Runnin' back to you

Chapter 3: the wedding

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It was the next morning, and everyone was at the venue for Joyce and Hopper's wedding. The girls had spent the night together watching movies and playing some board games - just a relaxed night, just like Joyce wanted - and the boys also ended up spending the night, almost all of them together at Byers' house.

The wedding had already taken place and after a very emotional ceremony, everyone was having fun dancing, drinking, eating and talking to each other. At that moment, Jonathan was dancing with his mother and Nancy was with her little sister, Holly, both of them exchanging glances every few seconds with no one noticing. However, a very important conversation was taking place at that exact moment.

"Hey! Robin!"

Robin turned her back with a smile on her face upon hearing her name in that familiar voice.

"Steve! I didn't really see you today; what's up?"

"Look, I think we both lost our bet" he suddenly blurted.

"What? What bet?"

"Come on, Robin" he started at her. "How many bets did we make? The Nancy and Jonathan bet? I think we both lost it."

"What?" Robin started to get a little nervous. He couldn't have figured it out, right? And she also promised Nancy and Jonathan to keep it a secret. "Why would you think that?"

"I think Jonathan has a new girlfriend" he said in a low voice, as if he were afraid someone could hear him, even though they were far away from the others.

"What?" Robin was aware that she had repeated that word three times now, but she was shocked by this conversation.

"Yeah, I think he has a new girlfriend and I don't think it's Nancy because we would've known, so we were both wrong by saying they would get back together."

"And why do you think he has a new girlfriend?" Robin was pretending the best she could. What had Steve seen?

"Okay, you know how I went to New York last week and visited Jonathan at his place?"

"Yes, I talked to you both when you called me."

"On that day, when I went to his bathroom, I noticed that there were two toothbrushes."

"So?" Robin didn't know where he was going with this.

"Why would he need two toothbrushes?"

"I don't know, maybe for nosy guests like you?"

"But they were both used."

"Steve, how closely did you observe his bathroom? This is weird."

"No, it's not. I'm just attentive" he defended himself.

"If you say so."

"But they weren't only toothbrushes, okay? When I started to pay more attention, there were two of practically everything. Two toothbrushes, two towels hanging, two sponges, and even I saw a bag of makeup! I think he is living with his new girlfriend in New York."

"Wait, they're living together??" Robin was so shocked by that information that she wasn't aware of what she had said out loud.

"They?"

"Hm?" Shit. She had already broken her promise; great job, Robin.

"You just said THEY'RE living together?" Steve accused Robin with his finger. "You know something."

"Me? I don't know what you're talking about, Steve; I know the same as you, okay? I just said 'they' referring to Jonathan and his new girlfriend or whatever she is. I didn't think he would move in with someone this early." Jonathan and Nancy could've told her that they had moved in together when they told her about their relationship, but it seemed that they really liked keeping secrets.

"No, Robin, you're not going to act like your comment was nothing. You said 'they' like you know of whom you are talking about. So you know about Jonathan's new girlfriend."

"Yes, maybe I know something" there was no point in denying now; Steve wasn't stupid. But she was not telling anything about this new girlfriend being an old girlfriend in a more specific way.

"And why do you know about this and I don't?" He looked a little bit hurt.

"Look, Steve, I really can't tell you anything, I promise..."

"Okay, so let's ask the person in question" he was looking at someone behind Robin. Robin turned around to find Jonathan walking toward them with a smile on his face, only if he knew what was coming his way.

"Hey, guys, what are you doing?" Jonathan started to look at Robin and Steve.

"Who is your new girlfriend and why does Robin know about it and not me?" Steve didn't lose a second.

"What?" Jonathan was astonished.

"That's exactly what I said, about three times" commented Robin in a low voice.

"What are you talking about, Steve?" Jonathan was trying to act calm, but if you looked at his hands, you could see his nerves.

"Look, man, when I was at your house last week, I noticed that you had two of practically everything, so I assumed you were living with someone and that someone is a girl. And when I told Robin that, she was shocked and asked me if they're living together. So I guess my prediction is correct, and for some reason I don't know, Robin knows about this and I don't."

"Hello, guys, what is happening?" A new voice entered the conversation.

"Oh, this is just perfect" murmured Robin, who was a bit amused by this situation.

"Nancy" Steve didn't expect to see her there " we were just, umm ... I don't know if you want to hear this conversation?" Steve was looking at Jonathan while asking this.

"She has to hear this" was Jonathan's response.

"Okay, your decision. So, Nancy, I just discovered that Jonathan has a new girlfriend and they're living together and Robin knows."

