Chapter 5: Spectrum/interlude

Chapter Text

I came to my senses again. My head didn't hurt anymore, but my hand was stuck in what felt like a vice grip of…

Bruce. Did he see me? Did I say something while I was… I immediately decided to tell him everything. I listed every single detail I could remember, strings of coordinates, lists, numbers, what looked like equations, consisting of letters and symbols. Sounds, so many different sounds and feelings.

It was a mess.

Then I went quiet, because he obviously looked sleep deprived and… wasn't listening to me at all. I'll just put down everything myself later.

Probably.

I didn't have the strength to even stand up, half leaning on the wall behind me, I let Bruce hold my hand. He seemed really out of it, and I decided to leave him alone for now. After some time he started dozing off on my shoulder and I tried my best to make him as comfortable as I could.

When I stood up on shaky legs the first thing I noticed was the near sterile state of the place. Did he clean? Hell… he probably stayed with me this whole time. I should probably say thank you…

how long has it been anyway?

Once I walked around a bit, a sudden wave of fatigue hit me. Figures, I've seen something fucked up just a moment ago… or was it longer than that?

As another wave of exhaustion washed over me I quickly fell onto the couch in the living room, which Bruce kindly got rid of the pile of clothes it was home to, because if i didn't i would've fainted.

Or at least it felt like it. I should definitely think all that over once I'm back in the loop…

I felt a strange sensation, like my body was being pulled apart cell by cell. weightless, my body itself was being diluted into the entire spectrum of light.

My every labored move left rainbow traces in its wake, everything started to bend and liquify. Maybe that's what falling asleep feels like… I kept forgetting what usual things felt like… or maybe I never knew.

I glanced at my hand. It seemed to turn redder, but it didn't feel like it was because of blood flow… i could see the red and blue fray out at the edges. Chromatic aberration.

The whole thing must've looked downright ethereal from the outside.

I saw colors i didn't suspect existed, reality feeling like it was amped up to eleven. (Desc here)

Before Ed disappeared fully he blacked out again, so he had no way of seeing that his body left an indent on the couch, or how quickly the warmth it left dissipated.

Or how the blanket he hastily threw over the headboard slipped on the floor with a soft rustle.

He didn't see the golden burn of the sunset dim and cool to a soothing twilight, or how the stars flickered into the sky one by one, like pulsing fireflies in the night sky.

The moon shined like a crescent-shaped swish, splattered by the careless painter.

Bruce stirred. A gentle, cool light pooled in a thin stripe on the floor through the barely-opened window.

“Ed??”

Silence.

“Ed!?”

A car honked outside. Then he heard a deafening crack. Must've been a car crash, but he didn't want to hear it. The one sound that mattered to him was the cold breeze of the night, the seemingly infinite vastness of the night sky, and of course, Ed's voice.

Or the lack of it.
