Chapter Text
Kim Dokja, who’s currently being strangled, looks ethereal backdropped in the light of the setting sun. The warm gold rays shroud his figure, giving his silky black hair a halo. There is a pretty flush to his face and when those watery eyes glance over Yoo Joonghyuk’s shoulder they pin Hua Lian in place.
Yoo Joonghyuk, who’s currently strangling Kim Dokja, sees that the man’s attention is divided and finds the two other men, Kim Namwoon and Hua Lian, standing at the edge of the golden bridge. Yoo Joonghyuk, still pinning the men down with his stare, addresses Kim Dokja.
“Do you know him?”
“No, you bastard.”
Kim Dokja’s insult is ruined by the fact that the proclaimed bastard has his hand around the reader’s throat. And judging by the gargled sound that comes out after, Yoo Joonghyuk tightened his hand to remind him of this.
Hua Lian, watching this from afar, grabs Kim Namwoon’s arm and drags him across the bridge before the protagonist can make any rash decisions.
“Let’s leave those two to their companionship.” Hua Lian would rather not ruin this important bonding moment.
[Constellation Demonic-Like Judge of Fire is curious to the relationship between incarnations Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk.]
Kim Namwoon, still trapped in Hua Lian’s grasp, tugs on his arm. Hua Lian is still in a good mood, so he relents and lets the teenager walk on his own.
“You know those two?”
“No, I know of them. One is a gamer and the other makes a good squid.” A slight chuckle leaves Hua Lian’s chest at the inside joke.
“A cook?” There is a furrow between Kim Namwoon’s brows as he asks.
“Not professionally.” Kim Namwoon gives the back of his head a weird look, before leaving it be.
They only have to walk a few more yards before they reach the end of the bridge and enter Oksu station. There in the entrance four people are waiting: it’s the other 3807 survivors.
[Sub Scenario — "Escape” completed]
[You have been rewarded 200 coins]
The group perks up at the sight of them coming, only to droop again when they find it to be strangers instead of Kim Dokja. The woman, Hua Lian knows to be Yoo Sangah, steps forward hesitantly.
She’s a gorgeous woman, a pale Korean face with pale brown hair and eyes, and when she speaks her voice sounds like bells. She’s wearing her office outfit still; a splatter of blood stains her white blouse and there’s a run in her stockings.
“You haven’t happened to see a man named Kim Dokja, have you? He was wearing a white dress shirt. Short black hair, um black eyes too?” When she gets to his description she pauses, like she’s having difficulty remembering what exactly he looked like.
“Yes, we did,” Hua Lian smiles pleasantly, he’s hurt on Kim Dokja’s behalf for the plain description, “He was having a pleasant conversation with some other guy when we walked by.”
Kim Namwoon snickers somewhere behind him, a cursory glance reveals that he’s looting some woman’s purse. Very good, Namwoon-nim! However, it is getting some aghast looks from the other adults present. Kim Dokja wasn’t wrong when he said kids adjusted the fastest, Hua Lian muses to himself.
“Namwoon-nim, make sure not to grab anything useless, please.” Hua Lian would rather only grab essentials for now. He and Lee Gilyoung are the only ones carrying bags.
Kim Namwoon lets out a long sigh, before throwing the wad of cash he had just grabbed aside. Hua Lian doesn’t quite know what he was planning to do with the money, maybe use it as kindling.
“You’re just going to let him steal that?” Lee Hyunsung says it accusingly, but he was also simply curious.
“They aren’t using it anymore.” It was a fact that made the other adults grimace lightly.
They hear someone coming down the stairs and Yoo Sangah, Lee Hyunsung, and Lee Gilyoung all looked toward the noise with hopeful faces. They are once again dashed as only Yoo Joonghyuk comes through the entrance.
Yoo Joonghyuk glances over the crowd, pausing over Hua Lian and Kim Namwoon momentarily, before he marches forward.
“Hey, there.” Hua Lian says with a pleasant smile when the protagonist stops before him. The taller male has an unpleasant look on his face, like he’s considering if he should just lop off the twenty-four-year-old man’s head or not. It makes Hua Lian irritated that even when considering manslaughter, the taller male looks like he should be on a Vouge cover. The redhead is disrupted from his staring when the brooding man finally opens his mouth.
