Chapter Text
Sans was standing there.
The human had been fighting him, but then they disappeared.
He doesn’t know where they went. There was no one left in the underground they could kill. The timeline hadn’t been reset.
They had to come back eventually.
And when they did, he would be there.
For Papyrus.
His hand tightened around the scarf.
A noise caught his attention.
He turned around and stared shakily at the doorway.
It was getting louder.
Suddenly, two kids burst from the door, one dragging the other behind him, and they ran as fast as they could down the judgment hall.
What were these kids doing here? They weren’t humans, but all of the monsters were dead.
Just behind them, a golden flower bursts from the doorway as well, his vines holding him up and walking him around like spider legs.
“Get back here.” He yelled at the two.
That flower.
No wonder they seemed scared.
The kids spot Sans and the one dragging the other picks up the pace, running up to him.
”Heya kiddos.” He said when they got close.
”We need help.” The boy said frantically, out of breath.
”I can see that.” Sans replied calmly. “Go ahead and keep running, I’ll deal with this guy.
He nods vigorously and bolts past Sans. The kid he was dragging gave him a quick “Thank you.” As they get dragged after him.
Sans nods at the two and then turns back to Flowey.
”Oh! Sans.” Flowey exclaimed, acting as though he didn’t see him. “You sure you wanna do this?” He asked in a teasing tone.
He sighs. “Trust me, buddy, I don’t.”
Flowey giggles.
He turns and gets ready. “But I will.”
Cuphead ran and ran and ran.
Niko was trying to keep up but was failing.
He was starting to get tired, but he couldn’t stop.
Up ahead he saw a building.
He could make it there.
He speeds up, as he runs down the long winding road and he runs up the stairs to the building.
As soon as he is up he stops to take a knee and rest. Niko walks in front of him and begins to explore, entering a room to the left.
The house is cozy, but eerie at the same time. Everything is the same shade of dull grey except for the golden flowers everywhere.
Cuphead shutters at the sight of the flowers.
The rustling in the next room stops, and once he had rested a bit Cuphead stood up to see what Niko was doing.
The next room had a bookshelf against the wall next to an empty fireplace. A cozy rocking chair sits in front of the fireplace, and a table sits nearby with a singular golden flower sitting on top once again.
Niko is sitting at the table looking down with a somber expression, their face hidden.
Cuphead looks at them for a moment. They don’t usually look that sad.
Suddenly, a sob escapes Niko, and within a few seconds they are crying their eyes out.
Cuphead rushes over to them and pats them on the shoulder. “N-Niko, bud, what’s wrong?”
They don’t respond through their tears, and Cuphead sits down next to them while he waits to calm down.
Eventually Niko manages to stifle their sadness to a sniffle, and they look up at Cuphead with their yellow glowing eyes.
”I- I lost the Sun.”
Cuphead’s own eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, your light thing? I grabbed it but we must’ve-”
”No.” They interrupted him before he could continue. “The lamp you got wasn’t the right one. I noticed when I woke up that it was the wrong one, but you were in trouble so I didn’t have time to…”
They try to hold back their tears but they fail and burst out crying once again. As they sob they choke out. “They were all counting on me, and now they’re all gone.”
”He-hey, Niko, don’t cry!” Cuphead tries to be comforting but comes up short. What would Muggsy say in a situation like this? “I, uh, do you wanna talk about it?”
They take a deep breath and calm down to the best of their ability. They look down into their lap as they speak. “They were all counting on me, and it was so scary. Then I get transported to another world and I don’t know if they’re okay and then that scary flower chases us and I… I just want to see my mom again!”
They cry for the third time and Cuphead waits as patiently as he can, trying to not make it awkward by patting them on the back.
They wipe the tears off their face with their hoody and look up at Cuphead with a sorry smile. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay..” He returned the smile back. “I get it if you feel homesick.” He turns his head to the side. “To be honest, I couldn’t feel more sick than I am right now, without my brother.”
Niko turned their head in curiosity.
“He’s the best brother ever, and he was the only one who could put up with my antics back home. He’s the responsible one, the one who always knows what to do… I feel lost without him.”
They sit there in silence for a moment, Niko not expecting for Cuphead to get serious all of a sudden. He snaps back to reality and turns his head to face Niko again.
“Anyway, sorry to get so heavy on ya Niko.”
“No worries.”
He stands up and dusts off his pants. “We should probably keep going. The skeleton guy said he would hold off Flowey, but we can’t be sure if he can. We should stay far away from wherever he is and look for a portal to get out of here.”
“Yeah, I think so too.” Niko nods in agreement. “His name is Flowey? What a funny name.”
Cuphead laughs. “Yeah, I guess.” He helps Niko off the chair and motions for them to follow him. “C’mon, we can take it slow this time.”
