CHAPTER 2 (ISSAC)
OCTOBER 1998
Kismet refers to destiny, fate, the idea that you always had a path to follow, a place to fill. At least that's how I feel, following in my dads footsteps going to a stuffy hundred year old school with a bunch of prissy rich kids.
Most of them are mindless bores, most except my older cousin. Tobias Hayward, his mother started a successful chain of gourmet restaurants while his father is a high ranking attorney, he's the only one with anything to say putting him and his friends at the top of the socialite food chain they live on air above all the rest, at least that's how they act, whether they truly believe it is a complicated question, a good question is whether they really want it. Because once you get above people it takes a lot to stay there.
I don't know whether I want it but regardless Tobias is keen on teaching me the ways of high society and such before he and his friends graduate. It's why I'm dragging myself out of bed into the nouveau coffee shop of the moment on a saturday morning.
"You know we don't have to wake up at the crack-ass of dawn to discuss the politics and proprieties of society." I say slouching in an abused armchair, creaking as the springs adjust it's probably older than me.
"It's 8am Issac, you're not a child anymore, you need to be better prepared if you want to survive in this world."
"I think I'll be able to survive and still sleep in." I say closing my tired eyes, the smell of $9.00 espresso and grinding gears of the machines overwhelms my senses.
"I think you need a reality check Boyer, you need to be ready to run at any moment," The startling sarcastic tone of Silas Hensley prises my eyes open.
Silas Hensley the king of West Ferrets and heir to one of the largest real estate companies in the country."You never know what's lurking or who, and besides sleeping in means you're not sleeping with anyone, and that's just not healthy or fun." He jokes sitting down on an crisp velvet couch next to Tobias.
"Yeah well not that I could find a girl to sleep in my bed when they're all in yours." I say mockingly the new playful conversation waking me up.
Just then the ornate bell above the door rings through the cafe along with the familiar clicking of overtly expensive heels. Angling my head toward the clacking I find Rachel Mullins sauntering towards us.
"Sup Rae," Tobias shoots at her, nodding his head in welcome.
"Hi Silas," she says, shrugging off Tobias previous welcome. "What are you boys doing today?" She asks, her sickly sweet tone healing any wound caused by her lack of response.
"Nothing much, just tutoring Boyer here in how to get girls." Silas jokes, shooting a cat-like grin in my direction.
"What about you Rae, what are you doing here so early?" I ask turning away from Silas judging gaze to meet Rachel's softer one.
"Oh, just waiting for Annie, she was meant to meet me here so we can go shopping." She states eyes darting around the coffee house trying to see if Anita would suddenly appear if she stared hard enough.
"You still hang out with that girl?" Silas says now, finally looking at Rachel,"why would you waste time with her, is she your newest charity case or something?" Tobias scoffs picking up his now tepid coffee.
"No she's my friend, and if you boys would actually talk to her and give the poor girl the time of day you would see she is very nice, pretty and smart, she does go to Rutherford anyway." Silas is the one to scoff this time, "All those Rutherford kids think they're better than us because they believe they're the next Einstein, all they do is study. It's pathetic."
Just as he finishes his words the bell rings again.
