I Don’t Wanna Be Me

Chapter 2: The Calm Before The Storm

Summary:

Okay. Okay. Ochako will, in fact, be dying. She didn’t want to intrude on this moment; she didn’t want to disrupt the calm before the storm, not even by breathing.

Notes:

Hello guys im so sorry about the wait!! I have 3 separate campuses I go to for school as well as a job, it took me a while to learn how to balance all of that

I hope you enjoy!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A few hours later, most of the food had been eaten and Kaminari had fallen asleep, splayed across Jirou who was just minding her own business on a sleeping bag and nobody had spoken in hours, even Mina.

Ochako finally spoke up, speaking around the pocky stick she had in her mouth.

“Shouldn’t we… like… text Midnight? The game night is tomorrow so…” Ochako trailed off, hanging herself upside down on the edge of the bed.

“Oh my gosh you’re so right!” Mina exclaimed, her energy suddenly coming back to her, giggling as she pulled out her phone.

Pinky

<< TYSMTYTY!!!

“Great news! Midnight-sensei is totally willing to help, no strings attached!” Mina breathed the last part with a sigh of relief and reached over to pluck a donut out of Kirishima’s hand.

Kirishima plastered a look of mock betrayal onto his face. “Hey! That’s totally not manly!” After a few seconds, he tacked on, “But it’s very manly that Midnight-sensei is willing to help, it will make this whole thing a lot easier!”

Kaminari was finally beginning to stir from his awkward position that had to have been killing Jirou’s arm.

“Wait, what… what’s going on?”

“Midnight is able to help us. You sleep like a rock, by the way, absolutely insane,” Jirou responded, finally able to shake off the blond boy and massage her arm.

“Now that our plan is more or less settled, I’m going to head back to my room. It’s quite late. Ashido, let me know if you would like help cleaning this up tomorrow.” Todoroki stood up, dusted a variety of crumbs off himself, and walked to the door.

“Aww, Roki, you know you can call me Mina. Goodnight, sleep tight!”

Todoroki’s departure soon caused the rest of the people in the room to check the time, and a collective groan was let out. Jirou and Ochako threw their heads backwards in frustration as Kaminari was making grabbing gestures with his hands from his spot on the ground, a silent plea for someone to pick him up from his position.

Kirishima let out a small chuckle and took a few steps over to give Kaminari his hand and drag him up.

“I cannot believe we have been in a war and are about to be professional heroes, and you’re still pulling lazy stunts like that,” Jirou snarked jokingly.

“I cannot believe we’ve been through a war and are about to be pro heroes and we still have to play wingman for two out of the Big Three, but here we are,” was Kaminari’s quite reasonable retaliation.

“Touché.”

“Goodnight guys!”

“Night!”

“Goodnight!”

“See you guys tomorrow!”

School went by in a blur; everyone involved was too full of anticipation for the night, making it impossible for them to pay attention, but the one thing that Ochako vividly remembers from the classes was Midnight shooting an obnoxious wink toward Mina that was returned with an exaggerated thumbs up and a wide smile.

Should Ochako warn Izuku?

Probably.

She caught up with Izuku on the route back to the dorms, greeting him with a bright smile. “Hi Deku! Are you ready for the game night tonight?”

“Ready? Ready for what?” Izuku inquired, “But I am excited for game night! I always love when the class spends time together, especially when Kacchan decides to join,” Izuku trailed off into mutters, presumably about the roles everyone will take tonight.

You know what?

Nevermind.

Ochako has put up with this man’s pining for so long; he can deal with being a little (lot) blindsided.

No warning, it is.

Jirou

>> yea she has no clue

~

The hours between the classes came and went. Ochako wouldn’t lie and say she wasn’t getting clammy at the mere idea of what was going to occur that night. Midnight had little to no plan. Someone outside of the planning (cough cough Iida) might step in and prevent it if they knew the plan, Kaminari could fuck the entire thing over in the blink of an eye, and most importantly, the plan was actually, genuinely, 100% crazy

Chargebolt changed group name to ‘bkdk schemers

Midnight

>> ugh why did i become a teacher

~

Ochako made eye contact with Jirou as she went down the hall to Denki’s dorm, Jirou’s smile of acknowledgement looking more like a wince. Ochako cocked her head in curiosity and finally arrived at Denki’s door.

“How long have you been standing out here?”

“Like, almost 5 minutes,” Jirou said with a sigh, “I don’t even think I feel all that guilty for tricking them, just because I know it’s best for both of them.”

“But it’s a big thing, it could change our class dynamics, it could upset them, and we don’t even know what the full plan is,” Ochako responded sympathetically, placing a hand on Jirou’s shoulder comfortingly.

