A Red Rose Grew Up out of Ice Frozen Ground

Chapter 2: 2026 Winter Olympics (or the honeymoon montage)

Summary:

It has been four years since the last olympics Minjeong and Karina attended on opposing teams, but this year, they are on the same team and are better than ever—together.

Notes:

Hiiii... I love great women... great queer women... Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn, you have my heart...

ANYWAY... Here's a terribly written epilogue of sorts that I wrote just now in four hours because I couldn't stop thinking about Alysa Liu.

Enjoy! <3

Chapter Text

“Should I get a piercing…” Minjeong hums absentmindedly, one hand holding her phone as her thumb scrolls.

“What?” Jimin asks.

“She’s just so cool,” Minjeong whines, showing her phone screen to Jimin, who’s lying on her stomach, chin now pressed against Minjeong’s chest as she scoots up and sees a video of Alysa Liu practising her skating routine. “Was I this cool at twenty?”

“Keep playing with my hair." Jimin nudges her and Minjeong’s other hand returns to its original place. “She is cool, but can you relax? You’re only twenty-two, silly.”

“But should I still get piercings?” Minjeong pouts.

“Um, your mother would have your head. And mine for encouraging you.” Jimin snorts.

“All I’m hearing is that you’re all for it.” Minjeong smirks.

“I think snakebites would look hot on you.” Jimin grins and despite being in love with Jimin and having her as a girlfriend for over four years, a blush still rises on her face and Jimin laughs in her face.

“I’m totally doing it.” Minjeong squeals, kissing Jimin’s lips before going on her phone to see nearby piercing parlours.

It’s been four years since the last winter Olympic games in 2022, and in all of those years, Minjeong and Jimin had faithfully remained together as one of gen-z’s favourite couples, and only due to Jimin’s daily posts she made on instagram, using Minjeong as a prop most of the time. Now in 2026, they were due to compete in the upcoming Winter Olympic games in Milan and Minjeong was simply ecstatic at the thought of being on the same team as Jimin.

During their four years awaiting the next olympic cycle, they spent enough time away from training on the ice and instead indulged in their lives. Minjeong continuously focused on her training but also took up time to work part-time at a puppy café, which she loved doing with all her might even if she came home to Jimin and her apartment in Seoul covered in fur and smelling faintly of wet dog. Jimin did a lot of different things after settling back in her hometown. She took up a teaching degree, volunteered with youth and women, spent much time on leisurely walks with her puppy girlfriend, and invested in seeing a psychologist as well as a physical therapist.

So their four years were well spent and now the Olympics were coming and Jimin was simply so excited to be on the ice again on her own terms without anyone forcing her down into a certain shape.

They had recently competed in the four continents championships, then moved onto nationals where Jimin and Minjeong rightfully earned their places on the olympic team as single skaters.

Minjeong was determined to win this year and Jimin was all the more supportive of her. Jimin didn’t care much for the competition anymore, but she loved skating still and it was embedded into her bones. So she would compete with a free heart and do what she loves with the woman she adores right by her side.

🏅⛸️❄️

Two months before the Olympics, Minjeong and Jimin had ended a practice session at their local rink, leaving Minjeong’s coaches—Seulgi and Irene—and Jimin’s coaches, Wendy, joy and Yeri, equally as confused since both girls were notorious for overstaying a practice every time.

Minjeong had booked an appointment to pierce her lips without telling anyone and dragged Jimin along for moral support, and the taller woman was silently thirsting over the mental image of Minjeong with piercings paired with her striking short, dark hair.

When her lips were pierced on both sides, Minjeong had put on a brave face but she whined like a puppy and Jimin had giggled and tried to hold it in but when a tear slipped from Minjeong’s right eye, she burst into laughter and Minjeong pouted as her girlfriend found joy in her pain. Jimin had kissed her head and twisted her hair comfortingly to soothe her, despite how silly Minjeong looked with her swollen bottom lip.

That following week, Jimin dyed her hair a red wine colour, and Minjeong swooned so hard that she cried when she couldn’t kiss Jimin properly because her lip hurt.

But now, on the way to the olympics, Minjeong’s lips were healed and she could not keep her hands or mouth to herself and Jimin was kind of addicted to the way Minjeong’s lip rings felt against her own plush lips. They were scolded by their coaches and training team often for being too lovey-dovey, but they couldn’t help it at all.

The world wanted to see a rivalry between them since they joined the same team all those years ago, but then when they both announced their relationship two years after the previous olympics, everyone was stunned into silence. Of course they faced backlash and it was difficult to be brave sometimes, but they loved each other and that was the biggest strength they ever needed.

