Chapter Text
You wake up at 10:00 a.m. to an alarm you set last night right before you fell asleep, anxiously thinking of what you could possibly say to make Joan forgive you.
You get up out of bed and do the usual getting ready routine, wash your face, put on makeup, and get on your favorite outfit. A white tank top you got from Hollister with Joan, and a black lace miniskirt JFK bought you when you guys were dating.
Before you know it, it’s 12:15 and JFK is picking you up to take you to the Grassy Knoll, where you can hopefully patch things up with the hottest girl you’ve ever seen— who also hates you…
The ride on the way there is mostly quiet, except for the Bing Crosby CD lightly playing on his car stereo in the background. You could tell that JFK felt something was up, even though you haven’t told him about your feelings for Joan yet.
“Are you feeling alright?” he says as the car slows down at a red light. “I know you haven’t talked to Joan in a while, but I’m pretty certain she wants to mend things with you.”
“How are you so sure of that?” You ask. Based on your minute and a half-long call last night, that doesn’t seem very likely.
“Listen, she really misses hanging out with you.” “She was talking to me the other day, and she may still think you were fooling around with her boyfriend, but she really wants to talk to you,” JFK said, his eyes still fixed on the road.
A couple more moments of silence passed before you decided that you needed to tell someone about Joan, about how you’ve just discovered you actually feel about her.
“JFK, can I tell you something?” “Something I’ve never told anyone? It’s about me.”
He took a couple of seconds to look away from the road and at you, with a worried look on his face. He quickly responded,
“Of course, Cleo. You can tell me anything.” He looked back at the road, but still showed a look of concern on his face, waiting for you.
“I-i-i think I’m bisexual. I’ve only known this about myself for a short while, and I’ve been crushing on Joan, and I really need her to not hate me because it’s ripping me apart, and….”
After all of that spilled out of your mouth, all you could do was look at the floor of the car and hope JFK didn’t think you were a total freak.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay, Cleo,” He quickly pulled over the car to comfort you. “I’m pretty sure Joan knows that you wouldn’t betray her like that. I think she just fell so hard over Abe that she couldn’t possibly see him doing that to you. But they broke up, and I think she finally realized that he was the kind of guy who would totally do that.”
You see JFK pause and look around for a short moment. “I think that from the start, she knew it wasn’t your fault, she was just so blinded because she had been wanting to be with Abe for so long.
“O-Okay,” You said, your voice still shaky from all of the fear and anxiety you were feeling right now. “But what about the bisexual part? Do you think she’d…” You trailed off. This was the first time you’d even confronted your feelings out loud, let alone told someone else.
“I think you guys would make a great couple. Just ask her out.”
“But what if she says no?” That was the last thing you wanted. To be stuck as friends was fine compared to asking her out and being rejected. If she didn’t feel the same way, you were sure she’d permanently see you differently, see you as the stupid gay freak that had a crush on her best friend.
“Trust me, she won’t.” JFK turned to you and winked.
You weren’t entirely sure you believed him, but his words helped motivate you either way.
As he got back on the road, the only thing you could think to yourself was,
“I’m going to ask out Joan.”
