Chapter Text

You, Subayai [Name], were always the quickest at things. Quick to finish chores, quick to complete games, and quick to get your first job. So, in your first year of high school, you’ve got your own little apartment. You take one last satisfied look at your apartment, and speed out, making sure to lock the door behind you. Humming a tuneless melody, you take a couple of laps around your apartment building before checking the time. Early, as usual. You decided you’d take a few rounds around your new neighborhood, just to consume time, before walking to school.

Continuing on your speedy walk to school, there was a yell that blasts your eardrums from all the way in the ocean. “THE OCEAANNNNN!!!”

Your face contorts into a grimace. This definitely wasn’t an event that you anticipated you’d see at all. ‘What the hell… you thought, seeing a black haired boy wearing your school uniform swimming erratically in the ocean like he’d never seen it before. Well, you would have loved to do that too, but you definitely couldn’t let people see that you were weird on the first day.. Right? At this point, you were a bit concerned about the mental well being of your fellow schoolmates, but as you glance around, other students wearing the same exact uniform were ignoring the boy. Following suit, you resume walking once more when it suddenly becomes quiet. A breeze brushes past your ear, prompting you to turn your head to where the boy was before.

He’s.. HE’S DROWNING!!

You whip your head back and forth, spotting absolutely no one going to the kid’s rescue. ‘ Aw, man. I don’t wanna go, though. The ocean doesn’t seem that nice today. ’ As you debate mentally, a ginger blur flies past you, shouting something about valuing human lives. You watch for a second as the boy struggles to pull the other out before jumping the fence yourself. “Hey! Need help?” you shout, right before tripping and slamming your face into the ground. ‘ Well.. that’s embarrassing. ’ You stand up in a nonchalant manner and rush to help the boys, pulling the black haired boy out of the water.

“Are you alive?!” The ginger asks, before getting interrupted.

“THE OCEAN’S TERRIFYIN’!!!!” The yell pierces both your and the other boy’s ears, surprising both of you. “Mother ocean, huh?! I felt like I was gonna be KILLED! MORE LIKE A STEPMOM TRYIN’ TO GET INSURANCE MONEY!!” The boy’s voice got louder and louder, prompting you to stand up with a deadpan expression. ‘ What an idiot. ’ You think to yourself, and meeting the ginger’s green eyes, he clearly thought the same. “Wait~ Just now, you were thinking to yourself, right~?” Your expression never changed, but your interest was certainly piqued, and you stop in your tracks. “You were thinking ‘This dude can’t swim’, yeah? Well, that’s not true, okay~~?! Something dragged me under! Isn’t that scary~?”

What the hell is this guy saying? ’ You really couldn’t take it. This guy was for sure an idiot. The boy continues, saying, “I’m actually super athletic, but that scared me soo bad~~” ‘ Why are you still talking?

“Um.. why were you swimming?” A question comes out of the ginger, prompting an answer from the other boy.

His red eyes move towards the ground as he responds with “I.. grew up in the mountains, so I got all excited when I saw the ocean..”

What an idiot!

“Oi! Where are ya going, clumsy?” The ravenette shouts as you begin to walk away, already halfway back to the bridge.

“Ain’t it obvious? I’m leaving, stupid.” Suddenly, you were gone in a blink, leaving the two boys behind.

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Right as you make it to the school, the bell sounded, signaling the start of school. ‘ Well, looks like those two are fucked.. ’ You sit down in a chair at the assembly, crossing your arms while waiting for it to start, leg bouncing impatiently. You knew that obviously people would be late, but wasn’t it weird that the assembly couldn’t even start, especially since you were on time , rather than early, for the first time in your life? You groan, your head lolling back when the doors slammed open, someone’s loud voice quieting the chatter in the room.

“Woah, they’re soaked.”

“Whaat?!”

“Wow, gross.”

“An accident?”

Murmurs and muffled laughter begin to surface as you stare at the boys. They’re the ones you left behind, huh? Both were drenched, and yet you could tell from the red eyed boy’s expression that he one hundred percent did not expect this. “Umm.. The student covered in water who just came in is the student representative, Eugene Korekishi.” The voice quiets the chatter from the students, and from Koreishi’s expression, he clearly was fried.

You watch as the ravenette ashamedly takes the seat behind you, and you tilt your head back up to watch the ginger walk up to the stage, ready to recite the school oath. ‘ His name’s Eugene, huh? Must be a foreigner. ’ You had to stifle a laugh as Korekishi recites the oath, saying, “We, the newly incoming students, feel refreshed as we don our brand new uniforms..” in his sopping wet uniform. ‘ That’s not convincing at all!

