Chapter Text

Alex sighed as they made their way up the stairs in Kara's apartment building. They hoped that this went better than the last sister night had gone. Alex sighed as they paused three flights up, their legs still aching from taking the kids at the shelter to a local soccer field. Those kids were surprisingly good. Alex pushed up off the wall and made their way up the last flight. Kara was standing in the open doorway grinning.

“Hey, sis!” Kara called out.

Alex barely managed to keep themselves from flinching. “Hey, Kar.”

“Come on!” Kara was bouncing up and down as Alex followed her into the apartment.

“What's got you so excited?"

“Nothing!”

Alex squinted at Kara. “I don't believe you.”

“Ok, ok. I'll tell you. But first food!”

Alex laughed as they put the grocer bag down on the counter and grabbed a plate from the cabinet. Kara had put several boxes of pizza, crab-ron-gon, potstickers, the makings of ice cream sundays, and a board of candy. It looked like a junk food buffet.

“What's in the bag?” Kara asked.

“Fruit and chips.” Alex replied, pulling the containers out of the bag.

Kara wrinkled her nose but shrugged. “Ok, whatever.”

“Hey, some of us actually have to eat healthy to survive."

Kara laughed as the two of them made their way to the couch. Alex glanced over at their sister. She was grinning and bouncing up and down on the couch. They were glad to see her so happy. For all of Kara's naiveness and faults, Alex truly did love Kara. If she was this happy, it was almost certainly a good thing.

"So, what's up?”

Kara grinned at her, “Eliza called me!”

Alex's heart plummeted. They forced their voice to stay even.

“Oh?”

“She's lecturing at Stanford next month and wants to visit us when she does! She's going to stay at my place and we're going to get to spend an entire day together! Just like when you were in college!”

“Th-thats great, Kara.”

“I know, right! Oh, you should invite Maggie to the family dinner. Eliza would love her!”

“Mm, maybe."

Eliza would definitely not like Maggie. Even if Eliza somehow didn’t realize that Maggie was gay - which was extremely unlikely - she would not be able to stand Alex making a friend of their own. She never had - part of the reason why Alex's friendships with Vicky and Josie had fallen apart. They sighed, tossing their head back against the couch.

“Do you know how long she's staying for?”

“August 2 through August 8th, I think.”

Alex barely managed to keep themself from groaning. That would be a long, long week. Although, maybe they could schedule a trip out of town with Adrian and Maggie for that week. They would just need an excuse to explain it to Kara, James, and Eliza - maybe work?

Notes:

Sorry, it's so short but this was giving me a lot of trouble and stopping me from writing so I decided to just post it as it is.

Comments are always welcome! Also, feel free to ask any questions - I don't know if I did a great job at explaining context to people outside of my head.