🏅⛸️❄️

“Say hi to them.” Jimin rolls her eyes despite the fond smile on her lips as she sees Minjeong eyeing Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn.

“What?” Minjeong’s eyes widened. “No way.”

“Stop staring at them then.” Jimin laughs.

“I’m shy.” Minjeong whines. “You speak to them! You speak Russian!”

“What does that have to do with saying hi?” Jimin grins.

“You’re multilingual… maybe you speak better English.” Minjeong pouts and Jimin only laughs harder.

Jimin drags a reluctant Minjeong over and they end up greeting the two American athletes with the poorest English they both managed to muster together, but it still got the point across, and Alysa complimented Minjeong on her piercings and Amber gushed about Jimin’s hair, which was easy to understand.

Soon, the competitions began and Jimin and Minjeong got into their zones.

“An unbelievable story made believable, Yu Jimin! Coming from Seoul, Korea and now taking part on the National team after her resignation from her previous team.” The announcer begins as Jimin walks out to the ice. She looks over her shoulder and sees her team along with Minjeong beaming at her and she mouths ‘I love you’ to Minjeong before turning back around. “Jimin has had a long journey over the years and has shown her true artistry after winning the Worlds previously and the nationals!”

Jimin circles the ice and takes place in the centre with her red wine hair neatly held in a low bun. She rolls her shoulders and smooths out her costume and takes a deep breath as she prepares for her short program.

‘Can’t catch me now by Olivia Rodrigo (Jimin's song)’

Her program is smooth, relaxed and carefree, as she can’t help but break into a smile at every move she makes despite previously imagining herself to remain dramatic and act to the words of the song, but her smile is bright and blinding, and she can only relish in how free she feels compared to what she endured in the last Olympics games.

“Triple flip, running edge,” the announcer says.

Jimin feels the music throughout her body, not focusing on perfection nor control, but simply feeling one with the ice and unshackled by expectations.

She dances on the ice, spinning and gliding with precision.

She turns her foot in preparation and executes a jump combination flawlessly.

“Triple lutz, triple loop combo!” The announcer beams.

She moves as smooth as the wind, but the strength that everyone recalls about her remains, along with the blazing fire in her striking gaze.

No mistakes occur and it’s like she never injured her ankle.

Her program ends and she smiles widely, relishing in the applause, and she immediately searches the stands for Minjeong, and she finds her, smiling right back at her.

Her points are satisfactory, placing her third and she can’t stop smiling.

Later, after changing and returning onto ground that wasn’t ice, she stood with excited, trembling hands as it was time for Minjeong’s short program.

“The underdog and rising star, Kim Winter, is now on the ice! She has swept multiple competitions in the past four years since the last Winter games, placing bronze and multiple silvers—” The announcer introduces Minjeong.

Minjeong focuses on her routine, feeling the nerves travel up her arms but she shakes them and takes centre position, taking a long and slow inhale before exhaling as the music begins to ring out.

‘Good looking by Suki Waterhouse (Minjeong's song)’

She moves like water, gliding on the ice and transitioning into spins and jumps without any pause between her glides across the cold icy floor.

She makes a turn and the announcer cheers. “Three and a half revolutions—what a beauty!”

She executes her jumps without worry, feeling the wind from the momentum whip in her hair and she grins, feeling her dancing moves that Joohyun spent hours ingraining in her body.

The crowd cheers as she makes daring moves and jump combos.

Quickly as it began, her short program ended and she glided off the ice with a smug and somehow modest smile as she sought out Jimin, who was waiting for her. She hurried over to Jimin and was scooped up in a tight hug that received many photographs but they simply didn’t care.

Afterwards, she received her points and her eyes widened as she broke into a megawatt smile, seeing how she broke a previous record of hers—placing her second for the short program.

After the short program and remaining to watch the other competitors, it is a slow evening for them as they return to the olympic village—stuffing themselves with food and later crashing in their bed, cuddled right up against each other.

🏅⛸️❄️

The following days in preparation for their free skate program day, Minjeong and Jimin spend hours in and out of the rink and in the present time, Minjeong finds herself lying on her back on the cold ice, staring up at the ceiling as she sighs deeply.

Jimin giggles, skating up to her side as she crouches down to poke her girlfriend’s nose.

“I did so well for practice yesterday,” Minjeong pouts. “Now that we’re so close to the games, I’m malfunctioning.”

“Love, don’t you think you’re just out of energy?” Jimin chuckles, caressing Minjeong’s red cheeks. “You’ve been at this for a while, and though I love seeing you in your element, you need to take a break. Just for today, at least.”

“Mm,” Minjeong looks up at Jimin and sees an angel.

“You haven’t taken me on that Milan date, either.” Jimin adds and Minjeong sits up.