You feel a tap on your shoulder, and turning around, you saw the red eyed boy. Immediately, you whip your head right back, not wanting to have anything to do with him. “Aw, c’mon! I just wanna say thanks for saving me back there.”

Your eye twitches as you turn back around to face the boy. “‘Kay. Is that it?”

The boy grinned at you, before telling you his name without any prompting. “I’m Shishikuno Mogari! What about you?” You squint your eyes at Mogari before answering.

“..I’m Subayai [Name]. Nice to meet you, I guess.”

“Wow, we should trade numbers! ‘Cause, we’re like, friends now, right?” Mogari gives you a toothy grin, and you trade numbers, much to your disappointment as you couldn’t find the courage to say no to him. Korekishi sighs heavily as he sits down next to Mogari, giving you a strained smile before suddenly letting out a bloodcurling scream.

“AAAAAHH!!!!”

Damn, my ears are gonna break at this rate..

“W-what is it?” Mogari asks as Korekishi begins mumbling.

“...Gone. My grandma’s bracelet is gone.”

Oh, how you would have loved to stay in your cozy little apartment. However, you slip on your uniform, make a quick snack, and lock the apartment door before zooming to the sea. “Hey~! I’m here, Shishikuno!!” You tumble off the railing as he shines at the light in your eyes, falling face first just as you did before. You stand up, brush yourself off like nothing happened, and rush to Mogari to kick him in the shins. “Damn, bro. Don’t shine that shit into my eyes like that!”

“Ack, I get it! Sorry, ma’am.” Mogari bends over, holding his leg in pain, dropping the flashlight during the act. You pick up the flashlight, wanting to get this over with quickly. “Didn’t think you’d actually come..” He mutters, standing up and rolling his sleeves up.

“Aight, let’s go.” You roll your head, cracking your neck. “I wanna get this over with fast .”

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Thunder crackles as a storm begins brewing, and you stare up at the sky, squinting. ‘ Really? A storm, in the middle of the night? ’ You hadn’t brought an umbrella, but you had put your jacket under the bridge, where it would stay dry as you searched for Korekishi’s bracelet. “Hey, Shishikuno! Did you bring an umbrella?” You shout Mogari’s name, shining the flashlight in the general direction that he was the last time you saw him.

His drenched figure turns towards you, yelling a faint, “WHATTT??” Your eye twitches, and you stalk over there so quickly that he had no idea you were even coming.

“Did you bring an umbrella?” You know it’s not his fault that he can’t hear over the waves, but honestly? You were feeling kind of pissed at the slow pace you were going at, but you would try not to take out your anger on him. “It’s fine if you didn’t, but.. Nevermind. It wouldn’t make a difference..” Seeing Mogari up close really made you want to laugh. He kinda looked like a drenched puppy, but a flush settles across your face as you see his shirt cling to his body. ‘ Damn, he’s fucking jacked.

Mogari’s toothy grin appears in front of you, eyebrows waggling. “What’d you just say?”

Shit. I said that aloud, didn’t I? ’ You groan, shoving the flashlight into his hands. “None of your business.”

“Nah, I think it’s veeerry much my business.” He stops you in your tracks, shining the flashlight at you. “What’d you say?”

“You’re built. That’s it.” You roll your eyes, pushing the flashlight down with a finger so it wouldn’t shine into your eyes.

“‘Course I am~! I’m super athletic, y’know!” Mogari lets out a laugh, sounding completely unfazed.

“There’s no way. You were literally drowning yesterday!” You snort, covering your mouth. ‘ Thank goodness he’s dumb.

Mogari panics, shaking his head vigorously. “No no, I’m telling you! It was a ghost! G-H-O-S-T!”

It doesn’t feel like he’s lying, but you really can’t bring yourself to listen to him. “Okay, buddy. It would be cool to see one, though.”

“Aw, you don’t believe me?” Mogari pouts, shining the light into your eyes.

You let out an undignified grunt, snatching the flashlight quicker than he can react. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” The storm lets up, and in a few minutes, it calms down. “Let’s keep looking.”

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

Man, I didn’t think that it would take this long.. ’ You grumble internally, the wind whipping your blue hair into your eyes. The storm had started up again, just a minute before. “Oi!” You yelp as Mogari stands up, knocking you over and drenching you even more. “Be careful, idiot!”

“Sorry, sorry!” Mogari apologizes as he offers you a hand to help you up. While you take it, a sudden yell comes from the bridge above you two.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!” You turn up, spotting Korekishi staring down at the both of you with a terrified expression.

