Chapter Text
When we pull up we have about half an hour before sundown. Mom tells me to hang out outside while she makes the cabin livable. The inside is covered in dust and cobwebs. So after I help her carry all the bags inside I head to the ocean.
The waves aren't anything like the news. There calm and only lightly lap at the beach. I pull of my sandals and step into the water. As I bend down to touch it a larger wave pushes up against my hand. I let loose a laugh I haven't heard from myself in years.
Gabe. The pressure from school. Mythology jumping of the pages. It was all so much. Too much at times. I nearly don't notice the warm feeling coursing through me, but since nights coming the warmth of my trident really stood out. I pull it out from under my shirt and gasp at its faint silver glow.
"Percy. It's time for dinner!" I tuck the trident back under my shirt and hope the glow is faint enough not to show through. As I run back to the cabin I swear I hear a faint singing. Whats crazier is I think I've heard this song before.
Me and my mom eat sandwiches and chips for dinner. Mom has more food but since we got here late this was the easiest thing to make. As we talk about our time apart and everything we want to do together. I ask the question I always ask when we come to this beach.
"What was my dad like?" My mom's eyes grew teary and she stares out the window wistfully.
"He was kind, and handsome." She looks at me. "You look like him. His hair, his eyes."
I lean forward. "What happened to him." I whispered.
"Lost at sea." She said. "One day he had to go, and he was lost at sea." I frowned.
"But, he knew me. He knew me as a baby right?" She shook her head.
"He had to go before that." I took another bite of my sandwich. I could've swore he saw me as a baby. The harder I thought the clearer a memory of a smiling man was. As I thought I realized where I'd heard that song from the ocean before. It was the man. He was singing it to me.
"It's getting late." Sally started to clean up. "It's time for bed." I helped her clean up ours plates and sweep up any crumbs before heading to bed. As I fell asleep that ocean song played in my head over and over.
I blinked my eyes open on the beach. But instead of the peaceful playful waves from earlier a raging storm had broken out. As I looked around I noticed a horse and an eagle attacking each other in the sand.
The horse reered it's front legs up as the eagle swooped down.
"Stop! Stop hurting each other!" I tried to get closer but the rain was slowing me down. Soon the ground started shaking and a booming laugh echoed from the earth. As I tried to regain my footing I heard a bark. To my left on top of a hill was a large black dog.
"Woof!" It barked at me. I didn't understand what it wanted. Soon the ground opened up and I started to fall. I heard the eagle caw and the the combined thumping of the horse and dog getting closer to me. But as soon as I saw a couple of strands of the horses mane the earth closed around me.
When I jolted out of the bed I heard a pounding on the door. The rain was beating down on the roof and thunder rolled across the sky.
"Percy!" I heard my mom yell. I ran into the living room right as she opened the door. There drenched in water was my best friend Grover. Who was apperantly half goat.
