Chapter Text

How could it have gone so wrong so fast..

Chance hadn't even thought about it when deciding to make a plan- I mean spade seemed pretty lonely that morning before he dropped him off at their parents..

Chance couldn't leave the poor thing alone whilst he was out gambling afterall! What type of person would they be if they left spade alone like that??

But it seemed that choice came to bite them in the butt now- they had drank a bit with a friend at the casino- so they couldn't drive even if they wanted. Getting in the back of a rundown taxi that has probably seen better days, they laid back against the seats of the car- a mysterioys scent permeating throughout the vehicle.

They mumbled the address and tried to just relax- head still fuzzy, he has bought a water bottle earlier- to sober up before going to their parents.. I mean- they wouldn't dream of handing spade over when Chance seemed under the influence.

Popping a piece of minty gum- freshening up and trying to use some sort of perfume to mask the scent of liquor and now whatever was in the car.

Their parents would never let him take spade back if he smelled of alcohol..

Itrapped also coaxed them into getting one too many drinks.. but he couldn't say no to his friend could he?

The taxi pulled to a stop infront of the imposing and towering gates of the mansion ahead.

They decided to regret their choices later as he got out- heading towards the lavish gates that stood infront of the house of his childhood. Their parents house...

Opening the extravagant side door as the taxi driver sped off- they stepped inside..

The seemingly endless treck stretched on- gardens that seemed to be fit for royalty stretched around as far as the eye could see- the house being way far back.

Casually strutting through the carefully made path lined with roses and statues of all sizes- Chance grabbed their lucky coin and flipped it once, twice, three times-

All tails. This couldn't be a good sign on how this confrontation will go.

Sometimes they truly believed his parents loved spade almost as much as Chance did.

As they walked- he glanced around at the pieces of art his parents kept. Always art enthusiasts that pair- statues laid around the garden in varying portrayals of emotion.

The artists that had to slave away at these truly had their work cut out for them eh?..

Each statue seemed to be more lifelike than the next- almost scary with their accurate depictions of the human body..

Of course they were carefully taken care of by a groups of people-

But still.. it seemed almost cruel for these masterpieces to be locked away from the viewing pleasure of others.

All that work- only for the same family to gaze upon those statues.

Thinking about those statues..

Chance could remember vividly that one time him and Lance decided it would be funny to paint on one of the statues.

He thought it looked quite nice- but his parents not quite.

Both Chance and Lance were punished by being made to take art classes for 1 whole year! His parents wanted them to understand the true meaning of art.. but it was honestly so hard to put one meaning onto something so subjective.

Alas- it got both of them to understand the work that actually went behind those statues.. they both apologised to the artist who made it personally later on.

Their parents were always art fanstics- always loved the little details.

As chance came back from his little walk through memory lane- he realised they were already infront of the stairs! Already nearly there.. they must have truly been lost in thought for all this to pass by.

They looked besides the grand marble staircase- only to see a certain statue. Colours still vibrantly visible.. they kept it even after all this time- even put it so close to the door.. the sentiment that grew in their chest was fond- but also a hint of shock sprinkled in.

They didn't often pay too much attention to the outside of the house.. always hurrying up the mountain of stairs ahead-

Hey who needed gym when you had this workout to go through whenever you got home right??

Anyway- they started climbing the stairs.. with the eagerness of someone that had to eat something bad. For the first time in a while taking the time to admire the intricate work made with the marble.

The mansion was anything but minimalistic- full of eccentrities that made it their home-

The clutter felt almost comforting. Little art addicts.

As chance made their way through the overwhelming expanse of colour and life the place had- they eventually got to the room he knew his parents were in.

The play room.

They had originally made it for a child- a grandchild- but since neither him or Lance seemed very inclined to it they made it spades room.

Lance was too busy with his business anyway- well he seemed happy so who were they to judge?

As anticipated- the small hooligan was thoroughly enjoying himself- spread out in all his rabbit glory, surrounded by lush toys and expensive carpets-

This rabbit probably lived better than kings and Queens ever had.

They even had someone come in and paint spade for gods sake!

The rabbits portrait was hung on the wall behind him- spade besides a deck of cards- a beautifully decorated fedora resting atop his bunny cranium and besides him one of his favourite toys and a couple of roses.

But the smaller being was a deceptive little thing- an intellect in those glossy eyes as they gazed back at him.

"Chance! Whatever may bring you here without notice- oh whatever, come here!"

His mother approached- grinning from ear to ear with joy at seeing her son come home.

"Hi ma..soo- i may or may not need spade bac-" the poor gambler didn't even get to finish before getting smothered in a hug by the older woman.