“I’M REALLY SORRYY~!” Mogari shouts, followed by you. “WE HAVEN’T FOUND IT YET! IT’S A SILVER KEY, RIGHT?!” A wave crashes into the both of you, prompting a small yelp from Mogari and coughing from you.

Damn, got me straight in the mouth.

You watch as the flashlight disappears, Mogari mumbling that he’d borrowed it from the night fishing guy.

“IT’S DANGEROUS!” Korekishi shouts, running down to meet up with the two of you. “Night fishing.. You guys have been looking for that long? It’s definitely gone by now..” You sneeze, rubbing your hands on your arms quickly to warm yourself up. Korekishi frowns, slipping off his blazer and wrapping you up in it, prompting a mumbled “Thanks” from you. Meanwhile, Mogari says something, only to be muffled by the wind. “Huh? What was that?” Korekishi asks, tilting his head slightly.

“The key. Where does it go? Isn’t it important for opening something?”

I can’t believe this idiot. ’ And clearly Korekishi couldn’t either. You stand up, eyes dead as you stare down at Mogari.

“..You two were soaking wet for an entire night while thinking that?”

Your head flips towards Korekishi, sputtering. “I definitely wasn’t! It was all this idiot!”

Before he can respond, Mogari gives a shout, dropping to his knees. “Y-you said it’s a memento! So I thought, since it’s your grandma’s memento, IT’S DEFINITELY A MAGIC KEY, RIGGHHHHT?!?” His voice grew more shrill with each word, desperately clinging onto a reason.

Korekishi stares at Mogari as if he’s stupid. So did you, even though you knew that Mogari really thought the key went somewhere. “Are you a romantic or something?” Korekishi asks in disbelief, before breaking out into laughter. “Ahahaha! You’re-You’re really weird!” He holds out a hand to Mogari to help him up. “The key’s just a charm. It can’t open anything. Really, it’s fine. I don’t need a magical key. To make up for the trouble I caused you.. I’ll show you around Kamakura.” Mogari’s dumbfounded expression lights up in a radiant smile.

Huh. So he can be cute, too. Shame he’s an idiot.

“You got it!” Mogari says with a grin, taking Korekishi’s hand while you stand behind them.

“Ugh!” You let out an undignified grunt as the waves crash against your legs. “Damn, they’re getting stronger.”

Korekishi makes a noise of agreement, about to say something when he slips- no, dragged into the ocean. You react quickly, grabbing the boy’s hand and using all your strength to hold him up.

“Shishikuno, hurry your ass up and help me !!”

“Whoaaa! Sorry, you’re fast!” Mogari grabs Korekishi’s other arm, directing his next question towards him. “Did you just slip?!?”

“N-no, I didn’t! There’s something..! My foot!” Korekishi’s obviously panicked, and you start yelling out plausible reasons.

“Could it be seaweed?? Or aquatic life??” Deep down, you had this gut feeling that it wasn’t. Perhaps what Mogari had said before held some truth to it, after all.

“Hang in there, Korekishi!” Mogari shouts, tugging on his arm. “Don’t let yourself get dragged into the ocean, no matter what! Or else.. I dunno if I’ll be able to save you!”

“THAT’S NOT HELPING!!” You scream, gripping tighter on Korekishi’s arm. “I’M DEFINITELY NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD HIM BY MYSELF!!” You slip, but catch yourself with your other hand, struggling to get back up.

Korekishi’s about as calm as one can be when getting dragged into the ocean. “MY ARM!! MY ARM’S GONNA COME OFF HURRY AND SAVE MEEEE!!!”

Mogari’s dead eyes don’t match his smile. “It’ll be ok! I’m always practicing how to breathe through gills in the bath tub!” His legs begin slipping, prompting you to tug as hard as you can to keep the three of you from falling.

“YOU ALREADY GAVE UP?!?!?” Both you and Korekishi scream in unison, and as you try to get up from the floor, Mogari lets out a sneeze.

“Ah.”

“AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” Both you and Korekishi scream once more, your strength not nearly enough to hold the both of you. You might be fast, but you’re a hundred percent not strong. Suddenly, a boy with light gray hair grabs onto Korekishi’s free arm.

“Who- Who are you?” Mogari blinks, grabbing onto Korekishi’s arm once more.

“..Kamakura Samurai..”

Huh..? It’s another weird guy. I really need to stop meeting these kinds of people..

“Th-Thanks a lot..” You mumble, confused.

