Chapter Text
It has been a few weeks since the kiss and since their relationship started, the two caterpillars have been meeting each other daily. Grant has memorized Penelope’s coffee order by heart and they code together at least once a week. As the weeks went by and their relationship grew, so did their love for each other.
Penelope is sitting in the living room while Anna is doing school assignments next to her. There is a comfortable silence between the two ladies. Anna looks up from her work and sees Penelope texting someone and a smirk falls on her face.
“Texting Grant again?” Anna says with a smirk.
This startles Penelope and she accidentally throws her phone in the air and it falls on the floor. She gives a playful glare at Anna.
“Like you are any better, don’t think I haven’t noticed the fact you are hiding that phone over there” Penelope says and points towards a table lamp.
Anna looks at the lamp and then at Penelope. She sighs and Penelope picks up her phone and frowns.
“What's up?” Anna asks and leans closer to where Penelope is sitting.
Penelope sighs “Grant is planning something..” she mutters.
Anna raises an eyebrow at that “Planning something? Why do you think that?”
“He is being vague, he isn’t good at hiding when he is planning something..” Penelope sighs and looks back at the phone “During our coding sessions.. He has been looking at me for a while like he wants to say something…”
Anna looks at her friend, she is about to answer when Penelope’s phone rings and the caller ID is Grant.
Penelope excuses herself as she exits the room. Anna sighs and picks up her phone and sees a new message from Evan.
“These two are helpless”
Anna chuckles at that.
Penelope comes back into the room “I am going out to meet up with Grant” She says as she puts her coat on. Her hair is now brushed and she is wearing one of her more nicer shirts.
Anna gives a thumbs up “Remember to have fun… but not too much fun.” Anna says with a wink
Penelope lets out a little “Oh. My. God.” before the front door closes and the apartment is filled with Anna’s laughter.
— — — — —
Grant has been walking around his apartment for a while now. He has looked at himself in the mirror at least ten times by now, cleaned up his glasses three times, fixed his normally messy blond hair.
“Dude, calm down. You look good.” Evan says from the doorway to the bathroom.
Grant seems to ignore him as he sighs and walks out of the bathroom. Evan follows Grant around as he starts picking up different items, these being a basket full of sweets as well as triangle sandwiches. His gaze turns to look at a small card on the table, it is white but has text inside… text he wrote last night over and over again.
“I think I am ready now..” Grant says and he pulls out his phone again and calls Penelope.
“Hey Penelope?… Yes everything is ok, I was wondering if you were busy right now?...” Grant speaks on the phone.
Evan is chuckling a bit and quickly sends a message to Anna.
“Would you like to meet up in front of the school?.. Yes that sounds good.. See you later Penelope.” Grant hangs up the phone and sees Evan grinning at him.
Before Grant can say anything, Evan is already pushing him out of the door “Go now, try to be there before her.” He says with a grin.
Grant nods and quickly puts on his coat. He exits the apartment and walks down to his car. He puts the items under the blanket, being really careful to put the small letter into his coat pocket so it won’t accidentally get lost.
He starts the car and before driving forward he fixes his hair again using the side mirror. He starts driving, the trees that he drives past have already gained their colors of the summer. He exits his car and stands beside the meeting place he and Penelope agreed upon.
“Grant! Hi” He hears Penelope yell.
He turns to look over and a small smile falls on his face. “Hey Penelope!” He says as he walks over to the passenger side door and opens it up for her. She chuckles a little at the gesture.
As he gets into the car Penelope turns to look at him, “So where are we going?”
Grant lets out a nervous yet warm chuckle, “It’s a surprise” He grins. Penelope nods and turns to look out the window, seeming to be excited. She watches as they get more out of the city, now entering smaller side roads.
Her hand holds the hand he uses to switch the gears, a small gesture but a comforting one. They go uphill for a while and as they finally reach their destination the sun has only a couple of hours of time in the sky before going behind the horizon.
Penelope looks around, there is an old pavilion. It looks a little worse for wear but it doesn’t look like it would fall apart. All around, however, are small yellow flowers that look like small stars on the ground. Grant turns to look at Penelope and extends his hands for her and she takes his hand. He leads her to the pavilion and they both sit down.
“This place is so beautiful, Grant!” Penelope says.
Grant smiles “I am glad you like this Penelope” He says with a warm smile as he pulls out the snacks he made for this occasion.
They eat and soon the sun is setting, turning the sky into a beautiful colour of orange and dark blue. Grant and Penelope talk and soon they find themselves laying down on the flower bed. Penelope laughs at a small joke that Grant made and he can’t help but look at this woman who has taken over his mind and world in less than 3 months time.
He holds her hand as they look up towards the sky, small fire flies flying around them as the world seems to be giving space for something precious.
Grant looks over at Penelope and she looks at him.
“It’s time..”
Grant slowly sits up and Penelope looks a little confused at this. She sits up to look at him. Grant fumbles around with his pocket, almost dropping the small card. He looks at Penelope.
“Penelope.. I..” He lets out a nervous cough. Penelope looks a little worried but she lets him speak.
“Penelope, my beautiful butterfly.. I don’t know how to word this without seeming cheesy..” He lets out a chuckle. He looks back at Penelope, then at the card. He shakes his head and puts it back into the pocket.
He grabs a hold of Penelope’s hands gently, they look at each other “Penelope.. would you..”
“Like to go to prom with me?”
Penelope lets out a surprised gasp as she looks at Grant. Slowly tears start to fall from her eyes as a smile forms. She pulls her hands from Grant’s grasps and throws her arms around Grant as a hug.
“I would love to go to prom with you Grant!” Penelope says Grant hugs her closer.
They pull away from each other and just look at each other. They slowly stand up, again intertwining their hands as Grant pulls Penelope's hand up and gives a small kiss.
“Shall we have one dance under the night sky, my darling?” Grant asks as he looks up at Penelope.
She smiles, her eyes still wet from the tears.
“Yes.. We shall.”
They dance. The world disappears around them as their legs move like a perfect symphony, like two pieces of each other. They spin, they slow dance.. But their eyes never left one another.
Soon the dancing came to a stop, Grant held Penelope close and Penelope held Grant close. They looked up at each other and as a satisfied smile falls on both of their faces.
They kiss again..
Hoping this happiness is forever lasting.
