Chapter Text
The desert sprawled endlessly below, golden and glittering under the midday sun, its sands shifting lazily with the whispering wind. The towers of Gallifrey Prime rose behind them, now straightened, restored, gleaming in radiant perfection. Yet, for all their grandeur, the palace felt smaller to Rose now — smaller than the endless expanse of possibility stretching before them.
The TARDIS stood silent, unassuming, against the dunes, blue as a summer sky yet humming faintly with a familiar, steady energy. The Doctor adjusted his coat, hair tousled by the desert breeze, eyes alight with that irrepressible spark of mischief and wonder.
“Well,” he said lightly, brushing sand from his boots, “I suppose it’s time to go. And leave behind a city that’ll never quite forget us.”
Rose stepped forward, arms crossed loosely, hair fluttering around her face. “Do you ever stop thinking about the consequences of your adventures?” she asked, voice tinged with amusement and exasperation.
The Doctor grinned, tilting his head in that infuriatingly charming way. “Consequences, my dear, are merely… optional. Or at least… guidelines.”
She rolled her eyes, laughing softly despite herself. “Guidelines, right. That’s comforting.”
He opened the TARDIS door with a dramatic flourish, blue light spilling out, humming invitingly. “Come along, then. Stars aren’t going to explore themselves, and I’ve got a universe full of chaos waiting for us.”
Rose hesitated only for a heartbeat, looking back at the palace one last time. The city gleamed in the sunlight, towers tall and proud, citizens bustling with life, oblivious to the danger they had narrowly escaped. She felt a twinge of nostalgia, a flicker of longing — but also exhilaration.
“I’m coming,” she said firmly, a determined glint in her eye.
“Splendid!” the Doctor exclaimed, sweeping inside with dramatic flair. “And don’t worry, I promise we’ll have just enough trouble to make it interesting.”
With a low rumble and a familiar wheeze, the TARDIS began to rise, slowly at first, then faster, lifting over the desert. Sand swirled below like liquid gold, shimmering under the TARDIS’s rising shadow. Rose pressed her hands against the console, watching the city shrink beneath them, a smile tugging at her lips.
“You know,” she said quietly, leaning toward the Doctor, “it’s kind of beautiful. All of it… the chaos, the victories… even the danger.”
The Doctor glanced at her, eyes warm and mischievous. “That’s the point, Rose. Adventure is messy, glorious… and completely ours.”
The TARDIS hummed louder, lifting higher. The wind howled softly through the desert below, carrying with it faint whispers, as if the dunes themselves had begun to remember.

By the time the TARDIS vanished into the endless blue above, stories had already begun to spread. Tales of the golden city’s restoration, of towers bent back into perfection, of citizens freed from impossible tyranny — but the story that lingered most was about the thief.
The thief who had stolen, danced on rooftops, laughed in the face of danger, and given everything back.
“People will talk,” Rose said, leaning against the console, voice thoughtful. “They’ll tell tales. Make legends. Maybe even exaggerate a little.”
The Doctor chuckled, voice light and wistful. “Ah, legends. I rather like the idea of leaving a few mysteries behind. A little chaos in the stories… keeps life interesting.”
Rose laughed softly, eyes sparkling. “A thief who gave everything back… that’s a good story. But it’s not just a story, is it?”
He shook his head, a faint grin tugging at his lips. “No, Rose. It’s the truth, wrapped in a little mischief, and told by those who survived to tell it. That’s the way it should be.”
The TARDIS leapt upward, slipping silently through the sky, stars beginning to appear in the darkening desert horizon. Dust and wind swirled below, sparkling like gold, as if the desert itself had been rewritten in their image.
Rose pressed her hand to the console, smiling, voice soft but certain. “Where to first?”
The Doctor’s grin broadened, eyes gleaming with mischief and promise. “Anywhere the stars will take us… and just a little bit further than anyone expects.”
Above them, the first stars blinked into life. Below them, the desert whispered a new tale — of a thief who had given everything back, and a companion who chose the freedom of the universe over a gilded cage.
And so, the legend began anew.
