Appearance
Ray is a young man of average height with pale skin. He has layered medium-length wavy to curly hair that is predominantly black with violet dyed bangs that fall loosely at the front of his face. His eyes are a shade of dark brown that are often seen with either black smudged eyeshadow or a cleaner, purple eyeshadow. He also has a double helix piercing on his left ear and a vertical right eyebrow piercing.
He is usually seen with an indifferent expression.
Dorm Uniform
Ray's uniform is similar to the rest of Ignihyde students. The uniform consists of a black textured jacket, a bright blue half-vest, navy-blue pants, and black and blue boots.
The jacket is mainly black with blue underlining. All over the outside of the jacket is a unique, geometric texture, consisting of evenly-arranged triangles. This texture appears to have a metallic shine. The jacket has a large, bright blue collar, resembling that of an aviator jacket, with black lines near the trim. Also along the collar are black zippers that go underneath the jacket. While barely visible, Ray also wears a navy-blue, crew neck shirt under his jacket.
On the right side of his chest is a bright blue half-vest that goes over his right shoulder, and is connected by a blue belt around his torso. The belt has a black triangle pattern and a dark-blue snap buckle, with the long end hanging down to his waist. The half-vest itself has one cargo pocket, above which is a large white button with the symbol of Ignihyde on it.
Just above Ray's navy-blue pants is a blue padded belt, with a black belt strap and dark blue snap buckle. Hanging from the belt at both hips are blue, box-shaped pouches, with blue squares of fabric behind them, resembling the flaps on a tool belt. Worn over the navy-blue pants around his upper right thigh is a small blue belt with a black triangle pattern and dark-blue snap buckle. Both belts are connected by his black belt strap. Several long strips of fabric fall from the back of Ray’s belt and trail down to his ankles. The fabric’s outer sides are black, while the inner sides are bright blue.
The boots’ design resembles that of thick winter boots. They are mostly black, with bright blue tongues and heel counters. Over the tongues are four bright blue straps with black buckles, and the soles are white.
Personality
Ray is generally a reserved and sardonic individual. Unlike certain Ignihyde students who are socially anxious, he doesn't interact with others by choice as he is naturally introverted. However, he has no trouble striking up a conversation when needed, much to Cater's delight.
He is also a calculated risk-taker when it comes to decision making and fiercely disciplined due to his athletic background, expecting the same commitment from others.
Background
Ray grew up in a humble workshop in the Shaftlands that has been assembling blastcycles from scratch for generations. He picked up the talent for blastcycle engineering due to his upbring and his childhood curiosity of making all sorts of gizmos from any scraps he could find while playing outside, since he couldn't stand the pungent smell of his father's cigarettes as a heavy smoker. This led to him making his own rollerblades to ride in rinks whenever he's free.
During his early teenage years, he followed his mother's footsteps by participating in blastcycle racing tournaments using his first ever engineered blastcycle, winning as one of the Top 3 racers. Upon enrolling in Night Raven College, he was originally in the Spelldrive Club before being the founder of the Blastcycle Engineering Club during his third year.
Signature Spell
"Quit stalling and keep up. Break the Limit."
His signature spell, "Break the Limit", allows him to temporarily ignore the laws of friction and wind resistance on himself or a vehicle he is operating, achieving near-instantaneous velocity. In a sprint, he becomes a literal blur of violet and black.
However, the spell requires high-speed mental calculations to ensure he doesn't crash into solid objects. If he holds the spell for too long, his internal body temperature spikes.
Trivia
- His first name can mean "beam of light", describing the speed that he can achieve with his signature spell is akin to that of light, although never close. Meanwhile, his last name, Tabacchi, means "tobacco" in Italian, which is ironic given his disdain for the smell of cigarettes.
- Ray is based on Go Go Tomago, a major character of the Big Hero 6 franchise.
- He is almost always seen chewing sugar free bubblegum, with his favourite flavour being watermelon.
- He prefers black coffee as his caffeine intake instead of energy drinks because he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth.
- Since he spends long hours in the workshop, he opts to snack on beef jerky as prying away from work for a meal will cause him to lose his momentum.
- He is surprisingly patient when he wants to, and has a soft spot for freshmen such as Deuce, Jack and Epel for their respective reasons besides being the occasional tutor.
- He founded the Blastcycle Engineering Club shortly after Leona became president of the Spelldrive Club due to slacking off instead of handling his leadership role. Despite being the founder of the Blastcycle Engineering Club, he is technically the president, but finds the title troublesome and prefers to be called "head mechanic" instead.
- He is a clean freak and has one of the neatest working spaces and dorm room in Ignihyde.
