Chapter 9: Why Don’t You and I Get together and fly To the moon and straight on to heaven
So I'll say, "Why don't you and I
Get together and fly
To the moon and straight on to heaven?"
'Cause without you, they're never gonna let me in
It was Saturday, their day off. A day where they could wake up and make love and have coffee and make love and eat and make love to their hearts content without having to go to work.
They were at Harry's apartment this weekend and Dan woke up spooning Harry, burrowed in the covers, hiding from the bitter January cold, especially with the threat of a bad storm coming in. Harry wasn't kidding when he told Quon Le Dan hated the cold. It was the only thing Dan did not like about New York. And Harry’s apartment was warmer than his.
Well, that might have something to do with the man who lived there…
But today, he woke up to nosing Harry’s hair as the man slept on. Dan smiled and kissed the back of his head, burrowing in his warmth as he closed his eyes to go back to sleep.
He was just about to when the phone rang.
They both groaned and Harry groped around the nightstand for it. Dan tried to cling to him tighter to allow him to have the answering machine pick it up but Harry was a master of getting out of a pin and he finally grabbed the phone to answer it.
“Ello,” he muttered, still half asleep.
“Is this Harold Stone?” someone asked.
“Yes,” Harry yawned.
“We have you down as an emergency contact for a Selma Hacker? She had a procedure that required general anesthesia and she requested we call you for you to pick her up,” the person said.
“Selma?” Harry asked, sitting up.
“What?” Dan asked, sitting up as well.
“She put me on as an emergency contact,” Harry whispered as he took the address down.
“There's another person here…a Mr. Dan Fielding?”
Harry did a double take. “Uh…yes…I can get him to come down with me,” he said, looking at Dan.
Dan raised his eyebrows at Harry as he hung up a minute later.
“What's going on?” He asked, getting up and out of bed.
“Selma had some kind of procedure and put us down as her emergency contacts,” Harry explained.
“Us?” Dan asked, heading to the kitchen.
“I guess after last time, she figured it would be better to have someone and you would be with me,” Harry shrugged, as he walked towards the bathroom. “Can you put the coffee on so we can grab it to go?”
Dan nodded, grabbing Harry's waist to get a good morning kiss. Harry melted for a second, cupping his face and tracing over the stubble on his cheeks. Dan grinned into his mouth and pulled back.
“If it wasn't Selma,” he said.
“I'd tie you up and not let you out of bed today,” Harry nodded, grinning.
Dan moaned and kissed him, holding him tight. Harry smiled into the kiss and pulled back, a hand on his chest.
“Easy tiger, later. I promise,” he promised.
“I'm holding you to that, Stone,” Dan said, walking out to the kitchen and Harry went into the bathroom. He flicked the coffee machine, grabbing his dopp kit from his overnight bag.
“Harry,” he called, an idea forming. Harry hummed around his toothbrush, poking his head out of the bathroom. Dan went towards the bathroom. “Would you mind if I leave some more stuff here? Extra suits, clothes, toothbrush? Like you have at my place ”
Harry smiled and spit out the toothpaste, pulling him to the closet, opening it to reveal half of it ready for someone to take up. He hugged Dan, kissing his neck. Dan smiled and burrowed into him.
“I want you here as much as possible, Dan,” Harry whispered. “I meant when I said we'll find a way to actually have a home together but for now, this will have to do,” he said.
Dan felt slightly choked up and kissed Harry with as much love as he felt for him in that moment. He had no words but he knew his actions spoke louder as he held the love of his life tight.
“You really didn't have to come for me, guys,” Selma said as they walked her into her apartment.
“Selma, given the fact that we saw you face plant multiple times last time, we did,” Dan said, putting her things on the chair. “And given it looks like Mother Nature turned on the “meat locker” setting even now, we needed to come.”
Harry chuckled as Selma gave Dan a look as the judge helped her to her couch. Unlike that last time, she seemed to be more with it but still her movements were jerky to say the least.
“It was just a check up,” Selma said.
Harry raised his eyebrows. “Selma, I hate doctors as much as the next person but what kind of check up requires the use of general anesthesia?” He asked, sitting next to her.
“It was just some little test thing they wanted to run,” Selma said, patting his knee. Seeing the fear in his eyes, she squeezed his hand. “I’m fine, Harry. I put you guys down because I didn’t want to deal with Bull lumbering about. I figured you guys would drive me home, set me up with whatever I need and that would be it,” she told him.