"This is starting to feel like Groundhog Day " Robin had already heard that phrase like four times.

"What?" Nancy's eyes were perplexed.

"Like I said, Groundhog Day."

"Are you going to say anything?" Steve looked at Jonathan.

"Yes, I have a new girlfriend. Well, technically it's not a new girlfriend. Kind of a new old girlfriend? And she is the best thing that has happened to me; always has been." He turned to look Nancy in the eyes and remained that way for the rest of the discourse. "Every time I look at her, I have to catch my breath because she is the most beautiful woman to ever exist and I can't believe that I am with her. Also, every time I look at her, it's like everything else gets blurry and I can only look at her, like if I were a sunflower and she were the sun. In a way, she really is the sun, to be fair, the sun of my life, because now that I'm with her again, everything seems brighter and happier. She, as well, is the smartest person that I have ever known and if anything goes bad, I know she would have the answer. I could spend hours talking about all the beautiful things she is and praising her, but in conclusion, I love her and I would hate to lose her again. I can't imagine a life without her."

Jonathan finished his discourse breathless and Nancy had to wipe away the tears that came from her eyes upon hearing all of that. She went to where he was and put her hands on his cheeks.

"You are also the best thing that has ever happened to me. And don't ever say again that you can't believe that I'm with you because you are also beautiful, smart, kind, funny and a lot more things. I am with you because I love all of you and I think you are the most incredible person to ever exist."

They pressed their lips together, kissing each other in a soft, deep way, as if the world was ending and this was their last kiss.

"Oh" was the only thing Steve could say after witnessing all of that. "So, Nancy is the new girlfriend?"

"Yes" answered Robin. "And by the way, you owe me 20 dollars."

"Yeah, yeah, but I still have a few questions."

Nancy and Jonathan finally pulled away from each other; Nancy wrapped her arms around Jonathan's hip and rested her face on his shoulder. In that position, they both looked at Steve and Robin.

"Why did Robin know about this and I didn't?" was the first question Steve asked.

"She caught us yesterday kissing in front of my house, so we had to tell her."

"Yes, but what you didn't tell me was that you were living together" Robin replied.

"It's because technically we are not living together" explained Jonathan. "Nancy spends practically all day at my place; that is why we have two of everything, like Detective Steve said."

"Hey, man."

"Sorry" he laughed. "Like I was saying, she stays almost every day with me, but we haven't had a conversation about moving in together yet."

"I guess this little discourse was conversation enough" pointed out Robin.

"I guess" Jonathan smiled and looked at Nancy, who was already looking at him from his shoulder. "What do you say?"

"I would love to move in with you" she stood on tiptoes and gave him a little kiss.

"Okay that's cute" admitted Steve. "But here goes my second question: why didn't we know about your relationship before, and why does it seem like no one knew about it?"

"Because nobody knows" explained Nancy. "We wanted to keep it a secret until after the wedding. We wanted this to be Joyce's day and not have people asking about us."

"Just like I am doing now" realized Steve.

"Pretty much."

"I would get you out of this, but later you are telling me everything about you two."

"Deal" said Jonathan and Nancy in unison.

"And now I'm going to distract everybody so you can stay here and have a dance without anyone noticing how in love you two are. Really, I can't believe that I thought you had another girlfriend that wasn't Nancy; you only have to look at you two for two seconds to realize you are in love." He grabbed Robin's arms. "Come on, Robin."

"Whatever you say, Detective Steve" replied Robin, laughing.

"Oh, you guys are never going to stop with this, right?"

Their voices were lower now since they were moving away, but Nancy and Jonathan laughed at their friends' conversation. They were both alone now in a little corner where no one could see them and they could hear the music very, very softly.

"So, Nancy Wheeler" Jonathan reached out a hand to Nancy "would you have this dance with me?"

"It would be my pleasure " she took his hand "but I don't know how we are going to dance; I can't practically hear the music."

"I can sing" offered Jonathan.

"Jonathan Byers? Sing?" She laughed at that but looked at him with bright eyes.

"Anything for you"

Jonathan started to mumble the first song that came to his mind in a low, soft voice. Nancy came closer to him and placed her head on his chest, both dancing in sync with their hearts beating at the same time.

Notes:

Sorry for taking so long to update, but I came back to class, and I've been a little bit busy. Anyway, I hope you like this chapter; even though it is a little bit short, I think it's cute!!! Also, I have one more chapter planned. Yay! :)

Notes:

I was thinking of writing a second part with everyone else discovering that they are back together, but I'm not sure. So let me know if you would like that !!