“What are you doing here?” It’s not a question directed at Hua Lian. He feels Wu Ming stir at the man’s voice.
Kim Namwoon, the loyal teenager he his, senses something is off and meanders over. He’s not subtle in his eavesdropping.
“Are you talking about him?” Hua Lian makes a small gesture towards the sky, “He read once about dumplings and wanted to try some.” He says it with a nice, thoughtless smile. Like they are talking about the weather and not a higher being.
Yoo Joonghyuk’s jaw twitches. He must have seen where Kim Namwoon’s sponsor had changed earlier.
“He promises he won’t get in the way of your ending. In fact, he’d rather like to help you at times.” Hua Lian sticks out his hand, “So let’s call ourselves allies, yeah? You scratch my back and we’ll scratch yours.”
Yoo Joonghyuk looks at the pale hand.
“I’ll let you watch over him, but I’ll want him at times.” And with that Yoo Joonghyuk walks away. Wu Ming is oddly active in the back of his head for a moment, before he finally settles back into his sleep.
Hua Lian lets his outstretched hand drop with a quiet ‘rude’ before turning to the group.
“The time limit has passed, you can wait a bit longer for your friend, but I don’t think he’ll be coming anytime soon. It’d be better to move on for now.” And like the scenarios are agreeing with him a ‘ding’ sounds out and new screens pop before them all.
[The second Main Scenario is about to begin.]
[The land in this scenario area is heavily polluted.]
[Hold your breath and consider seeking shelter underground as quickly as possible.]
“Can we loot some stores first? I want to get out of this uniform.” Kim Namwoon voices from his side.
“Yeah, we’ll see if we can’t kill some monsters for coins as well.” To the rest of the group he says, “Y’all can come with, it might be good to grab supplies while we can. And there's safety in numbers.”
The three adults share glances, and Lee Gilyoung comes up to Hua Lian while the others start whispering amongst each other. Hua Lian can understand their hesitation, they don’t know him, and they may want to wait for Kim Dokja longer.
“Is Hyung not coming back?” It’s a question that doesn’t have a lot of emotion in it, but the redhead can see the sadness in the kids’ eyes. Hua Lian crouches before him and pats his fluffy hair gently.
“I’m sure he is, kid. But it might be better to take this head start to get supplies now so that when Kim Dokja gets back we won’t all have to rely on him too heavily. What’s your name, kid?” Lee Gilyoung doesn’t seem to catch the ‘we’ of the statement, but he perks up at the thought of helping the missing man.
“Mkay, Red-hyung, my name is Lee Gilyoung.” It’s said quietly.
Kim Namwoon speaks up, having felt left out, “Hey, that isn’t Hyung, to you. Hyung is the creepy guy, this is Ant-Lian.”
The redhead’s eye twitches lightly at the reminder of the weird nickname, but before he can say anything Lee Gilyoung has already spoken.
“Why do you call, Red-hyung, Ant-Lian?” The child’s head tilts to the left slightly with the question.
Kim Namwoon, happy with the attention, explains proudly, “Because Ant-Lian saved the day with his ant farm, that’s why.”
Wow, and they say Shakespear is dead.
Lee Gilyoung turns to the man excitedly, “You had an ant farm?!”
“Mm, I had a ghost ant colony I’d been growing over the years.” Hua Lian feels a little nostalgic thinking of his long-time roommates.
Lee Gilyoung doesn’t say anything more, but he has a sparkly content look in his eyes.
Finally, the three other adults in the room, mostly Yoo Sangah and Lee Hyunsung, reach an agreement and they come over.
“My name is Lee Hyunsung,” he sticks out his hand as he says it, and Hua Lian gets up to shake it, “We’ll go with you for now, as you said, safety in numbers.” The former lieutenant has a large frame; his black hair is shaved into a buzz cut that flatters his tanned skin. His hand is rough with calluses, but it isn’t unpleasant.
Yoo Sangah chimes in next, “This doesn’t mean we’ll stick with your group though,” She doesn’t say it meanly, “This is nothing against you two, we are still waiting for our friend. And my name is Yoo Sangah, by the way.” She loses her momentum as she speaks.
