Chapter Text

Harken instead sat down in front of Nectere.

“Do you know what pottery is, Harken?” Nectere clicked.

Harken nodded in response.

“Do you know how to make pottery? If not, I can show you if you’d like. It’s very soothing…” Nectere trailed off, reaching for a bundle of clay she had stashed in the corner of her little cave.

Harken scooted closer—obviously interested in what Nectere was going to do—as she had never seen someone make pottery. Of course, she’s seen pottery before, but she’s never seen the actual process of making it.

Nectere took the lump of clay and flattened it into a circle. She rolled the clay into long pieces, stacking the snake-like pieces on top of each other. She started gently smoothing the outside and inside of the pottery to make sure there were no lumps, gently rotating the vase in the process.

Finally, Nectere was done. It was a simple looking vase, but it looked very well made.

“So, after watching me, what do you think?” Nectere asked.

Harken paused for a moment.

“It looks…fun.” She clicked back.

If Nectere could smile, she would. Nectere carefully grabbed the vase and added it to her collection of pottery in the back of the cave.

Harken looked into the sky. She noticed the sun was about to set.

“Huh…I suppose you have to leave soon? Come try and visit me again, hm?” Nectere clicked.

Well…it’s not like Harken had a place to actually stay anyway. She was always on the move—going from one place to another—as an attempt to hide from bigger constructs before sunset.

“…Could I stay here? For the night, if you don’t mind…” Harken asked, turning back from the sky to face the other.

“Well of course! I don’t mind at all!” Nectere replied, taking Harken’s hand and leading her into the cave, covering the entrance with the bushes and leaves and such surrounding them.

Little did Harken know, she would be staying much longer than just a night. And that’s where their interesting “friendship” began. The two became inseparable—always hunting together—always had each other’s company. And over time, Harken had learned so much about pottery from Nectere that she started making her own. Of course it wasn't on the same level as the Nectere’s, but it was still very impressive… or at least Nectere thought it was.

Well, other than that… Harken had finally found someone else. Someone else that she felt safe around. When Nectere was near her, Harken didn’t feel fidgety, nervous, on edge like before—she felt calm. And that was something. Harken didn't know how to explain it, but she was thankful Nectere was there for her. Even more thankful for Nectere saving her when they first met.

-

Nectere and Harken were sitting on a high branch of a tree, overlooking a part of the forest they resided in. It had been a few weeks since they had first met.

Nectere was rambling on about some events that had happened before she had met Harken, but Harken wasn’t really paying any attention—instead staring off into the distance, looking below at the island. From this height, FableHaven looked very small.

It was peaceful up here. Quiet, other than the sound of Nectere’s clicking.

For once, she truly started enjoying life.

“Hey, Harken,” Nectere turned her head to look at the other construct.

Harken stopped looking at the sky and turned her head to face Nectere.

”I’ve been wondering…since I have been just ranting about my life…what was yours like? You know, before we met each other…” Nectere clicked.

Harken stopped to think.

Her life wasn’t really that eventful.

Well, she was the last of her kind of construct, maybe that was interesting enough to share? So she told Nectere.

”Ah, you know, a lot of constructs are ‘the last of their kind’, it’s kind of upsetting—to me anyway…” Nectere replied. “Most constructs die out anyway unfortunately.”

Well…never mind that.

“Well…i don’t have anything interesting enough to share…My apologies.” Harken replied.

”Oh, no, it’s fine! Your life does not have to be extremely interesting! Plus, being the last of your kind is sort of…hmmm…cool? Oh, that sounded so ignorant…” Nectere replied.

….
