Summary:

The second part everyone has been asking for

Notes:

I felt it'd be appropriate to post this on the last day of april, since the OG chapter was an april fools prank.

Please lmk if this has any mistakes or inconsistencies. I'm like half-asleep right now and just trying to get this posted lol since I procrastinated until the last minute. I'll probably edit some stuff tmr.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Doggy fell asleep somewhere around 3 A.M. He woke up groggily and did his morning routine as usual when he got a text from Poley. However, when he’d gone to check it, he realized he had missed a text sent at 4:21 A.M. from Player.

‘Sorry, this is such a late response,’ It reads, ‘and you’re asleep, but I found the answer to your question from last night. I do want to go out with you.’

The smile on Doggy’s face grows so quickly that his cheeks hurt. He lets out a breathless laugh. He lets his tail wag the entire time he’s finishing his routine. When he gets to the station, he uses all the strength in his body to keep up his usual collected appearance. He sees Player’s empty desk, which is odd because they’re almost always the first one in the office. Poley taps him on the shoulder, putting a cup of coffee down on his desk.

“Yo,” Poley greets him, “Player told me to get you your liquid hell since they aren’t here today to. Pretty gay you guys memorized each other's coffee styles. ”

“Do you know where they are?” Doggy asks, rolling his eyes at his friend’s comment.

“They got called to a crime scene investigation,” Poley tells him. “The second they got here, so they haven’t been at the station for a while now.”

“Do you know when they’ll be back?”

Poley shakes his head, pulling the nearest chair over to sit beside Doggy. “I have half an hour before I gotta go on patrol, and fill out some boring reports…so tell me some not so boring stuff. What happened with you and Player?” he grins.

Doggy’s cheeks grow hot, and he rolls his eyes, seeing Poley’s expression. He sighs as he explains the events of last night, up until this morning, when he’d gotten that text.

“Congrats, dude.” Poley affectionately shoves his shoulder. “I knew you could do it, AND I knew it’d end well. For all of us.”

“All of us?” Doggy questions.

“ALL of us!” Poley grins, leans back in his chair, arms crossing. “Now, I can be a third wheel and bug the shit out of you guys.” he pauses, his grin turning into a softer smile. “But seriously, I’m happy for you, D. When’s the date?”

“Friday,” Doggy beams. “I gotta figure out what we’re going to do, though.”

“Then let me help you brainstorm.”

. . .

Player crouches under the police tape as they walk away from the crime scene, meeting with the two junior detectives they’d be instructed to help train at the parked cop cars. They’re reluctantly handed the reports from each, and they feel their irritation simmer. The entire morning had just been the two acting as if they knew better than their superior. They hate how people at the station love to disrespect them because they aren’t like everyone else, neither a girl nor a boy.

They toss themself into the car, taking their own report and comparing it to the junior detectives’. As they suspected, many mistakes and unreported details. If they weren’t as asinine as the juniors, they’d flaunt their skill in their faces. However, they simply exit the car, handing each detective their report without a word. They carefully retreat to a secluded alleyway, double-checking to make sure no one has seen them. The other officers will just assume they’re on break.

They sigh, retrieving the cigarette pack from their inner pocket and their lighter from the other. They grab one from the pack, and once lit, they close their eyes and savour the first inhale. They haven’t had the time to thoroughly enjoy a smoke in a while. They grab their phone, and a smile breaks on their face as they see a few texts from Doggy, cheeks growing warm. Last night, they felt truly abashed when they’d asked for some time to think. They’d been up working all night, and yet, while they usually get so transfixed with their work, they were distracted by their best friend’s confession replaying in their head on loop.

During the small breaks they’d take between writing reports or analyzing documents, all they could focus on was how to answer Doggy. It sent them into such a spiral that they’d even stopped mid-report, instead focusing on finding an answer. Not only is he their best friend, but he’s also always been the one there to support and love them unconditionally when no one else would. Then, they began to recall everything that could have been flirting they’d hadn’t caught onto. They quickly realized that the way their cheeks would burn, or the odd giddy feeling that would overtake them, wasn’t just due to being socially awkward. For being someone so incredibly good at reading people, they’d begun to understand that relationships turn them rather dumb. It's not uncommon for that to happen to people. Eventually, nearly half asleep, they’d realized they’d want to accept his date invitation. It’s what would satisfy their heart. Unfortunately, they don’t tend to be emotional without their logical side wanting immediate control. So, they’d sprung awake, thinking of all the cons that could come with pursuing a relationship with Doggy, and thinking of how to avoid said cons.

Thankfully, after enough overthinking, their exhaustion began to take hold for a final time after they’d been satisfied to figure out solutions for each con. So, they’d sent him a simple text that’d communicate a clear yes. Then, they were completely knocked out until their agitating phone alarm woke them up. They’d gotten ready for the day, taking extra caution to make sure they’d look nice for when they’d see Doggy at the station. They’d always wanted to be presentable at work, but never for a specific person…

When they’d gotten to work, they’d had the chance to make some small talk with Poley, and they nearly instantly knew Poley knew about last night. However, they couldn’t dwell on it too much as they’d been called to a crime scene. They smile softly as they open Doggy’s texts.

They’re so excited for Friday.