“I understand completely. We weren’t planning on going far, just hitting a few stores before finding the nearest underground station. I’m Hua Lian and this here is Kim Namwoon.”
As the young man smiles and motions towards the white-haired teenager, Kim Namwoon gives them all an appraising once-over, before nodding.
“Don’t hold us back too much.” If Hua Lian didn’t know better, he’d think the teen was trying to give his best Yoo Joonghyuk impression.
“Han Myungoh.” The middle-aged man says in a cocky tone and sticks out his hand.
Hua Lian ignores him and goes for the stairs, the others following close behind. Han Myungoh is struck still for a moment, before he too follows behind.
[Some constellations are happy with this group’s plan.]
[Some constellations are hoping to see some action.]
[You have been sponsored 1,000 coins]
“Thank you, constellation-nims, for the sponsorship. We will try to keep it interesting.” Hua Lian says, like a scammer.
[Constellation Secretive Plotter is glad you talk to yourself.]
[Constellation Secretive Plotter sponsors you 500 coins.]
“Thank you for the 500-coin sponsorship, Plotter-nim.” Hua Lian puts on his best Twitch Streamer impression.
Lee Hyunsung gives him an odd glance for his muttering, before shaking his head with a small smile.
“Where are we going first?”
“Well, I was thinking we hit a general store first. Try to take some food and water while it’s still there. First-aid, more comfortable clothes too.” Hua Lian works through his thought process aloud. “We should hurry though; it won’t take long for the poison gases to spread.”
At the mention of it the group looks ahead, where they can see on the horizon, maybe a few blocks over a thick fog spreading.
“How are we going to get ahead of that?” Yoo Sangah’s worry is heavy in her tone.
“We won’t.” And with that Hua Lian looks to the sky. “You won’t be able to lend us a hand, will you? It will be inconvenient for me to do it.” It’s said in a mutter under his breath.
{You don’t need to talk out loud, human.}
[Constellation Fragment ‘With No Name’ looks down upon his incarnation.]
[Constellation Fragment ‘With No Name’ has gifted 6 "Ellain Monkey's Lungs" to incarnation Kim Namwoon.]
“Thanks, Ant-hyung.” Kim Namwoon grumbles as the monkey lungs appear in a flash before him. He passes one to everyone unhappily, sad he couldn’t hoard them, at Hua Lian’s prompting.
“Don’t use them till the gas actually gets here. They only last 20 minutes.” Hua Lian explains when he sees Han Myungoh put it up to his mouth.
“How do you know all this, Hua Lian-ssi?” Yoo Sangah asks after a quiet ‘thank you’ to Kim Namwoon. Lee Hyunsung chimes in quickly as well.
“You are very levelheaded for the situation.” There is a tone of respect laced through the statement.
“Oh, no, you have me pinned down all wrong,” Hua Lian says with a wave of his hand, “My skill just helps me keep calm, and my sponsor is very chatty. Really, if not for that I’d be a puddle of nerves.”
Yes, he has the skill [Poker Face] but it doesn’t actually tone down his emotions, just his expression and body language. And his ‘sponsor’, if you can even call his roommate that, has been very quiet in the corner of Hua Lian’s brain he’d carved out for himself.
Yoo Sangah and Lee Hyunsung gives their own little ‘mm’s and ‘ah’s at this and they each turn their attention elsewhere.
A silence overtakes the group as they head for the nearest general store a block over. It’s not an unpleasant one, rather everyone is taking the time to settle themselves in this new reality and the group they’ve found themselves in.
As they reach the entrance of the store the group pauses. It looks empty at the moment, everyone still alive must have made for the nearest stations. The windows are busted in however, and the lights flicker; the store looks like it should be in a horror movie. Blood was splattered over parts of the walls and floor, accompanied by a few headless bodies of varying age and gender. Food and other miscellaneous items were knocked onto the floor from where one shelf had been tipped over, crushing someone underneath it. It was an unfortunate sight, and a grim reminder of the new world.
Kim Namwoon looks relatively unaffected by the sight before him and turns to Hua Lian, who Lee Gilyoung has a tight grip of, and speaks in a confident drawl.
