Chapter Text
Beep beep beep!
Zelda cracked her eyes open and flung her arm out to silence her phone. She groaned and sat up, rubbing at her eyes.
Ugh, right. School is a thing.
She climbed out of her warm bed into the cold air and shivered, but she had to get up now or she wouldn't be able to. She stumbled out of her room, starting to undo her braid.
Why was she so tired?
She stepped into the living room and stopped. Right. The time travelers.
The memories came rushing back. Having them nearly dropped on her, bringing them back to her apartment, and the chaos that was dinner.
She was up late trying to figure out where they were sleeping, but most of them were just on the floor anyways.
But now she had a new problem.
She had classes today, and it probably wouldn't be a good idea to leave nine time travelers who know nothing of modern tech and were probably way too curious for their one good alone. For hours.
Yeah. That's definitely not happening.
Probably.
What classes did she even have today?
She carefully stepped around a couple of the time travelers, Four and Sky, she was pretty sure, and grabbed her laptop before retreating to the kitchen to make some coffee. She started a pot before opening her laptop and pulled up the google calendar.
Ok, so let's see...that class... and that class everything's just online, and that class is useless and easy (but unfortunately required), and that class has a bunch of friends in it. Hopefully at least some of them go today, or they're all screwed. Yeah, she can skip today. Her friends might ask questions but that's a later Zelda problem.
She looked up at the sound of footsteps, and Wild (that's his name right?) padded into the kitchen. "What're you doing?" he asked, coming up to Zelda.
"Making coffee and seeing what classes I have today." she answered.
"Coffee?"
"Uh, it's a drink people use to help wake up." When was coffee discovered? Cultivated? Whatever. Maybe like, the imperial age? So like the 1600s?
"Oh you have coffee!" a voice said. Zelda startled from her thoughts, as ... Warriors? (Scarf man? ... Pretty sure that was Warriors) walked in. Oh wait.He knows coffee. Maybe he's from the 1600s? But wait wouldn't they all know it? Are they not even from the same time? Did they say they were?
...
Know what? Not even gonna worry about that.
"Oh, coffee! Maybe we should give some of that to Sky." And that was Twilight. Probably. Names are hard, ok!
"Hey is it okay if I use your kitchen?" Wild asked.
Zelda froze. "Why...?"
"Breakfast!"
"Oh, right. But I'm staying here to help, got it?"
"But I don't need help cooking!"
"In this kitchen, with this tech, yes, you do. Unless you already forgot about Wind's incident last night?"
"Heeeey." A voice aka Wind whined. Wind was easier to remember than the others for whatever reason.
"So yeah. Until you know how to use this tech safely, supervision. Got it?"
"Okaay." WIld pouted.
"Great. Now, what were you thinking of making?"
"Um, I was thinking of crepes with honey and wildberries?"
"Ooh, that does sound good." Warriors said, leaning on the counter. "Might help wake up the others with the sugar too."
"Um, what are wildberries?" Zelda asked. That could be a number of different fruits.
"Oh, um, here, they're these." Wild said, and with a flash of blue light, some small redish pinkish berries were in his hand.
"Huh." Zelda said, studying them. "They kind of look like raspberries. May I?" she asked, gesturing to the berries.
He replied by holding his hand out to her, and she scooped a couple up before popping them in her mouth. Maybe she should have washed them first, but oh well. A sweet and tangy juice burst from the berries as she chewed.
Yep, those were definitely raspberries, even if they tasted closer to the wild variety rather than the one found at the store (which makes sense). She swallowed and nodded, "Yup, those are definitely raspberries. It's kind of cool how even though they have different names, the fruit is pretty much the same and we both have it, ya know?"
Wild smiled, "Yeah it is cool." He started getting ingredients out of the blue magic thing on his hip. "Should we get started?"
"Yeah sure." she said, pulling out a mixing bowl from the cupboards. "But you're telling me what that is and how it works."
"Ok, so this is the Sheikah Slate. It's ancient Sheikahn technology, and it can do a lot of things." he said, adding some flour...? It looked a bit coarser than what she was used to though.
"Oh yeah? What kind of things?" she asked, handing him a whisk (to which he gave her a confused look, and she mimed mixing).
"It's got a map, near infinite storage," (What) "warping," (Huh!?) "and then the runes, which are magnesis, cryonis, stasis, and remote bombs."
Ok.
Um what. That's technology?
"Yeah no that's definitely not technology, that's magic."
Wild gave her an exasperated look. "It's not magic."
"Oh yeah? What's magic then?"
"Uh... well, what's technology?"
"Ooh, throwing my words back at me I see." she said smirking (this back and forth was kind of fun). "But fine, tec--"
"Oh, uh sorry." Wild said, looking away. She stopped.
"No, it's fine, I just thought--wait is that milk safe." Wild had just pulled a bottle of milk from his Slate.
"...Yes? What do you mean, why wouldn't it be?"
"Here, can I see for a sec?" she asked, reaching for the bottle. He handed it off, and she felt that it was room temperature. "It's not even a little cold."
"Yeah? Why would it be. Is it supposed to be?"
She narrowed her eyes slightly as she thought. If they were from the past, they probably hadn't discovered or figured pasteurized milk. So this was probably raw milk. If they've had it their whole lives, it was probably fine for them, but not for her.
