Chapter Text
Hell would never recover from this.
That was the first coherent thought Charlie managed to have as the courtroom dissolved into absolute uproar around her.
The King of Hell was engaged to the Radio Demon.
Lucifer had loved Adam.
Heaven lied.
And somehow the most terrifying part of all—
Alastor now carried pieces of Lucifer’s power.
The noise became unbearable.
Overlords argued loudly across rows of seats.
Demons shouted theories over one another.
The Goetia looked deeply disturbed.
Even the Archangels had lost composure.
Michael stared at Alastor like he was a loaded weapon someone had handed to a toddler.
Honestly?
Fair.
Alastor seemed delighted by the chaos.
Lucifer did not.
He sat rigid beside Belphegor now, one gloved hand pressed hard against his temple while the Sin of Sloth quietly murmured something calming under her breath.
Alastor’s smile dimmed slightly as he looked toward him.
Protective again.
Charlie noticed.
That hurt.
Because she couldn’t remember the last time she had looked at her father that carefully.
Satan slammed one burning hand onto the courtroom platform.
“ORDER.”
The entire chamber shook violently.
Magma surged below the grated floors.
Silence returned almost instantly.
Lucifer exhaled shakily.
Alastor rested a hand briefly against the back of his chair.
Grounding.
Again.
Charlie’s chest twisted painfully.
Satan’s eyes swept across the courtroom.
“The engagement is not the focus of this trial.”
Mammon snorted loudly.
“It kinda became the focus.”
“As entertaining as this undoubtedly is,” Satan continued sharply, ignoring him, “the central issue remains Hell’s stability.”
Michael finally tore his gaze away from Alastor.
“You empowered a sinner with royal authority.”
Lucifer looked exhausted.
“I empowered someone capable of protecting me.”
“You could have chosen one of the Sins.”
“I did not want one of the Sins.”
That answer surprised everyone.
Even the Sins.
Lucifer looked away bitterly.
“I needed someone outside the system.”
Belphegor’s expression softened sadly.
Because she understood immediately.
Lucifer hadn’t wanted protection born from obligation.
He wanted someone who chose him freely.
Alastor had.
For reasons no one fully understood.
Charlie found her voice shakily.
“…Why?”
The entire courtroom turned toward her.
Charlie stared at Lucifer desperately.
“Why him?”
Lucifer looked at her for a long moment.
Then laughed softly.
Not mockingly.
Just tired.
“Because he never once asked me to apologize for surviving.”
The words hit like knives.
Charlie flinched visibly.
And suddenly memories flooded back violently.
Her frustration with him.
Her disappointment.
Her anger whenever he avoided redemption discussions.
All those moments where she’d implicitly demanded he become smaller, softer, easier—
More acceptable.
Meanwhile Alastor—
Alastor accepted Lucifer exactly as he was.
Monstrous parts included.
The realization made Charlie feel sick.
Vaggie stepped forward sharply.
“He’s manipulating you.”
Alastor gasped theatrically.
“My dear, if I were manipulating him, I’d have convinced him to buy me an island by now.”
“That’s not funny.”
“It was a little funny.”
Lucifer actually snorted.
Tiny.
Brief.
But real.
The courtroom froze.
Because that was the first genuine sound of amusement anyone had heard from him all trial.
Alastor noticed too.
And for one fleeting second, something soft flickered beneath all those sharp teeth.
Oh.
Oh that was real.
Rosie looked positively delighted now.
Valentino looked deeply uncomfortable.
Carmilla looked like she was recalculating the political structure of Hell in real time.
Michael stepped forward again.
“This arrangement is reckless.”
Lucifer’s expression chilled instantly.
“So was sending Adam into exterminations.”
The courtroom went dead silent again.
Michael stopped moving.
God closed His eyes briefly.
And suddenly everyone understood something horrifying:
Lucifer blamed Heaven for Adam’s death.
Not abstractly.
Personally.
Deeply.
Violently.
Emily looked devastated.
“You didn’t know?” Lucifer asked her quietly.
She shook her head weakly.
“No…”
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“Of course you didn’t.”
Sera looked cornered now.
For the first time since arriving in Hell, she seemed genuinely uncertain.
Because Heaven’s lies were unraveling publicly.
And worse—
God Himself wasn’t stopping it.
Charlie stared at Lucifer.
Then slowly—
“…Did Adam love you too?”
The question shattered the room’s tension instantly into something far more painful.
Lucifer froze.
Completely.
Even Alastor looked startled.
God’s expression became openly grief-stricken.
And suddenly Charlie realized—
Nobody had asked that before.
Not once.
Lucifer looked down at his hands silently.
Then laughed quietly.
Broken.
“I think,” he whispered, “that he tried very hard not to.”
The ache in those words nearly destroyed the courtroom.
Charlie felt tears rise again immediately.
Lucifer kept speaking anyway.
“Heaven adored him. Humanity adored him. He was everything they wanted.” His voice softened dangerously. “And then there was me.”
God looked away.
Michael’s jaw tightened.
Lucifer smiled faintly.
“He used to call me beautiful like it offended him personally.”
Several demons blinked.
Mammon muttered a quiet “that tracks honestly.”
Alastor’s grin sharpened instantly.
“Oh, now that is fascinating.”
Lucifer shot him a tired glare.
“Don’t start.”
“You had a type even then.”
“I will revoke your tongue.”
“Promises, promises.”
Charlie stared numbly at them.
They bickered naturally.
Comfortably.
Like this wasn’t new.
Like Alastor had already seen all the ugly parts of Lucifer and stayed anyway.
The realization hurt more than she expected.
Because Charlie suddenly understood something awful:
Alastor knew her father better than she did now.
Satan interrupted before emotions could derail further.
“The issue remains security.”
Right.
Hell was still in danger.
The courtroom shifted uneasily.
Satan’s eyes narrowed toward the Overlords now.
“Lucifer’s vulnerability cannot become public knowledge beyond this chamber.”
Too late.
Everyone knew that.
The tension sharpened instantly.
Because Hell was built on power.
And weakness invited predators.
Alastor’s smile widened slowly.
Dangerously.
“Anyone attempting to exploit Lucifer’s condition,” he said pleasantly, “will answer to me.”
The room went cold.
Not because of the threat.
Because everyone believed him.
Vox visibly swallowed.
Valentino looked ready to leave the Ring permanently.
Even Carmilla looked wary now.
Michael’s gaze hardened further.
“You attached yourself to a creature like this willingly?”
Lucifer looked genuinely offended.
“Attached?”
Alastor placed one hand dramatically over his chest.
“My dear, how scandalous.”
Then Lucifer smiled.
Actually smiled.
Sharp and tired and small—
But real.
“Yes,” he said quietly.
“I did.”
