Static Minds

Chapter 3: After the silence

Notes:

Guys, I ended up spending 13 hours at the airport, urghhhh 😭 but anyways I got home safe!! had the nicest nap with my plushies, I swear they missed me… they just don’t wanna admit it but oh well 🤭
Also, I am lowkey panicking because I have NO idea what route I want this story to take anymore 😩 like I love me some soft fluffy 2MIN, but at the same time it feels like the story needs angst… tension… and maybe a bit of drama but I hate drama so now I’m just confused 🧍🏽‍♀️and if you have seen the movie I referenced, I love you.

please leave your comments if you have any ideas or what vibe you want because I am fighting for my life over here.
Thank you for reading 😌

Chapter Text

The silence didn't feel like peace; it felt like waiting.
The thought wasn’t his. It came uninvited, slipping through the edges of his awareness like water through a cracked window. Seungmin froze. Slowly and carefully, he turned his head toward the source.
Minho stood by the wall still, quiet, and unreadable, as always. Seungmin’s throat tightened. No one else reacted; no one else heard it. Minho hadn’t moved or spoken, but Seungmin had heard him anyway. It was clear, certain, and real.
He swallowed hard. This wasn’t a mistake anymore. It couldn't be.
The door opened again before he could think any further. Chan stepped in first, scanning the room instantly, as if he were measuring stability rather than space.
"Visiting hours are ending soon," Chan said gently. Then, more softly, he looked at Seungmin. "You okay?"
Seungmin nodded too quickly. "I’m fine."
Chan didn’t believe him; he never did when it mattered. Behind him, the others had already begun gathering their things. It was a blur of chaotic movement and overlapping voices a forced normality pressing against the strange stillness Seungmin was trapped in.
Changbin was still arguing that lightning statistics should be illegal. Han was laughing too loudly at something no one had said. Felix stayed close to the bed but didn’t touch anything, looking as though he were afraid Seungmin might break if handled wrong. Hyunjin watched him too closely, while I.N. lingered at the edge of the group, unsure of where to put his worry.
Seungmin barely heard any of them. Underneath the noise, there it was again: faint, unstable, and slipping through like static.
“He looks too quiet.”
“Is he really okay?”
“Maybe we should stay…”
Seungmin flinched. Chan noticed immediately.
"Alright," Chan said firmly, stepping in. "Everyone out. Let him rest."
There were complaints, of course. Han protested, Changbin argued, and Felix hesitated. But they listened; they always did. One by one, they filed out until the room thinned. Only two remained: Chan and Minho.
Chan glanced between them. "I’ll be outside," he said after a pause, then he left.
The door clicked shut. Suddenly, the world narrowed.
Seungmin didn't look up. He couldn’t. If he did, he wasn't sure what he’d hear next. He heard footsteps, slow and deliberate. Minho moved closer, stopping beside the bed. He was close enough that Seungmin could feel it again that strange pressure under his skin, like something beneath the surface trying to push through.
Seungmin’s hands tightened. Don't. Don’t listen.
"Hey." Minho’s voice was quiet and careful.
Seungmin forced himself to look up. Their eyes met. Nothing happened at first no voices, no intrusion. Just Minho: present and real. Seungmin almost believed it.
"You look like you're about to pass out again," Minho said.
"...Thanks."
A faint pause followed.
"You scared everyone," Minho added.
"I didn't mean to."
"I know."
Silence settled between them again, but it wasn't empty. It was full of everything neither of them was saying. Seungmin felt it building the edge of something he didn’t want to understand.
And then it came. Not loud, not dramatic, but simply... there.
“...I love you.”
Seungmin’s breath stopped. His entire body went still. The world didn't crash or explode; it just shifted. It was as if something irreversible had finally been acknowledged.
Minho didn't move. He didn’t change his expression or even blink, but there was such an intensity behind his eyes. But Seungmin had heard it. That was the problem now: he couldn’t un-hear it.
