Chapter Text
“I'll go with Chris Chim, you take Buck Ravi, you with Chim, Mia, you're with me, let's get a move on, let's go, let's go.”
Eddie moves closer to where Buck and Chris are, trying to see and hear what's going on. “I'll go with Chris Chim, you take Buck Ravi, you with Chim, Mia, you're with me, let's get a move on, let's go, let's go.”
Eddie moves closer to where Buck and Chris are, trying to see and hear what's going on. As Bobby tries to stop him, Eddie sees Buck and Chris with Bruns on their legs. Buck looks more severe, but Chris is really bad on his arm and has a bad cut on it, too.
“Hen, how bad is it? Don't you lie to me, earther. This is my son and my Buck, don't lie to me, know.” Eddie said, panicked, not wanting to lose his 11-year-old son or his best friend
“Eddie, im not going to lie to you, it's not good, but you need to stay here with Bobby, Maddie will meet you at the hospital, okay.”
“Okay, I love you, Chris. Dad is right here, okay. I love you, Buck. Stay strong for me.” Eddie said as the doors closed.
It was five minutes into the ride when they stopped CPR.
“Chim, why are you stopping? We have to save him.”
“Ravi, look at me, he's gone, okay, we can't do anything more, he has no reaction in his pupils. I'm pretty sure he's brain-dead, Ravi. We've intubated him and even done CPR for 30 minutes. im sorry, Ravs, we cant do anything more.”
“Yes, we can, we can continue CPR and start a line if you're not going to,” Ravi said, trying not to cry.
“Okay, we can do that, but it's not going to change anything. We can try, but it most likely won't work.” Chim said
“I know I just cant tell Maddie we did nothing more than what we could, and I know you're the paramedic, but I think you want to be able to tell your girlfriend we did everything to save her baby brother,” Ravi said
“I know I do, so we can try, but his pupils are non-reactive, so we might not be able to save him, okay .”
“Okay.”
They continued CPR until they arrived at the hospital, and intubated him, and started an IV for fluids en route. They arrived, and Chimney stared his report right away, not even realizing Eddie was right there. If he did, he would have said it definitely, but he also would have wanted him to know the truth.
“We have a 28-year-old male from a fire; he has major burns to his legs. We got him out, but he was pinned at his lower back, and it looks like major head damage with cuts and burns. Pupils are not equal or reactive, but he has a strong pulse after 15 minutes of CPR. He also has an allergy to neprocson.” Chimney said
As they moved, Buck thought the glass door Chimney couldn’t move; he didn’t even realize as Eddie moved closer to him.
Eddie put a hand on Chims' shoulder and started to speak, “What do you mean, major head and back trauma? Is he going to be okay?” Eddie said with tears in his eyes.
“ We had to pull him out first, he was on top of Chris, I think he was doing his best to protect him because when we got in there he was protecting his head or he was going to start CPR, I dont know.”
“Chim, you didn't answer the question.”
“Th-th” Chim had to take a deep breath before he continued. “There was a beam and part of the roof that was his back, and he had major cuts on the back of his head as well as some burns there. There was a small fire there. I don't want to go into detail about it, but I think that's how Chris got his cut.” Chimney was crying at this point, able to breathe.
“ Chim, what do you mean? I need to answer this. Do you think he's going to survive this?” Eddie asked, panicked because Chimney was just standing there, not responding. “Howerd answer me do you think he's going to live?” Eddie hated calling Chimney Howard, but it got him to answer at least.
“Chris, I think so, I hope so, I dont know what happened on the way here, minus the usual CPR intubation and C collar. But Buck, I dont think so, or if he does, he's never going to be the same, he'll probably be in a vegetative state forever. Eddie, Im sorry. I know you guys are close, but Ravi had to convince me to continue trying to save his life because I knew there was nothing that I could do besides continuing CPR and giving him pain meds so he would be comfortable. Im so sorry, Eddie. If you heard the report, then you know he's probably not going to make it off the table, and if he does, he's probably never going to wake up. Im so so so so sorry, Eds.” Chimney is unable to breathe normally at this point and collapses into Eddie. Eddie was fast to react to grabbing the O2 off the truck and helped Chim in when he was ready, and they met up with the rest of the 118, Maddie, and Athena.
As the Doctors rushed into the room, they noticed the wrist brace that was meted onto his wrist along with the other damage. As they rushed him to the OR, they paged an orthopedic, barin, and general surgeons to the surgery. Buck had major swelling in his brain which required bur holes to relieve the pressure, but he also needed back surgery to fix the small break that was there, causing the spinal cord to swell. But they would know if he was going to be able to walk until his burns were cured, but with the blood loss, the burns on his head, they didn't have clear access to do stitches, so they had to pack and hope he wouldn’t bleed out.
The surgery took about 10 hours to complete. It was mainly the burns that made it only about 1 ½ longer, but he only had on small bleed, and his appendix needed to be removed, but other than that, he should be okay, no major organ damage, mines the open wounds on the back of his head.