The boy’s face contorts into a grimace. “Not me! The thing pulling on him.. Is an “Ochimusha.”

“Huh?”

“Eh?”

Both you and Mogari make a confused noise, before something seems to change in Mogari. You see his expression shift, something reflected in his eyes, but you can’t make it out at all.

“A HUGE FUCKING OCHIMUSHA GHOOOST!!!!” He shrieks, grabbing onto your arm. You squint, but you still can’t see anything at all.

“What are you saying??” Korekishi yells, expression showing that he’s just as confused as you are.

You tighten your grip on his arm, struggling to keep your footing. “I’m not sure, but it looks like they see something..?”

The new boy begins to say something, before getting interrupted by Mogari. “YOU! I can finally see now! This is amazing, good job!!”

“Eh?” The boy’s eyes, a muted shade of purple, widened in shock and both confusion.

“I can’t see ‘em unless I borrow someone else’s spiritual power. Stay like that, keep touching me.”

“What.. Just happened?” You ask. Obviously, you’re confused, but your question doesn’t get answered.

“What are you gonna do?? It’s useless to try and deal with spirits..”

“Nah. I can see them, so they’re on my turf now.” Mogari rolls out his tongue, showing off a previously unseen tattoo. ‘ Damn, that’s kinda hot. And freaky. ’ You clap a hand over your face. ‘ Now is not the time for this! ’ Mogari tilts his head, seemingly coming to realization. “Hang on, I bet you were the one messing with my leg yesterday.” He turns to you, eyes shining. “I told you something was messing with me! I’m super duper athletic!”

“Oi, if you can do something about it, let’s start with that, can you??” You shout, feeling a weird sense of impending doom. “We can talk about that later !”

Mogari shrugs, turning back to the ghost. “Dunno if you’re just playing pranks or if you still have a final message after death. You probably have your reasons, but... we’re still alive, so from now on, we gotta start going to school.” He jumps up, impossibly high, taking the other boy with him.

“I’ll just go ahead and eat you whole.”

Both you and Korekishi are on the ground, staring at Mogari tearing away at flesh(? Or whatever ghosts have). He devours it like a rabid animal, teeth biting into invisible meat.

“Y-You’re.. Eating the spirit!?! Who the hell are you..?” The purple eyed boy asks as Mogari finishes.

“I’m Mogari Shishikuno, a high schooler in the prime of his youth.” He turns to the three of you, light shining down upon him like some shoujo manga intro, pointing to himself with his thumb. “And sometimes, an exorcist!”

“Pfft–” You choke back a laugh, all the tension in your body being released. “Why are you trying so hard to be cool?”

“Wh-” Mogari sputters, shaking his head. “I’m not trying, I just am!”

“Sure buddy.” You get up, offering Korekishi a hand. “Let’s get to class, shall we?”

˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

“So he’s here to exorcise spirits?” You ask, pushing yourself from off the wall where you were leaning, lollipop in your mouth. “Sounds like a bunch of fun.” You crack your neck, holding your bag with one arm.

“Can you two help me with exorcisms, then?” Mogari asks, eyes shining.

Korekishi sends a surprised look your way, and then directs it back towards Mogari. “Why are you asking this?? And I can’t sense spirits at all, so I can do anything.”

You shrug. “I dunno, maybe it’s ‘cause he needs your smarts, since he’s a little..” You trail off, giggling when Mogari smacks you playfully. “I mean, I’m totally in. But I’m the same as Korekishi. I can’t sense spirits. Or do anything with them, really.”

“Yeah, but you’re fast! You literally zoomed into the school waay before we were able to, and you reacted quicker than I did when Koreshiki here got grabbed! You’re for sure gonna be super helpful!” Mogari says all of this in one breath, grinning at you with that contagious positivity. You chuckle as he continues. “Let’s go ask him for help too! Y’know, the one who can see them.”

“Ah, you mean Kanzaki. He’s a new student like us.” Korekishi informs you due to your confused look.

“I thought of something when I came here, did you know?” Mogari smirks. “I’ll gather all the people who can sense spirits and start a club!! Our name will be.. PHANTOM BUSTERS!!!!”

Once an idiot, always an idiot, huh?

“You plagiarized that from Ghost Busters.” Both you and Korekishi say in unison, giving each other a knowing look.

“What~ No, I didn’t~ It’s out of respect, y’know~” Mogari makes a face that clearly spells bullshit. You shake your head, laughing while Mogari continues. “But, if we can’t see the spirits, then we can’t deal with them. Which means we can’t start the club. Whether we succeed or not all depends on that Kanzaki!”