"...No, I don't think this kind needs to be. But it's likely raw milk, it wouldn't be safe for me to have. Though I don't know if my milk would be okay for you guys, so I'll just make something for myself and you can continue making that." she finished, handing the milk back.
"Wait, what? Why?" another voice asked from the living room. Wind.
She glanced up over the peninsula counter thing to the living room, where the boys were now all awake (well, mostly awake) and listening to her and Wild talk. Oops.
"Well, like I said, this is raw milk. That means nothing's been done to it, and it also doesn't have to be kept cold. Since you guys have been having that for your whole lives, it's ok for you guys to have it. But, in this time, most people, including me, drink pasteurized milk, which means that it's been treated to kill bacteria and other stuff, I'm pretty sure. I've never had raw milk before, so, if I was to drink it or have it or whatever, since I'm not used to it and it hasn't been treated at all or anything, I'd probably get pretty sick."
"Oh." Wind said.
"Yeah. It's fine though, I'll just have cereal or something."
"Would you want to try our, uh, raw milk?" Twilight asked.
Zelda scoffed softly. "Yeah, no, that's definitely not happening. No offense, but raw milk just doesn't seem...good to me."
There was a short, awkward silence as she and Wild finished making the batter, before Warriors asked, "You said earlier you were looking at what classes you have today? When are you going to them?"
Wind lit up. "Ooh, can we come?"
"Nope, I'm skipping, and you wouldn't be able to come anyways, sorry Wind." she replied, "Wild, can we use one of my pans to cook them?"
He nodded and she pulled one out as Warriors asked, "You're skipping your classes today?"
"Yup, don't really think it's a good idea to leave you guys alone while you're still so unfamiliar with the tech and such," she answered.
There was an awkward silence as she and Wild finished making breakfast, and Wild called out, “Breakfast is ready!”
Zelda pulled a bunch of plates from the cupboard and set them on the counter as the boys started filing in. She blinked at the dirty and very old fashioned clothes. “Oh, uh, do you guys have other clothes?”
“We all have some, but they’re all dirty and whatever.” Wind said, grabbing a plate, “Thanks for making breakfast you two!”
“Mostly just Wild, but no problem.”
More of the boys started grabbing plates and food, and Zelda hummed. “How would you guys feel about some clothes from this time period?”
“Ooh, that would be cool!” WIld said, lighting up
“Yeah, I want to!” Wind added.
“Oh, you don’t have to, we can wash these... is there somewhere we can wash our clothes?” Time said.
“Yeah the laundry room’s down on ground floor, but also if we go out you guys can get more used to like the norms and rules and whatever of this time.” Zelda replied, grabbing a bowl and some cereal.
“I think we should do it! C’mon Time, please? It could be fun!” Wind begged.
Time glanced at Zelda. “Oh, alright. As long as it’s fine with you, Zelda?”
She smiled at him. “Wouldn’t have asked if it wasn’t alright.”
“Yay!” Wind shouted.
The boys gathered around her tiny table, eating and chatting, and Zelda opened a new tab on her laptop.
Wow, that was such an impulse comment. I haven’t thought through this at all! Zelda took a bite of cereal. Oh well. Let’s see, need to figure out where we’re going, and how we’re getting there.
Zelda searched up thrift stores and bus and subway routes they could use to get there, leisurely munching on her cereal.
“What’re you doing?”
Zelda’s head snapped to the side to see Hyrule standing there, looking at her curiously. “Oh, I’m just trying to figure out logistics and whatnot.”
“Oh. Um, do you want help?” he asked.
Zelda smiled at him. “No, I think I’ve got it. Thanks though.”
Wind ran up to them. “When are we going?”
“As soon as everyone’s ready,” she replied.
“C’mon, let’s get them to hurry up!” Wind said, pulling Hyrule behind him.
Hyrule laughed with a bell like chime. Zelda absentmindedly listned to the boys talking as she bought subway tickets for everyone.
Well, this was going to be interesting. Hopefully they’re not too chaotic on the subway. Then again, this is New York. There are weird people on the subway everyday.
“Zelda! We’re ready to go!” Wind called.
Her head shot up, and indeed, the boys were pulling their boots on and clustering near the door.
“Wait, I’m not!” Zelda shouted, springing up. “Just give me like five minutes, and don’t have on any weapons or armor on you please and thank you!” She said as she ran to her room.
“No armor?!” A voice shouted back. Zelda couldn’t tell who it was from her room.
“Yeah you don’t need it! Or weapons! Just don’t have them on!” She shouted back, pulling on her clothes.
“But what about monsters!” A different voice yelled.
“What?”
“Monsters!”
“Uh, those don’t exist! You’ll be fine!” Zelda grabbed her brush and started brushing her hair out.
“What do you mean they don’t exist!”
“I mean they don’t exist! They’re not real!” She put some clips into her hair and started doing a speed minimal makeup look. Concealer, blush, mascara, lip gloss, and good enough! She grabbed a purse, shoving her wallet, phone, and keys (habit, and just in case) into it, before speed walking down the hall. “K, we all ready to go?” There wasn’t an answer from the stunned looking boys, but they didn’t have armor or weapons on, so Zelda just continued on. “Great, let’s go, try to stay with me and don’t get lost.” Zelda strode out the door.
Let’s see how this goes. Hopefully not too chaotic.
