Chapter Text
Maka woke up to a pounding headache, and not the faintest idea of anything that she said or did last night. She tried to call Soul to ask if she had made a fool of herself last night, but it went straight to voicemail. Maybe he was just busy. Or maybe she did do something stupid, and he was avoiding her now.
She had also wanted to call Tsubaki, but Maka had a theory that she went back to Liz’s house last night. So she assumed that they wouldn't want to be disturbed.
Maka pushed aside that thought, and got up to get water from the communal kitchen downstairs. Most of the students who lived in her dorm building either had meal plans, or typically went out to eat. This meant that the kitchen was almost always empty. Emphasis on almost.
As she pushed through the doors that led to the kitchen, she rested her eyes on someone who was standing at the stove.
“Soul?” Maka wasn't entirely sure if it was Soul, because of the fact that his whole head was covered with a black hoodie. But she just had a feeling that she couldn't explain.
The boy turned his head and gave her an unamused look. Maybe Maka did do something wrong.
“Are you okay Soul?” Maka was really worried now.
“Sorry Maka, I’m just tired and hungover. How are you holding up?” That sentence eased Maka's mind.
“Same as you. Tired, hungover, and can't remember anything that I did last night, so that’s great! I didn't do anything stupid or weird, did I?” She asked with a hopeful tone in voice.
Soul looked like he was trying to remember the events of last night when he suddenly paused and started to grin. “Nope, nothing that I can remember.”
Maka wasn't convinced. “Are you sure? Because if you’re holding out on me Evans, I will be so very mad at you.”
“Nope Maka, you didn't do anything stupid, or weird last night, I can assure you of that,” Soul said with a grin still plastered on his face.
“If I didn't do anything stupid last night, why are you smiling?” Soul clearly remembered something that she did last night. If it wasn't anything stupid or weird, then what the hell was it?
“Only time will tell young grasshopper. If you’re still curious by tonight I’ll tell you,” Soul remarked smugly. Maka never understood anything that he was talking about.
“Oh yeah I was meaning to ask you, could we finish the project in your dorm room? I’m guessing that Tsubaki’s gonna want some time to herself tonight after that party. They really take it out of her.”
Soul shifted on his feet before coming up with an answer. “Yeah I guess we could go to mine. My roommate might come home at some point though.” Soul looked kind of concerned by that last bit. How bad could his roommate be? They were best friends, weren't they?
“Okay. It's a date! See you later!” Maka was half joking, but by the look on Soul's face, he was caught off guard.
Soul spent his whole day with his head in the clouds. He couldn't stop thinking about Maka. Why had she said that he was cute? Why did she say that she wanted to kiss him? He couldn't tell if it was all a joke, or if she was being serious. Maybe Soul was an idiot.
Worst and best of all, she was coming to HIS dorm tonight. What if he couldn't hold back and tried to kiss her? Would she like it? Or would she punch him in the face? Soul really didn't want to mess things up.
Soul tried to forget about his feelings of impending doom. He had to get ready. Maka would be over soon and he was still in his pajamas.
He put on a pair of black baggy jeans and thought to himself, “Sure, why not?” The real issue was what to put on the top half of his body. Soul didn't typically care much about how he dressed, but when it came to Maka, he wanted to look good. He pulled out a bunch of shirts from his drawer but none of them were right.
Then Soul had an idea. Black Star was stylish. He should just borrow his clothes. Soul crept over to his drawer and pulled out a red and black striped polo shirt. “Perfect.” He layered the shirt over a plain white long sleeve. He put on some simple jewelry, and then sat down to wait for Maka.
After about 20 minutes he heard a delicate knock on his door. His heart skipped a beat. “Soul? Are you in there?”
He practically ran over to the door.
He opened it gently, ready to greet Maka with a smile. But when he opened the door his jaw dropped. Maka had always been the most stunning girl that he had seen. However, today took the cake. She was wearing eyeliner. Not an aggressive wing or anything. Just on her waterline. It accentuated her green eyes just enough to make them look even bigger than usual.
Soul was seriously starting to question if she was an angel sent from heaven.
“Soul? Are you okay? Why are you staring like that?” She sounded concerned, but the blush on her cheeks made it clear that she knew exactly why he was staring.