“We should split up into groups to grab supplies as quickly as possible, yeah? I call dibs on Ant-Lian.”
With no other pause, he grabs the redhead’s other hand and drags the two behind him.
“Make sure to grab backpacks everyone!” Hua Lian calls as they disappear behind the corner into the camping supplies.
Kim Namwoon picks up a register and smashes the glass display protecting the hunting knives and starts the process of picking one he liked. He surprisingly ends up with a pretty basic utilitarian one. Hua Lian doesn’t know enough about these things to know the make, but it looks like a decent one.
“Namwoon-nim, you look knowledgeable of these things, do you think you could pick one for Gilyoung-ah and me?” Namwoon’s eyes sparkle at the request, and he gives an excited ‘mm’ and gets back to browsing.
“Okay, Gilyoung-ah, let’s find us some more medical supplies.”
Lee Gilyoung follows behind Hua Lian like a duckling, and they make their way to the medical aisle a few feet over. As they pass through the redhead can make out Yoo Sangah’s head over in the clothing section and Lee Hyunsung in the food department. Hua Lian is glad his trust was rightly placed in them being productive without prompt. Those two had always been very levelheaded and competent in the novel, if a bit emotional. Very good companions, those two.
Hua Lian stuffs some bandages, ointments, and rubbing alcohol into Gilyoung’s bag. The kid is very patient as Hua Lian explains the use and important of certain items. He wants to make sure the kid is prepared for it if he ever has to use the items without help. He doesn’t wish that fate for the kid, for if he ever has to use the medical supplies it means something bad had happened; however, Hua Lian would feel like an asshole if coddling the kid causes Gilyoung to be hurt in the future.
When he sees them, he also puts some tampons and pads in there. He doesn’t know which kind the women of the group will prefer, so better to have both than none.
“It’s a women’s product.” Is all the adult male could muster at Gilyoung’s curious glance. He’d rather not teach this kid about menstrual cycles right now.
Once Hua Lian is confident in the supplies they gathered, they go to look for Kim Namwoon. They find him a few aisles over grabbing flashlights and batteries to stuff into the backpack he must have grabbed off some wall. Kim Namwoon perks up when he sees the two round the corner.
“I’m grabbing some lights and batteries right now, but I already have a map, compass, a few walkies, a crank-charger, duct-tap, can openers, and a couple lighters,” the teenager pauses, before reaching into his back and pulling out two sheathed knifes, “This is y’all’s.”
He hands Lee Gilyoung a pocketknife and Hua Lian a knife that looks similar to the one he picked out for himself. While Hua Lian is clipping it to his belt, he sees Kim Namwoon explaining how to use the pocketknife to the child.
“You did a really good job, Namwoon-nim, I wouldn’t have thought of a lot of this.” It’s well-deserved praise. He really hadn’t thought of a lot of it, and from the screens popping up in the teens’ face he’s getting a lot of praise from the constellations as well.
The white-haired male seems to preen under the attention, “I thought of the zombie apocalypse a lot as a kid.”
Hua Lian doesn’t know what to say to that.
Gilyoung-ah says something to Kim Namwoon that has him barking out a laugh as he pats the kid’s head.
“Let’s grab some clothes and running shoes while we have the time.” The younger two sober up and nod succinctly, making their way to the clothing section in the front.
It doesn’t take long for all three males to find more comfortable clothes and proper shoes, before they are all going to the doors where the other adults have gathered.
Likewise, they had also grabbed backpacks to fill with supplies and changed into more fitting clothes and shoes. They take a quick stock revealing Lee Hyunsung had grabbed preservable food and water and Yoo Sangah had the forethought to grab some hygiene items like toothpaste and soap for everyone. Han Myungoh doesn’t share what he had grabbed but Hua Lian doesn’t really care, he won’t be staying with the group long.
[Constellation Demonic-Like Judge of Fire is proud of this group’s preparations.]
[Constellation Demonic-Like Judge of Fire sponsors 500 coins.]
[Constellation Secretive Plotter is content with this group thinking.]
[Constellation Secretive Plotter sponsors 500 coins.]
