Chapter 3: Humble Abode

Chapter Text

It was a quiet, windy evening when they finally arrived at the humble farm Amber grew up in. Traveling days up the rocky, icy mountains, far from Brodia’s capital city, all just to end up in a tiny village with a population of 456 people, 1036 alpacas.

“We’re here!” Amber chirps as he takes the lead by getting off of his horse, knocking on the door to his childhood home. The humble structure was built by using cheap stone and wood evidently found in the nearby mountain ranges, small enough to only fit maybe two bedrooms at most, but Diamant knew Amber had an extended family that totaled at least twenty people. As soon as Amber knocks on the door, Diamant follows him there, overhearing a few hushed voices on the other side of the door.

“He hasn’t been home since the war started, we have to make sure we give him the best welcome!” the voice of a middle aged woman tries to whisper, but unfortunately for her, loud enough to make the two men on the other side of the door  overhear her, “Did you make sure to take the roasted yams off of the fire?”

“Yes. Wait, did I? Let me check,” a younger voice, likely a sibling or cousin says as they run off to double check their work. A third voice, a folksy middle aged man, sighs, and if Diamant was a betting man, he would guess it was Amber’s father.

“Calm down, it isn’t his birthday!” the voice retorts, getting up from wherever he was sitting before,  “Just act natural! Let me just open the door and-”

As soon as the door opens, the man only seemed to look at his son once before quickly noticing the more regal man by his side. Despite wearing more simple clothes: no armor, no gold or jewels, Diamant immediately stuck out, to the point where he could see some of Amber’s siblings crowding against the window, in awe of seeing their country’s king stop by a small town like theirs.

For about a minute, both men seemed to stare at each other, unblinking, trying to figure out what the right thing to say would be. Only when Amber, looking back and forth between his father and partner, asks, “Hey, where’s mom?” to break the ice, do both men stop their impromptu starting contest and walk inside the family’s humble abode, past several family members instinctively saluting at their king despite their being no formal need to.

It was strange as it was exciting, especially with the promise of being able to help care for creatures that are apparently so much like Diamant himself.

“Hey Diamant!” Amber calls out from the back half of the house, halfway out the door to the side that exits to their alpaca farm, “Want me to give you a quick introduction to them? We’ve got twenty three of them for you to memorize the names of. Like Stefan, Sedgar, Samuel…”

Evidently, it would seem Diamant’s only kingly duties ended up being to meet his potential future progeny.

A very Merry belated Christmas and Happy Holidays to @asterisque on Bluesky and Tumblr! I hope you enjoy my little stocking stuffers of fics + drawing, as I had a lot of ideas but not a lot of time to elaborate on all of them. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did making it!
