Chapter Text
June 30th, 1990
10:29 AM,
The air in the apartment was light, the air conditioner was on full blast, and the sun shone brightly through the thin curtains. Both Nancy and Jonathan had a day off from work, which was rare since they worked for the same publisher. For the first time in months, they had a full day to spend together. No plans, no errands, just sleeping in and enjoying each other's company. They spent the night prior at Enzo’s, going full out, even getting dessert. They got home late, but between the wine and the promise of a relaxing day tomorrow, they couldn't care less.
11:47 AM
Jonathan and Nancy were still in bed. Nancy lay on top of Jonathan while he subconsciously braided her hair. He’d been up for about 15 minutes at this point, but stayed as still as possible, not wanting to wake her up. But he had been planning on making her breakfast this morning, and he’ll be damned if she has to wait for breakfast, or even worse, cook for herself. Jonathan’s always enjoyed cooking, and he enjoyed it more when he was cooking for those he loved and cared about. Nancy was also just not a very good cook. Don't get him wrong, she’s good at a lot of things! Like sewing, writing, reporting, shooting, etc. But he has watched her microwave boiled eggs, so he tends to handle most of the cooking in the house.
Very, very slowly, Jonathan sat up, carefully lifting Nancy’s head from his chest so as not to disturb her. Her eyes twitched slightly, causing Jonathan to freeze in place. Luckily, she relaxed again. He slipped on his house shoes, careful not to make so much as a creak in the floorboards. As soon as he was out of their shared bedroom, he did his best to take a quick shower, brush his teeth, wash his face, and comb his hair. His hair was getting long enough to be put in a small (and I mean very small) ponytail. He’d been wanting to cut it shorter, but he knows Nancy likes to play with his hair and make a bunch of small ponytails throughout his head and make him walk around the department like that, so the haircut could wait, for her sake.
12:00 PM
He came out of the bathroom mostly dry, with the exception of his hair, which was dripping onto his dark green shirt. It's noon now, which means Nancy would most likely be waking up soon. She never liked sleeping in too late. It made her feel like she was wasting her time. Jonathan immediately got to work, placing two bagels into the toaster. He has a plan for a meal that he knows Nancy will enjoy. He planned on making her a yoghurt bowl, using Greek yoghurt, granola, almonds, blueberries, strawberries, and a drizzle of honey. And as a side, an easy bagel with cream cheese. It didn't take much time to complete the food, but he wanted the bowl to look nice, so he kept meticulously rearranging the fruits to form a heart.
12:15
Once the table was set, Jonathan glanced at the clock. It's a quarter past 12, and Nancy is still asleep. He knows she would be more upset if she woke up later than if he woke her up right now, so he took that chance. He set a fresh pot of coffee to brew and walked lightly into their room. Gently opening the door, he peered in to see the covers on the floor, and Nancy seemingly barely hanging on to the bed. But even with her messy hair, quiet snoring, and the old shirt she stole from Jonathan to use as a sleep shirt, she still looked artistic. For years, Jonathan searched high and low for the perfect scenery to photograph. Every mountain, sunset, and starry night, nothing compared to the heavenly woman he woke up to every day.
“Nancy.”
“...Nancyyyy…”
“Nancy!”
Jonathan began to shake her shoulders, but to no avail. Seeing that there was no way she was going to get up at this point, Jonathan did the next best thing. He scooped her up bridal style and marched them both to the living room. There, he sat Nancy on the couch, quickly walking to the kitchen and back to the living room with their yoghurt bowls and bagels in hand.
He set Nancy's bowl on the coffee table, knowing it might take her a bit to wake up. He decided that they can lie around on the couch together, and while she sleeps, he can watch a movie. They had a fat stack of VHS tapes on the coffee table, so Jonathan just started sifting through those. He ultimately decided on Back to the Future, because of course he did. He hurried back to his spot on the couch, lowering himself very slowly, still doing his best to keep Nancy as still and unbothered as humanly possible. Once he was fully settled, he pulled Nancy back onto his lap, so that her head was lying on his thigh, and the rest of her body was sprawled on the couch. As the movie started, the air in the room became dainty and soft. The clouds began to cover the harsh, bright June sun, and if Jonathan knew anything, he knew that this was exactly where he wanted to be.
