... himself awake.
Manousos jerked awake on the forest floor, lashing upright in the darkness. He froze, listening. Only animals and insects in the dark. An unbroken darkness, a night so thick with mist that no stars were seen.
He was still in the Darién Gap. He was not in Albuquerque. He still had so far to go ...
It has only been a dream. He lay down and told himself that, over and over. It was only a dream.
Notes:
Carol Sturka would make an awesome evil mad scientist lady. Just saying.
I presume what she says (And Manousos is unable to translate on the fly) is something like "Excellent! An uninfected human for my experiments! Bring him to my laboratory." And the Joined obey, as they do.