“Thank you for the 500-coin sponsorships, Judge-nim and Plotter-Nim.” Hua Lian thanks the sky before turning his attention to the group gathered. “Good job, everyone. You all grabbed really good supplies.” It’s an awkward compliment pared with a thumbs up, but Lee Hyunsung perks up like he had been handed a gold medal.
[Constellation Demonic-Like Judge of Fire is happy with this show of comradery.]
“We should go, the fog has settled in the area and it’s starting to come through the door.” Yoo Sangah says it with a confidence that surprises Hua Lian for a moment, before he nods.
“Mm, the closest station would be Geumho station, yeah?”
“Yeah, it is, I checked the map earlier.”
With that the group grabs their [Ellain Monkey's Lungs] and places them in their mouths. Lee Gilyoung grabs Hua Lian’s hand as they make for the entrance.
Before the door could open Hua Lian makes a request.
“Let’s travel in formation, we don’t know what’s out there right now. Hyunsung-ssi, Namwoon-nim, and I can take the front and Sangah-ssi, Myungoh-ajussi, and Gilyoung-ah can take the rear.” He tags on a quick, “Gilyoung-ah in the middle, please.”
No one has complaints so they get in formation as they leave the building.
Luckily not too many monsters were around just yet, just a few small bear-dog looking creatures that they made quick work of, before they made it to Guemho Station. Hua Lian subtly directs them to Exit Four, this is where the group is supposed to gather when they meet up with Dokja again if memory serves right.
Luckly, there is no resistance in entering the station, as it was still too early for the hierarchy to have formed.
Inside, there’s around ninety people scattered throughout the station of various ages and genders. Most look to be in varying degree of shock; some are staring into space with listless expressions while others are crying silently. Few are huddled in groups, comforting each other or talking in quiet tones.
However, there is a small group of men gathering in the far corner, talking in confident drawls and smooth tones, they all look unaffected by the events that had taken place only a few hours earlier. Hua Lian assumes these are the men that will become that foundation of the Major Group as he can faintly make out a blonde man in a black turtle-neck sweater in the center; Cheon Inho.
The groups settles into a section of free seats, he ends up squeezed between Namwoon-nim and Gilyoung-ah, as he considers the situation. He really doesn’t want their stuff to be taken; it would be annoying if that store trip was for nothing. As he thinks this he feels something in the back of his head shift and a voice ring through his head.
{I would just kill them.}
That’s the easy option, the one the protagonist would pick, but he’d rather not kill someone for such a lame reason. Plus, the food would still be taken when the Dokkaebi comes around. With that thought, maybe he should give the food out.
Not for free of course, but it could save the Minor Group from some problems later. And it would be taken later anyways. Yes, they need to get use to hunting their own food, and premade food is a convenience they won’t have for long. Probably better to lose it now instead of later, when it will hurt more.
They’re keeping the rest of the supplies though. Those were the true boon of the store trip.
“Lian-hyung,” his attention is snapped by the small child to his right, “what did you do before this?”
It was an unexpected question, he didn’t take Gilyoung-ah for the type to use icebreakers. A cursory glance reveals the reason though; the rest of the group are really not good at eavesdropping. Very immature to use the small, cute child as a way of fishing for information.
“Well, Gilyoung-ah, I used to work at a kick boxing studio.”
Kim Namwoon’s head snaps over, “Really, Ant-Lian?! You weren’t an ant farmer?” He sounds oddly betrayed.
“I told you, I wasn’t an ant farmer.” Ant-Lian grumbles, quietly he mumbles a ‘why would I lie about that?’
“Then could you teach me kick boxing, Lian-hyung?” Gilyoung-ah asks it hesitantly, but hopefully.
“Me, too! Me, too! You have to teach me, you promised to make me strong, too!” Kim Namwoon shakes his shoulder; he doesn’t act like a nineteen-year-old, Hua Lian thinks to himself.
“I don’t see why I shouldn’t. It’s better to know these things then to not.” Both boys beside him give their own little ‘yay’s.