"Dont be silly- he just got here!" She responded warmly- but a hint of stubbornness seemed to slip through her tone.

This would get them nowhere.

"Wheres dad?" Distract her- snatch the bunny and apologise later-

As Chance gazed at their watch he realised 1 hour had already passed- damn it. He'd have to work quick.

"Oh wait- let me just get him-" she hurried off- calling out- "we've got company sweetheart!"

Chance immediately got to work- ready to snatch spade when-

He turned his head away??

"Oh- come on! What do you mean- spade! This is important-"

His dad's gruff voice responded: "Angela- one of our statues has a scratch!"

The gasp and hurrying footsteps echoed through the house, making the timer click slowly in chances brain-

"Please- please spade I'll get you a private cheff to make you bunny safe pizza! Sushi?? You want sushi?? Um- I can get you those cookies you liked??"

The rabbit didn't bat an eye at those generous offers from his owner-

That's it.. they had to pull out the big guns.

"Your little friend is waiting for you.. gubby was their name?"

That seemed to have gotten the bastards attention. Ears flopping as his head turned to gaze at his owner with a renewed interest.

"That's right- come to dad-" they didn't have time to say the rest of his sentence as the door behind him exploded in the excited flurry that were his parents.

"It's fine- we're ok- your father was just imagining it- the statue is fine"

"Chance!"

"Dad!"

Sneaking was no longer an option. His father was as sharp as a hound- he'd realised in no time if spade went missing.

"..I see that's new. Who painted it?" Chance nodded towards the towering painting of his beloved companion.

"Oh- a dear aquantance! Its truly a masterpiece isnt it?" His father's pride in the painting seemed to be endless- they acted like spade was also their child sometimes.

Don't get chance wrong- his parents had loads of photoes and paintings of both him and their twin too.

"Soo- dad. Do you remember that vintage I have in my collection?" Bribery it is then-

"Yes- it was quite the sight wasn't it?" He responded with a chuckle. Just like his father, Chance was- they both enjoyed the finer things in life.

"It's yours- all you have to do is hand over Spade-"

"You cannot accept this dea-" His mother started- but she soon ate her words as her husband responded swiftly.

"Of course you can have spade- he's your rabbit ya know?.. but- for this. I want to add on one more thing.." the older man grumbled something to himself before looking back at chance with the warmth of a father who truly held nothing but love- even if he didnt always show it.

"What is it da?" Chance spoke up- hopeful it wouldn't be another vintage from their collection..

"We're growing old son.. make us one last painting. Choose a special subject. I expect great things. You have a brian. Use it for this one" with that the man grabbed Spade from his throne like bed and handed him over to Chance.

"..o-oh-" it was an unexpected challenge.. but not one they'd pass up on. "Of course.. it will be so spectacular youll never see a painting to outdo it!" Chance quickly but gently grabbed a hold of the bunny.

Spade squirmed slightly, reluctant to be taken out of the constant pampering his owners parents subjected him to.

"Come on Spade- you'll get to see your friend again!" Chances cheer seemed to attract the attention of his parents.

"Wait.. friend?"

Oh- opps.

"Umm- yeah! Spade found a bunny friend. Gubby- his name was.. i made plans to go out and completely forgot- ill come drop off the vintage soon byee-"

And so our famed gambler sprinted out of his parents house.. just 15 minutes until the fated meeting between himself and their not so mysterious companion.

Running down the steps- nearly stumbling over his own shoelaces just like when they were 10.

Who named their child mafioso anyway?

Pulling out his phone he reluctantly swiped to the contact of his soon to be meet.

He saved his contact as "grumpy hat gui."

Seems to fit him.

Taking a deep breath, their thumb swiped quickly across the screen- tapping the call button.

The voice on the other side came in- annoyed, reluctant, and possibly already angry.

"What?? Let me guess- ya cant make it on time?"

"Eheh.."

"..you're impossible. How long must I wait? Gubby is getting impatient ya know? Get over here Vance-"

"..its Chance.. and you say I'm the disrespectful one- whatever I'll be there in around half an hour. Sorry" just as he was about to end the call from the other side there could be heard-

"Is sorry the only thing you have to say for-"

And the line went dead.

Opps?

As chance called a taxi to get him outta here and towards this builder brothers pizzeria- the sky seemed to be getting dark. No stars could be seen from here however- far too cloudy.

Did it feel claustrophobic without the space of eternity or did the sky's overwhelming concept of infinity overwhelm the mind it had to be covered up?..

The sky was awfully fascinating in such times. The gemstones we called stars hidden away by the murky puffs of condensated water.

Inspiration always hit at the most random of times.