Harry looked at her then Dan, who sat in the armchair.
“Selma,” Dan sighed.
“Don't. Because then Harry'll start and then you and I will be at it all night. And as much as I love you guys, I don't want to be with you all night,” Selma said.
Harry took a breath. “It's bad, huh,” he asked, his voice small.
Selma threw her arms around him. “It's nothing that I won't fight. And you know I will,” she told him.
Harry let himself hug her tightly. “Anything you need, you call us,” he said.
Selma nodded, hugging him back. “And please, don’t tell the others,” she asked.
“Unless it’s going to affect them,” Dan said. Selma gave him a look and he gave one back. “I’m serious. You think that Bull would be happy if you just up and died without a chance to say goodbye?”
Selma kept looking at him, half expecting the old Dan to come back and be the bastard he was before telling Harry he loved him. She sighed, knowing his logic was sound.
“I know. But let me tell him,” she said. She squeezed Harry’s hand again. “In my own time,” she said.
“Fine,” Harry nodded. He looked at Dan and his partner nodded as well.
They knew this was not over by a long shot.
They stayed for a little while, settling Selma in for the night, discussing exactly what the doctors told her. It wasn't really good but it wasn't dire yet. A medium they could live with.
When they got home, Dan knew Harry was in no frame of mind for sex.
Regardless of the way Harry basically jumped him as soon as the apartment door was closed.
“Harry, Harry.” Dan didn't want to push him off but he nearly had to. He stepped back as Harry blinked. “Come on, we need to talk,” he said,
Harry pouted and sighed but sat down on the couch. Dan sat next to him, their knees touching. He took Harry's hand and kissed it as Harry took off his hat with his other hand, tossing it aside.
“Okay, what's going on?” Dan asked.
Harry sighed again and put his head back. “Everyone leaves,” he whispered. He rubbed his eyes and looked at Dan. “My mom…then my dad died like I told you, before I could explain the joyride…and now Selma,” he went on. “And who knows, one day, you could just decide that you would rather be with someone else and leave too. And that would ruin me, Danny.”
Dan wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close. “Harry, she's not going anywhere. Not right this second. And I'm not leaving. I'm never leaving, only after you. I'm here for life, babe,” he told him, kissing his temple.
“I just want to keep the family I have now. I am tired of losing people,” Harry whispered, burrowing into his chest.
“I can't go back and take away the hurt you experienced in your past but I can promise you, nothing in this world can take me away from you. And if you are serious about having a family, then I will do everything in my power to make that come true for you,” Dan said, holding Harry close.
Dan smiled softly as he shifted them to lay down on the couch, running a hand through Harry's hair. “Did I ever tell you about one time Donna came up just after you were appointed?”
Harry shook his head, nestled in his arms. Dan smiled and held him a little tighter. “She surprised me, sneaking in halfway through the session. She just watched and when I realized she was there, I took her to dinner and we caught up and she told me that she never saw me have as much fun as I did that night in court. I swear I thought she was having me on because it was one of those nights where everything went off the rails and nothing anyone did was able to get it back on track. But she told me that I actually looked relaxed and happy. It didn't take her long to see why when I kept bringing up how you were. She was the first person I told about my feelings. And I told her that I was thinking of transferring because of them,” he told him.
Harry looked at him, startled, but Dan kissed his nose. “She talked me out of it, saying that if we worked together we could be a great team. And if we were together, we could be even better. So imagine when I called her after our parents came up and she found out we were together,” he went on. Harry chuckled as Dan grimaced. “Nearly blew my eardrum out,” he chuckled.
“I bet,” Harry laughed. He snuggled into Dan’s embrace. “I am glad you didn’t transfer out,” he said.
“I’m not going anywhere. Not without you,” Dan vowed, kissing him. “As long as you want us to be together.”
Harry smiled and closed his eyes. “I want us always, Dan,” he whispered. “I want to be with you for the rest of my life. I want to build walls around us to keep whatever we're building together q1safe and protected.”
“And it will be. We'll both protect what's ours,” Dan vowed.
Harry nodded, dozing off. Dan smiled and fell into a light sleep with him.
