Chapter 70: Final Chapter: Chunhee’s Birthday Bash

Summary:

At Chunhee’s 7th birthday party, family and friends gathered in Sabi and Jae-il’s backyard to celebrate with laughter and gifts. Chunhee’s grandparents gave her a college fund and a trip to Disneyland. The party was filled with the children playing, heartfelt conversations among the adults, and good food. Chapter Text

The warm, spring sun shone down on the backyard of their house, where colorful balloons danced in the breeze and a banner stretched across the patio reading “Happy 7th Birthday, Chunhee!” The lawn was scattered with picnic tables decorated with pastel tablecloths, plates of cupcakes, and bright party hats, while Peanut pranced around wearing his own birthday bandana and Mochi looked on from his perch by the window, the eternal observer of human festivities.

Sabi adjusted the hem of her dress, making sure everything was just right, while Jae-il balanced a tray of grilled meats in one hand and tried to keep Chunhee from sneaking bites of the cake. Chunhee wore a sparkly pink crown and a wide grin that seemed impossible to erase.

“Eomma, can I have another cupcake?” Chunhee asked, eyes wide.

“After lunch,” Sabi teased, kissing the top of her daughter’s head.

Soon, the guests began to arrive, the first being Yiyoung and Dowon with their kids, Areum and Daehyun. Areum, three years old and full of energy, squealed in delight at the sight of the balloons. Daehyun, five, ran straight for the bouncy castle Jae-il had rented.

“Sabi-yah, this is so cute!” Yiyoung exclaimed, handing Sabi a box wrapped in floral paper. “Areum insisted we pick this one because it has sparkles.”

Sabi smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “She’s already got a good eye for birthday presents!”

Next came Namkyung and Gi-on, with their daughter Eunhye, also five, who immediately joined Daehyun in the bouncy castle. “Looks like the kids are going to sleep well tonight,” Namkyung said, handing Jae-il a tin of her famous homemade tteokbokki.

“Thanks for this,” Jae-il grinned, his mouth already watering. “I’ve missed your tteokbokki.”

“Save some for me this time!” Gi-on laughed.

Sol and Joonhwi arrived with Haneul and Haru, who dashed over to Chunhee, their best friend, and started showing off the small, hand-wrapped gift they’d made. “It’s a bracelet!” Haru said proudly. “We made it ourselves!”

Chunhee’s eyes sparkled as she hugged both of them. “I love it, Oppa! Thank you!”

Sabi’s brother Junsu and his wife Hyejin arrived last, with their kids Junwoo and Bomi in tow. Junwoo, nine, immediately challenged Daehyun to a race around the yard while Bomi, six, shyly clutched Hyejin’s hand until Chunhee took her to the bouncy castle.

After everyone settled in, Sabi’s parents called Chunhee over and handed her a neatly wrapped envelope. Chunhee’s small hands fumbled with it, and inside she found a certificate.

“It’s for your college education, uri Chunhee,” her grandfather explained, his eyes warm. “We’ve started saving so you’ll always have a choice to do whatever you want.”

"Thank you, Harabeoji, Halmeoni!" Chunhee, smiling widely hugged both grandparents.

Sabi’s eyes glistened. “Thank you, Appa, Eomma,” she said, her voice full of emotion.

Jae-il’s parents, not to be outdone, presented Chunhee with a sparkly Disney-themed card. “We’ve planned a family trip to Disneyland,” his mother announced. “All expenses paid - plane tickets, hotels, everything.”

Chunhee’s jaw dropped, and then she squealed, leaping into both her grandparent’s arms. “Thank you so much, Harabeoji, Halmeoni!” And she runs back to the kids table.

Grinning from ear to ear. “Haru, Oppa! I’m going to meet Mickey Mouse!”

'That is so cool, Chunhee-yah!" Haru beamed at her.

Jae-il chuckled, his heart bursting at the sight. He mouthed thank you to his parents.

After the gifts were presented, everyone gathered around the long picnic table. Yiyoung’s Areum sat next to Chunhee, giggling at the party hats, while Dowon balanced Daehyun on his knee, feeding him a piece of tteok. Namkyung and Gi-on chatted about the latest research papers they were reviewing, while Sol and Joonhwi discussed Haneul’s school dance coming up.

Junsu raised his glass of sparkling apple juice. “To Chunhee,” he said warmly, “and to all the memories and milestones ahead.”

Everyone echoed the sentiment, raising their glasses high.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, Sabi, Jae-il, Yiyoung, Dowon, Namkyung, and Gi-on stood together for a moment, watching their kids chase each other around the yard. It felt surreal sometimes, thinking back to those grueling days of residency when they’d shared on-call shifts, fast-food dinners, and the occasional meltdown in the residents' lounge.

“Can you believe we’re here now?” Namkyung murmured, her eyes soft. “Professors. Parents.”

Gi-on laughed. “Don’t forget survivors. We made it through the worst of it.”

Dowon raised an eyebrow. “And now we’re teaching the next generation.”

Sabi smiled at Jae-il, who pulled her close. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” he whispered.

Chunhee ran up just then, holding a piece of tteok between her fingers. “Appa, open your mouth!” she demanded, giggling as she popped it in.

Jae-il chewed dramatically, earning laughter from the entire group.

Peanut pranced by with a party hat askew, looking pleased with himself, while Mochi - perched atop a patio chair - eyed the scene with that same unimpressed gaze he’d perfected over the years.

Sabi ruffled Chunhee’s hair and looked around at the people who had become family in every way that mattered. They had weathered heartbreaks, victories, and uncertainties together, and now they were here, celebrating a child who had been born from all those struggles and triumphs.

She thought of the college fund, the Disneyland trip, the laughter of kids who called each other cousins even though their parents weren’t related by blood, and the strength that had grown in every one of them over the years.

“Happy birthday, my Chunhee,” she whispered. “May every year be even brighter than the last.”

Jae-il kissed the top of Chunhee’s head, his eyes warm. “And may you always know just how loved you are.”

As the first stars began to appear in the sky, Sabi knew in her heart that no matter what the future held - more challenges, more growth, more laughter and tears - they would face it together, as they always had.

And with that, the party continued - a celebration not just of Chunhee’s birthday but of the remarkable journey that had led them all to this backyard, on this perfect evening, surrounded by love.

Please bear with me. I wrote this entirely for personal consumption (personal consumption?!) but decided to share so we could delulu together. 😂

Apologies for the inconsistencies and imperfections - this is just me, deep in my Umbi/Jaebi/Sail brainrot. I actually didn't realize I still have it in me. I mean, the last time I wrote something like this was way back in high school. This Umbi brainrot is bringing back my creativity and drive. 🫣

Heeelp! I can't seem to stop myself from writing about them. 😅
