Chapter Text
“What’s to-day?”
“EH?”
“What’s to-day, my fine fellow!”
“Today! Why, Christmas Day!”
“It’s Christmas Day! I haven’t missed it. The spirits, have done it all in one night…” - Click
Damien grabbed the remote, cutting off the movie that had long since been abandoned, and looked down. Angel had curled up next to him, fast asleep for God knew how long. He really should wake them, sleeping on the couch wasn’t good for either of their backs. But… he didn’t want to. Didn’t want them so far. Even if the bed was just in the next room, it wasn’t close enough. And wasn’t that just selfish.
Reaching down, he retrieved the wayward throw blanket that had fallen to the floor, draping it over them both. They stirred a little, only to shuffle in closer, arms tightening around his back as they nestled into his chest. His heart constricted, mind running rampant wrestling over wants and wishes. His biggest was for their happiness. The lines in the sand painstakingly obvious as it separated the tides from the shore. He didn’t want to disturb those calm waters. Didn’t want to cause ripples that led to torrents that could upend everything they’ve built and shared between them. If he cast himself into the shallows, would a lifeline be there to greet him? Or would he slowly sink into the deep?
His hand stroked up and down their arm, their warmth tickling his fingertips. A small sigh fell against his neck, and he knew it was too much of a gamble to take.
Watching them, he knew a smile had found its way onto his lips.
I’d rather have you like this than lose you forever.
On impulse, his head bent low, lips brushing gently against their forehead.
Chase your dreams and I’ll do the same. Then we’ll meet in the middle. Just don’t forget about me, ok?
The howling winds drew his attention to the window, the billowing snow whiting out the outside, trapping them within this space.
And he silently wished for the storm to never end.