“Nothing! Sorry Maka. You just look really beautiful,” he mumbled that last part hoping that she wouldn't hear him.
“Oh do I? You’re looking pretty beautiful yourself,” she laughed that last line out. If this girl wasn't his soulmate, he wasn't sure who was.
She stood awkwardly at the door until she said, “So are you gonna let me in?”
“Oh right, come in. Welcome to my humble abode,” said Soul with a grin. God I’m such a loser.
“Okay so the final thing that we have to complete is acting out a meaningful scene of our choosing from the play,” Maka said in a matter of fact tone.
“Yeah, do you have any idea of what scene we should do? I mean what’s a classic scene that everyone would recognize?” Soul knew exactly what scene he wanted to act out, but he wasn't about to say it in front of Maka.
“Well we could recreate their first kiss — oh but you know we don’t have to do that one. It was just a suggestion!”
Well Maka is certainly being straightforward, “No! That's a great scene! I think we should do it,” Maybe Soul was a little bit too excited.
“Oh — ok lets do it then,” Maka looked nervous, but hey! She was the one that suggested it not Soul.
They both got up and started rehearsing their lines, until it was finally time to act out the scene.
“If I profane with my unworthiest hand this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this:” Soul nervously took Maka's hand and then spoke again, “My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss,” Soul was seriously terrified, but it was too late to turn back now.
“Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, which mannerly devotion shows in this;” Maka placed her palm against Souls with a smirk on her face. “For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch, and palm to palm is holy palmers kiss.”
“Have not saints' lips, and holy palmers too?” Soul wasn't usually the best actor but in front of Maka he was ten times worse.
Maka stared into Souls eyes and then said her next line, “Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.”
“O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.”
“Saints do not move, though grant for prayers sake,” Maka had a red hue on her cheeks, which perfectly matched Souls.
“Then move not, while my prayers effect I take,” Soul had begun to break out in a sweat. What if he was a really bad kisser and nobody ever told him? What if Maka never wanted to talk to kiss him again after this? What if —
Soul didn't get to finish his last thought as Maka grabbed his shirt and slowly pulled him towards her. She had an innocent look in her eyes but Soul knew better than to trust it.
“Maka what are you doing? Romeo’s supposed to —” Before he could finish his sentence, Maka's lips were on his.
The kiss started out delicate, which is how a stage kiss should go. Their lips were just pecking at each other. However, as they gained more courage, the kiss was becoming much more intimate.
Soul never wanted to make Maka uncomfortable by instigating a kiss, that's why he was so hesitant. However, by the look and feel of it she was far from uncomfortable.
Maka slowly grazed her hands through Souls' hair, causing him to let out a quiet groan into her mouth. Normally he would be embarrassed by it, but around Maka he felt like he could be vulnerable. It was like she was the only person in the whole world who wouldn't judge him.
Gaining confidence, Soul kept one of his hands on Maka's cheek, and slowly moved the other down to her lower back. His hand was ever so slightly slipping under her shirt. Not so much that he felt perverted, but just enough so that he could touch her bare skin.
Everything was relatively innocent until Maka grabbed Soul by the collar and dragged him onto his bed, kissing him along the way. Maka was way more forward than Soul had thought. Though he definitely didn’t mind. Soul thought that it was extremely hot.
As they got more comfortable, Soul began to kiss down Maka's neck. At one point, out of excitement he accidentally bit her, and to Soul’s surprise, she let out a pleased moan.
Out of revenge Maka grinned and grabbed Soul’s face, bringing him back to her lips. Instead of kissing him like a normal person, she aggressively bit down on his lower lip. She giggled as Soul let out a pained cry. This girl might actually be a sadist.
He wasn't gonna let her get the best of him though. So he pulled her in for a very aggressive and heavy kiss. Their lips felt like they were practically suctioned together, but neither of them were anywhere close to stopping.
Soul was having the best kiss of his life. That was until he heard a familiar annoying voice break his moment of glee. “Soul what the hell! I thought you were finishing your group project. Why are you in our dorm kissing some random girl? And is that my shirt that you’re wearing?”
