Chapter Text
None of their newfound communication mattered. There were two issues. First off, they had reputations to uphold. They couldn’t just become friends again. Most people knew them as enemies, or that they hated each other. Number two, there was so much tension between them, they couldn’t necessarily become friends again. Or not as close as they once were.
Forty-one years old, and they both lived with the same regret.
Nico couldn’t come back to Formula 1, the cars were too different and the amount of training he’d need isn’t worth it. That’s one of the many regrets he lives with. Also not marrying Lewis.
Lewis also hated it, him and Nico were supposed to win multiple WDC’s and Constructers. They barely won one.
They both knew that whatever they tried to do, it wouldn’t be the same. Young Nico and Lewis are the past. They cannot change the past. That’s what’s hard.
Now they’re grown men, and everyday, every therapy session, every race, every second Lewis wishes he could’ve changed something. But his dreams are just dreams, and maybe in another life there would be another outcome. There won’t.
Everyday Nico misses Lewis. Nico hates his life and wishes one with Lewis instead. But you can’t always get what you want. This is why Nico cries himself to sleep every night, because he knows he can’t change a single thing. He blames himself for everything that happened between him and Lewis. And Lewis blames himself for everything that happened between him and Nico.
If something were to change, it needs to happen now. Before Lewis loses another race, and before he retires. They need this.
But more importantly, they need each other.