When Harry woke up, the storm outside had gotten so bad, the power went out. He got up and off Dan, who was still asleep, rummaging around to find a bunch of candles and flashlights he kept. As quickly and quietly as possible, he set them up around the living room. He then kissed Dan's forehead and went to find something to make for dinner.
When Dan woke up, he found the living room and the apartment cast in a soft glow from the candles around the apartment and a tantalizing smell of something Italian.
“Harry,” he called, walking into the kitchen.
“Hey, Mrs. Torres came over and gave me one of her baked zitis that she had in her oven before the power went out and I found some old catering burners to keep it warm,” Harry explained as he cut the casserole up.
“When did the power go out,” Dan asked, grabbing plates and glasses. He opened a bottle of wine as Harry served up the pasta.
“By my estimation, about an hour ago,” Harry replied. “You were out,” he said.
“So were you,” Dan said, pouring them a glass each. He looked at Harry, who avoided his gaze. “Harry,” he said, taking his hand. The blonde looked at him, still a little lost. “I'm not going away. Trust me on that.”
Harry blinked back tears and nodded. “Okay,” he whispered.
Dan smiled, kissing his hand. They ate in a comfortable silence, a couple of thoughts here and there shared but mostly, they were quiet and content.
“You know, I heard from Lana,” Harry said, later as they sat in the living room again. He was on one end of the couch, Dan on the other bracketed by each other's legs.
“How's she doing?” Dan asked, massaging Harry's calf muscle.
“She's good, married now. Living in Boston,” Harry replied, smiling. “She said she'll come by to visit soon.”
“It would be nice to see her again. See how far her head spins when she figures out about us,” Dan chuckled.
Harry laughed, nudging him. “She would be happy,” he said.
“Uh huh. She was the second biggest prude around,” Dan said, smirking. “Christine being the first,” he added. He laughed as Harry took a swipe at him. He pulled the blonde onto his lap, smiling. He caressed his sides as Harry giggled.
“God, how did I get so lucky,” Dan asked, smiling. “Even in my wildest dreams, I never would have thought you would even blink at me,” he said.
Harry smiled and wrapped his arms around his neck. “I'm the one who should be thanking all the stars that you actually want me,” he said. “The geeky, magic loving judge.”
“Harry, you're selling yourself short here. You're stunning, first off. But you're also charming, funny, kind, brilliant. You're the whole package. You're someone people are drawn to because you're like this beacon of light and hope. Even in the face of all you lost, you still have a smile on and see the good in people like me,” Dan told him, kissing him.
“People like you? Now who's selling himself short?” Harry asked, running a hand through Dan's hair. “You're smart, you're handsome, beautiful even. You have a sense of humor that is as wicked as mine. You have a heart, even though you try to hide it. You are direct and honest and you have a protective streak that is a mile wide. And, let me tell you, that's hot.”
“Harry, as much as I know you love me, you have to realize that I'm not the best of people. I'm snide, a suck up, a cheapskate. I'm a Republican, so there's the sleeping with the enemy thing. I wasn't exactly a boy scout before we got together and I've had some spectacular blunders since as well, but for some reason you love me, which is a miracle. One I want to spend the rest of my life trying to be worthy of,” Dan whispered.
Harry smiled and caressed Dan's face. “I will keep reminding you that you have a soul and a heart every single day if I have to for the rest of our lives, Dan,” he said. “I promise to love you, cherish you, and fight for you. You are the love of my life and I want you, always. You're the best man because you're the one I want. Always.”
Dan smiled. “And I promise to always be here for you. I'll never walk away from the life we're building here. We're not perfect and I won't pretend we're not going to fight but I do love you and I will always, always fight for us,” he replied.
Harry smiled and kissed him. Dan gripped his waist, holding him as close as possible. Their hands soon started roaming, Dan's slipping under Harry's sweater and undershirt. Harry moaned as Dan massaged his back as they kissed. Dan smiled and pulled him impossibly closer, both of them moaning as their burgeoning erections brushed together.
“I love everything about you, Harry. And it is going to take an act of God to make me stop,” Dan whispered.
Harry smiled and ran his hand through Dan's hair. “I love you too, Dan. And I'm never going to stop. Now, please take me inside and make love to me,” he said, nuzzling their noses together.
Dan smiled, wrapping his arms around Harry and then standing, throwing him over his shoulder. “Your wish is my command,” he said.
Harry's laughter echoed through the apartment and vibrated through Dan's bones as he went towards the bedroom.
