatiently and Genos seemed to recognize this to be a habit, Saitama getting over fidgety before exploding. He ran forward to grab Saitama to distract him or something, Tell Mumen, who should really pay more attention, to shut it. But it was like the world was in slow motion.
He wasn’t fast enough, the foot tapping stopped as Saitama screamed something at Mumen who looked at him face full of shock at the outburst. Just in time to see a fist come towards him. Sure he tried to move out of the way but Saitama was much too fast and his fist went right through Mumen’s small intestine area.
There was a small bit of silence before the sound of a cough and blood spilling onto the ground was heard. Satama stood there looking surprised, fist still inside Mumen. A small voice rung out.
“I told you I can’t change M-mumen.” The rider gave a weak smile as Saitama let out sobs as the realisation of what he had done dawned on him. Mumen lets out a shaky breath before speaking.
“I don’t blame you for this Saitama, it’s okay.”
“IT’S NOT. It’s not Mumen. . . you’re d-dying.” Tears are running down his face as Mumen struggles to keep speaking.
“Saitama, listen to me. I’m really glad we met. No matter what happens, even this, we will always be friends. I’m okay with this. I just hope you can be happy. Genos can help you yeah?” Mumen’s voice comes out weaker and weaker as he talks. He keeps smiling and collapses on Saitama, not moving. No longer breathing.
Saitama is sobbing, hugging himself to his friend's corpse. Genos stands there for a while. Wishing he would have noticed earlier, acted sooner. After what feels like hours Saitama stands, feeling nub face covered in tears, clothes covered in blood.
He picks up Mumen’s body and starts walking, Genos follows a few paces behind, silently.
After a while of walking they arrive at a park in the middle of city Z Saitama places Mumen on the ground and then begins to dig. After a little while Genos begins to help him. Neither say anything, even as they finish the hole. Nore do they say anything after putting Mumen’s body into it and begin to cover it. Genos plants a single zinnia bushel on top of the grave and finally Saitama speaks.
“I met him here. At the bench over there.” He points to a bench a few steps over before continuing, “He thanked me for saving his life at the time.” Saitama just stared at the grave for a while longer before turning and starting the silent walk home.