Getting up, Hua Lian finds an empty corner and starts explaining the basics to the boys. As he’s teaching, he can see Yoo Sangah and, shockingly, Jung Heewon watching from the side. Yoo Sangah looks like she’s trying to learn through osmosis, and Jung Heewon is watching him appraisingly, like she’s trying to see how knowledgeable in the subject he actually is.
He’s a little hurt, but he understands, no one immediately believes him when he explains his occupation either. He has a slight figure and only stands at 171cm, people joke that a harsh wind could blow him away.
As he lets the boys practice jabs, Jung Heewon finally approaches, “Hey, Noona,” It’s only thanks to [Poker Face] that his jaw doesn’t fall to the floor, “You’re good, you know any kendo?”
He really doesn’t know what to say. He hears Kim Namwoon giggling behind him, and the ‘noona’ can only watch blankly as Yoo Sangah whispers something in Jung Heewon’s ear.
“He’s a man!? How is that fair? His lashes are longer than mine…” She tried to whisper it, but Kim Namwoon could hear it from where he was, judging by the increased volume of his laughter. Between his laughs he coughs out an ‘Ant-Noona’. Gilyoung-ah finally hits him from the sound of the ‘ah—that hurt, shrimp!’. What a filial child. Unlike his rude incarnation, curses.

[Constellation Demonic-Like Judge of Fire is touched by your thoughtfulness.]
“Does he talk to the constellations like that often?”
“Mhm, they seem to like it though.”
Jung Heewon finally sicks her hand out to Hua Lian, dragging his attention away from the sponsoring constellations. Now that she has his attention she smiles awkwardly.
“Sorry for that, you’re just very pretty is all. My names Jung Heewon, yours?” Her hair runs over her shoulders like a black curtain, and her brown eyes look as delectable as chocolate. The white button down she’s wearing is stained at the bottom with dried blood, but her eyes seem clear of guilt. It must have been a bad person then.
“Hua Lian, don’t worry about it. You aren’t the first, you probably won’t be the last.” He shakes her hand; she has a strong grip.
“Still, sorry. But my question still stands, you know any kendo?” Her smile finally loses the awkward tinge. Her real smile is gorgeous. It puts her straight teeth on display, framed by the dimples that crease her cheeks, her chocolate eyes sparkle in the bright fluorescent lights of the station.
“No, I couldn’t afford them, but the art has always interested me.” He says it with his own smile, her excitement contagious.
“Damn, that’s a shame, I would have loved to spar. I actually came over to ask if I could join your lesson? I’m not that good at hand-to-hand and I wanted to brush up, if that’s fine? I know it’s different teaching adults.”
Hua Lian blinks for at her for a second, it gives his still smiling face a thoughtless look.
“Oh! No, please, feel free to join. But you have to promise to teach me some kendo.”
“Deal.”
Hua Lian turns to Yoo Sangah, who had been watching his exchange with a small smile, and adds a quick, “Feel free to join as well Sangah-ssi. Kick boxing is sadly a subject you have to physically practice getting the hang of. You might build bad habits otherwise.”
Before he gets a response, he returns to the other boys, who had returned to practicing while the adults were talking.
The rest of the day went on like this, and Jung Heewon gave as good of a rundown as she could without any practice swords, before they returned to where Lee Hyunsung was watching their bags. At some point in the time they were gone, Han Myungoh had taken his bag and left to, Hua Lian guesses, the Major group.
Lee Hyunsung explains that a blond man had started going up to the more put together looking men and offering them positions in the Major Group. The former lieutenant had rejected his offer, but Han Myungoh had snatched up his chance when asked.
Hua Lian makes sure to reassure Lee Hyunsung when he gets that sad, kicked puppy look, and passes out some food to the group and the loitering Jung Heewon. Who, at that silent conformation, sits with the group.
“So, you know I worked at a kick boxing studio, what did y’all do?”
Dinner flowed with conversation morning the past world. Work, hobbies, tv shows, movies, and music tastes were all useless in this present. The passion still existed in the heart, but indulging would only bring the bitter taste of nostalgia. So, for tonight they shared a eulogy for yesterday and prepared one another for tomorrow. For tomorrow, small things like soap preferences and favored seasonings would be useless. Still forever apart of them, but it will be buried under the crimson that will soon paint them all