“Yeah. Yeah, exactly.”

Ochako reached for the door handle, took a deep breath in tandem with Jirou’s exasperated huff, and pushed the door open.

“Finally! I was wondering when you two would get here.”

“Sorry, this whole thing is just,” Jirou paused for dramatic effect, “genuinely, truly insane.”

Momo lifted her hand delicately from where she was standing and muttered, “I concur.”

“There is nothing to discuss.” Everybody’s heads snapped towards Shoto in the corner.

Kirishima then tacked his own comment on, making everyone turn towards him with even more exasperation. “He’s right, Kaminari has just been using this as an emotional support group for the potential outcomes.”

“Duddeeeeee,” Denki drawled, adding an ‘uh’ sound to the end of the word, “You didn’t have to say it like that.”

“How else would he have said it?” Shoto inquired, “It’s exactly what's going on.”

Denki stuttered in his attempt to defend himself, “Yea, B-but, it’s not exactly like that, I swear I had a better reason to get everyone here.”

“Which is?” Jirou snapped back, crossing her arms and angling herself to the door, clearly intending to leave. Upon hearing no response, she opened the door and left, being quietly followed by Momo and Ochako.

“Damn she mad mad.”

“KAMINARI.”

The time has come. Pillows and blankets covered the common room; the kitchen countertop cannot be seen past the amount of takeout containers and snacks piled atop it. It looked like any other class game night, but it felt vaguely festive. Like Christmas Eve, lying in bed, so excited that the anticipation turns into a jittery anxiety that won’t dissipate even after all the gifts have been opened. The feeling was intense enough that Ochako worried that everybody else would be able to tell something’s up. Well, it wouldn’t be shocking if they did. Hopefully, they wouldn’t point it out.

Jewelry jingled as Mina walked into the room, alerting Ochako to her presence. “You excited?” Mina asked, tapping her nails on a sliver of countertop that was still exposed. Without waiting for a response, Mina continued, “Midnight wants us to meet her outside; she finally has something.”

“Awesome! Let’s go!”

~

Midnight clasped her hands together and sucked in a sharp inhale. “I’m only telling you two, I’m afraid telling anyone else may potentially compromise tonight, so here go–” “What about Yaomomo?” Mina cut in.

“Yayorozu, ah. I’m not particularly concerned about her interrupting the plan, but I do not believe she would want to risk that possibility.”

“Oh.” Very eloquent, Mina.

“So here’s the deal. I’m running off the media class bullet point from your brainstorming. I’m going to interrupt with the purpose of doing something productive–” she punctuated the word with air quotes, “–but still fun, so I’ll play into the idea of game night to mix in with the activity. After all, some of the best publicity can come from social media posts that one was dared to post.”

“And how will you incorporate game night?” Ochako questioned.

“Great question! Spin the bottle.” Midnight looked giddy at this prospect. Mina and Ochako, on the other hand, were thoroughly confused.

“And… how would that work?” Mina, of all people, of all the plotters, schemers, and chaotic wingmen, had the most outlandish ideas, but somehow still couldn’t find Midnight’s association.

“Won’t lie, it could take forever. But I figured since spin the bottle is hard to manipulate, it would raise less suspicion.” Ochako hadn’t even considered this, and judging by Mina’s attentive nod paired with her mouthing ‘ohhh’, neither had she. “The idea is that we will be making duo videos to unite the individual fanbases of every student in 3-A while having fun and showcasing an authentic dynamic.”

Mina squealed. “Midnight-sensei. Holy. Shit. You’re my favorite teacher now. Well, you have been since first year, but now you’re extra my favorite.”

Midnight lets out a chuckle before grabbing the girls by their shoulders and turning them back to the door.

Mina turned to Ochako. “You ready?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Perfect, let’s go.”

~

The class slowly trickled into the common room as the official “start time” of the game night approached, Sero making a beeline for the food with Kirishima and Kaminari close behind him. Iida was one of the first to arrive, of course, insisting on rearranging the food to a more tidy layout, which Ochako gladly allowed him to do. Ochako was giggling with Mina when they heard Iida reprimand the two boys for ‘taking too much food too early’ when their breaths suddenly hitched.

Izuku walked in. He greeted everyone, as he usually did.

Nothing was out of the ordinary.

Ochako held her breath, not sure if she would exhale or die from lack of oxygen when Katsuki walked in.

Katsuki walked in.

Okay. Okay. Ochako will, in fact, be dying. She didn’t want to intrude on this moment; she didn’t want to disrupt the calm before the storm, not even by breathing.