He looked away first, too fast and too obvious. Minho watched him for a moment longer before saying quietly, "Get some rest."
Seungmin nodded but didn't answer. His voice didn't feel like it belonged to him anymore.
The door closed behind Minho, leaving Seungmin alone with something he didn't have words for—not yet.
But it was there. Still echoing, still real, still waiting.
Seungmin sat motionless in the hospital bed long after everyone had left, his fingers curled loosely into the sheets as if letting go might make something worse happen. The room was quieter now. Cleaner. Normal, at last.
But his mind wasn't.
Silence had started to mean something else entirely, and he didn’t know how to turn it off. He stared at the closed door, then at his hands, then at nothing.
I heard it.
------------------------------
Sleep didn’t come.
It tried briefly, in uneven waves of exhaustion, but every time Seungmin closed his eyes, the same thing returned.
“...I love you.”
It wasn't a memory, nor was it his imagination. It was something too clear to doubt. He lay still in the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling as if it might explain itself if he looked long enough. It didn’t. Nothing did.
The room was dark now, save for the soft glow of the monitor beside him. Everything else had been reduced to quiet shapes and faint shadows. Seungmin exhaled slowly.
"Okay," he whispered into the empty room. "This is not happening."
No response. Of course not. He lifted a hand slightly, staring at his fingers as if they belonged to someone else.
"Hallucination," he muttered. "Head injury. Stress. A medical explanation."
Still nothing. The silence felt heavier now, as if it were waiting for him to admit the truth. Seungmin frowned.
"No," he said more firmly. "I didn't hear anything."
But even as he said it, his mind betrayed him. He had heard it not imagined, not guessed. He had felt the words land inside him like a weight that refused to move.
A knock interrupted his thoughts. Seungmin tensed. The door opened slowly, and Chan stepped in. He was careful and quiet, as if he didn't want to disturb something fragile.
"You're still awake," Chan observed.
Seungmin nodded once. "Couldn't sleep."
Chan didn't question it. He simply pulled a chair closer and sat down. For a moment, neither of them spoke.
"You've been quiet," Chan said gently.
Seungmin let out a short breath. "I'm tired."
"That's not what I meant."
Silence. Seungmin looked down at his hands. Chan watched him carefully not pushing, just waiting. That was worse. Chan always noticed when something was wrong, and Seungmin had never been good at hiding from him.
"I’m fine," Seungmin said automatically.
Chan gave him a look. Seungmin stopped.
"...Okay," he corrected softly. "I'm not fine."
Chan nodded once, as if that were enough. "That’s better. What’s wrong? Do you need the doctor? Is it worse than you are letting on?"
Seungmin shook his head before giving a verbal, "No, it's not that."
"Talk to hyung," Chan said.
After another pause, Seungmin’s voice came out quieter than he intended. "Have you ever heard something you weren't supposed to hear?"
Chan didn’t answer immediately, which made Seungmin’s chest tighten.
"Depends," Chan said finally. Seungmin glanced up; Chan was watching him now, his focus sharpening. "On what you heard."
The answer didn't help; it made everything feel more precarious. Seungmin swallowed hard.
"I think... I’m hearing things," he admitted carefully. "Like thoughts. Not spoken. Just—" He hesitated. Chan didn't interrupt. "People’s minds."
The silence lasted longer this time. Chan didn’t laugh, and he didn’t dismiss it. His eyes grew wide as he processed what he heard.
“Wait, how long has this been happening?” He paused. “No, don’t answer that yet. Are you okay?”
“That’s your first question?”
“Of course it is. Are you okay? Is that why you were acting weird when everyone was here? You could hear all our thoughts?”
Seungmin hesitated, then gave a small nod. "It got too loud and overwhelming."
"Oh. Was this before or after the accident?" Chan asked.
"After. Have you told anyone else—the doctor or nurse?"
Seungmin shook his head. "It still feels unreal, like a movie."
"Like that movie we saw a few months ago, The Age of Adaline?" Chan responded.
"Except I hear everyone’s thoughts rather than my looks remaining the same," Seungmin said.