They both swiftly stopped their time of bliss to gaze up at the blue haired boy standing in the doorway. Alongside him, was a black haired boy with three white stripes on one side of his head. The dark looking boy looked uncomfortable with the whole ordeal, but he stayed quiet and stood in the hallway.
“Blackstar! What are you doing here? I thought you were at a party!” Soul's time with Maka was completely ruined just because Blackstar couldn't stick to his word. “And for your information, I said that I would be finishing my project HERE in our dorm. You would know that if you ever bothered to actually read your messages. And so what if it's your shirt?”
“Ha! Well this doesn't look like a project to me. Unless you’re studying anatomy.” Blackstar remarked with a teasing grin. “Besides I was at a party. Me and Kid just decided to come back here and do some – uh – studying.”
“Oh I’m sure that that's what you were going to do.” Soul didn’t believe Blackstar for one second. They were best friends, which meant that Soul knew his type. And this Kid, or whatever his name is, was definitely it.
“Anyways, who's your friend? Or should I say girlfriend?” Soul and Maka blushed at that.
“Oh uh this is —” Soul was interrupted by the girl who he had been happily kissing just moments before. “My name's Maka.” She said with a very unamused and somewhat sarcastic tone in her voice.
“Well Maka what’s your business with my roommate? You better not be using him for his smoking hot looks or his genius brain.” Soul was flattered that Blackstar thought so highly of him but now was not the time.
“What the hell are you even talking about frat boy? Do you and the black haired guy behind you share a brain cell? Oh, or does only one person use it at a time?” Soul looked at Kid and couldn’t help but let out a laugh when he realized what Maka was talking about. He was blankly staring off into the distance with a slack jaw. Clearly something was on his mind, but he just looked like a person who just woke up from a coma.
Blackstar started to step forward ready to defend Kid when he suddenly started to talk, “This room is perfectly symmetrical! Well aside from how unbelievably messy this bed is! You two get up right now, let me fix it.” With that, they were ushered off of the bed as Kid began fixing whatever was wrong with it.
Maka looked embarrassed and upset with the whole situation. So Soul decided to take it upon himself to fix the problem. “Okay well it was great talking to you guys, but we’re gonna leave you two alone now! Bye!” At that, Soul grabbed Maka's hand and practically ran out of the dorm room.
As the door slammed shut behind them they were left in a state of awkwardness. Soul felt the need to say something, anything! “I’m sorry Maka, I really didn’t mean for that to happen!”
“It’s okay I guess. Your roommate is an asshole though.” Maka was still angry and Soul could tell that Blackstar was gonna be on Maka’s bad side for a while.
“He’s actually a good guy once you get to know him. First impressions are not his specialty.” He was being truthful. Blackstar is a great friend, he's just a little headstrong.
“I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Then Soul came up with a brilliant idea. “Hey Maka, do you want to go for a walk around campus? You know, to cool off and relax. I think we could both use it.” Soul really didn’t want to deal with an angry Maka all night.
“Sure, I would love to.”
They walked outside into the peaceful dusk atmosphere. They were both silent but it was comfortable. They were just taking the time to enjoy each other's presence.
After a few minutes of walking Maka suddenly spoke up, “You know I’m kinda glad that we got interrupted,” Souls’ heart dropped. “Not because I wanted to stop kissing or anything, trust me. But if we weren't interrupted, we wouldn't be enjoying this beautiful night sky.”
“Yeah I agree, but it's mostly beautiful because you’re here.” Soul casually remarked.
“You are such a geek sometimes, Soul Evans. Did you know that?” Maka said it in a teasing way but Soul could tell she meant it with love.
“Well geeks only obsess over things that they think are very cool.”
“Oh really? I guess I’m a geek then because I think you’re pretty cool.” They were clearly both really bad at flirting but that's what made them perfect for each other.
Soul had to think very carefully about what he was about to say, but he figured it was now or never. “Hey Maka, do you think that I could possibly be your boyfriend?”
He waited anxiously for a response until Maka stopped walking and stared into his eyes. She stayed silent for a few moments then she let out a breath, “I would love nothing more.”
They didn’t kiss or even hold hands. They just continued walking with smiles plastered on both of their faces, both secretly hoping that they would stay this way forever.
