Chapter Text

Matt's POV

Stars.

Of all different colours— blue, white, mauve, silver… Shining, sparkling dust.

So pretty.

White, soft, sparkling light enveloped me. I knew, somehow, that if I cared to look, my arm would be mended. But looking would mean moving.

And I didn't care to do that, to risk the loss of this blissful floating.

But why was my arm supposed to be broken?

Where was I?

Who was I, more to the point… A word crept into my mind. Friendship.

I gasped as all that I was filled me again.

Had… had I died?

Yes.

But I realised that it didn't matter. I 'd done what I had to, my friends were safe. As I floated, I realised that I was moving. Before me, a light— beautiful beyond words— became visible, and as I drew closer, I saw the lgiht was in fact a figure, a human figure.

Pure goodness radiated from her.

She stretched her huge, gracefully feathered wings as I came to a halt before her.

"Yamato…"

"Hello," I whispered, awed.

She was an archangel.

"You did a very great and noble thing, before."

I didn't say anything. I didn't agree that anything I had done could amount to the nobility of an archangel, but I didn't want to disagree with her.

"For that, you will be rewarded. After what you did, giving your life— and your soul— to something for the greater good, your spirit is… charged with a positive energy, shall we say.

From this, we can grant you one deed. A wish, if you will.

It can be absolutely anything, anything in the world.

But remember, you have only one wish."

Other archangels appeared around the first. My guardian angel, I realised.

I thought of my friends. My family.

I want to live.

Sorrow welled up within me.

"I can have anything?"

"Anything."

"I wish to…" I paused. "May I see my friends? How are they? Can I see them without using my wish?"

"But of course." My angel spread her hands, a golden ring forming between her hands. I could see my friends, the other Digidestined, through the ring. My eyes flow to a still figure on the ground.

TK.

"TK…" I whispered, my eyes stinging with tears. I drew a deep breath. He would be ok.

"Is he… TK, is he…"

The angels lowered their heads sadly. "Your brother no longer walks that world."

"Then I know what my wish is. You know what I wish, don't you?"

My angel nodded once.

"So be it, Yamato, Guardian of Friendship."

Notes:

And there you have it. A fic I wrote in its entirety in a notebok between 2001 and 2002, because I found typing too annoying.

And then I simply NEVER finished uploading the fic to ff.net. Tragic. Anyway, I don't think I did too badly, for being as young as I was.

Feel free to comment if you like, I'm sure your thoughts would make me smile. My main pseud where I write today is Ithika. The stories there are quite different (& adult), but it's been fun to revisit the beginning of my writing fic online.

Thanks for reading!
