Chapter Text
Pa,
Got your last letter with the standings. You're a damn lifesaver. These schmucks over here don't know from nothin' about gettin news fast. By the time they hear who won what game, I already cleaned 'em outa half their Luckys.
So keep it comin and make it quick like you been doin. News takes forever to get here as it is. Sometimes feels like I'm hearin' about games from last month. But you're faster than Western Union, I swear. You writin' the second the game's over or what? Either way, don't stop. I got a reputation to maintain around here and your son ain't losin' smokes to no damn idiots who think they know baseball.
Real glad to hear about Ruthie finally tyin' the knot. Her ma over the moon or what? I remember when she was runnin' around with that Catholic Italian kid. Carmine? Mario? One of them names. Mrs. Kleinman looked like she was gonna plotz every time she saw 'em together. Bet she don't even know if she's more relieved Ruthie didn't end up with a surprise in the oven or that she ain't gotta sit through no church wedding with all them Saints lookin' down at her. Either way, mazal tov to Ruthie. Tell her ma I says congratulations and she can breathe easy now.
How're the kids? Rachael still givin' everyone grief or did she finally calm down? And what about Morty? He still got that cough? Tell em Uncle Donny says they better be behavin themselves and helpin out around the house. And if they ain't, tell em I’ll smack em when I get back.
One more thing — you better tell Mrs. Schapiro I'm comin' back and she better not be lettin nobody else touch that hair of hers. I don't care if she's gettin' antsy. She been comin' to me since '37 and I ain't about to lose my best tippin customer to some hack who don't know a proper set from a hole in the ground. Say Donny says she better sit tight and wait for the real professional. That old biddy tries to get regular with anybody else and I'm gonna hear about it. She better not be gettin' any ideas.
I know what you said before but don't worry about me none, Pa. I'm doin' fine over here. Real safe, really. We ain't even seein much action these days. Mostly just sittin' around, playin' cards, shootin' the breeze. Borin' stuff. You know me, I can handle myself, so don't go losin' sleep. Just keep them game scores comin' fast. I’m countin on ya.
Donny