“What time is it?” Minjeong’s eyes widened.

“Uh, five-forty.” Jimin answers after peeking at her wristwatch.

“Shit! Our reservation!” Minjeong hurries to get up and Jimin almost falls in the process.

“You made a reservation?” Jimin blinks, a warmth spreading in her body.

“Of course I did.” Minjeong makes a confused face before pulling on Jimin’s hand and dragging them to the exit. She looks over her shoulder and shouts at her team, “I’ve got to go now! I’m taking my girlfriend on a date!”

Jimin’s face lights aflame and she hurries to remove her skates.

The date Minjeong plans is top-notch. They have a nice dinner at a cosy hole-in-the-wall place and they indulge in wine, which has them both giggling and sharing gentle kisses. A few times they bump into people who recognise them and they take photos with pink cheeks as they hold their composure long enough to interact with fans.

Then they take a nightly stroll, sharing a ginormous cone of gelato and it drips everywhere, and Minjeong kisses Jimin to taste the ice cream, even though they bought one flavour in their shared cone.

Later, they both crash in their hotel room, letting the wonderful Milan night take them away.

Tomorrow will be their final event—the free skate.

🏅⛸️❄️

‘Take me to church by Hozier (Jimin's song)’

Jimin begins her free skate with a gentle glide on the ice.

She tightens her fluffy ponytail and smoothes out her flowing pale blue costume. As she begins her performance, she slides across the ice, and she turns into a spin.

She is languid on the ice and as the song begins to reach its climactic chorus, she moves across the ice and pivots as she jumps a triple lutz and turns into a double toe loop.

She gains speed, dancing across the ice as the lyrics bleed from her heart.

Going through her elements—on her triple loop she under-rotates it by a quarter and though it is slightly disappointing, she doesn’t let it deter her from completing her program.

Moving on the ice, she spins a layback into a needle, clutching onto her skate for dear life before lowering her leg and rounding the ice.

As the song moves to its bridge, she moves gently across the ice, throwing in a high butterfly jump, lowering herself in a broken spin.

The chorus hits again and she hits a triple axel, winning the favour of the crowd as she slows down her speed as the song comes to the end and her performance ceases.

She feels pride all throughout her body and hugs her team and refrains from kissing Minjeong since she has lipstick on, but she still hugs Minjeong as tight as she can.

Soon after, it’s Minjeong’s free-skate program and Jimin watches with bated breath.

‘Clocks by Coldplay (Minjeong's song)’

The music begins to play and Minjeong’s eyes glow under her sharp bangs.

Her piercings glint in the light and she smiles coldly.

She begins her routine, sliding across the ice as she gains speed.

She breezes through a triple lutz-double axel-double toe loop combination, executing all her elements without difficulty.

Minjeong beams toothily throughout her entire program, smiling through seven triples and four doubles.

She performs a scratch spin, then later a sit spin after a shotgun spin.

She spins and spins, gliding on the ice like a powerhouse and she feels incredible.

Saving the best for last during the song’s climax, she hits a triple axel as the song nears its end and the crowd erupts.

Her free skate routine is clean without negative grades and she takes off of the ice, taking a seat as she awaits her score.

The podium is later set up and Jimin takes bronze, which she cheers loudly about, waving it around her neck and clutching the mascot plushie to her chest. She looks over at Alysa Liu, who placed silver and they both jump with excitement with their hands clasped together.

Gold is announced and Minjeong feels her soul leave her for a moment, barely registering the moment she stood on the podium and received her prizes.

“Minjeong! Minjeong!” Jimin practically screams in Minjeong’s face, shaking her and placing a wet kiss on her cheek. “You did it!”

Minjeong bursts into tears, hugging Jimin tightly, unbalanced on the podium but she doesn’t let go of her girlfriend.

Even through press runs interviews, photograph sessions, and fan meetings, and kissing Jimin, Minjeong cries about her win so much that Seulgi debates changing her name from Winter to crybaby, but Joohyun teases her wife when Seulgi cries as well, seeing as the coach and athlete are no better than each other when choked up.

🏅⛸️❄️

A few days later, they attend the Olympic gala and both girls don’t tell each other what their routine was going to be despite how much they begged each other and used underhanded techniques to receive a hint.

In truth, the mystery surrounding each other’s performance was deserved, as Minjeong was successfully seduced when Jimin came onto the ice in a red dress with her hair in loose curls and had dark, alluring makeup on while performing to ‘Can't remember to forget you' by Shakira.

When it was Minjeong’s turn, Jimin felt herself black out when Minjeong came out in pants, a thin sparkly button-up with a loose necktie around her neck and she skated to ‘Telephone’ by Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

It’s safe to say their night together ended with great passion.
