Specimen 3

Chapter 3: Draft 3

Summary:

Shiny new and improved version of the original work

Notes:

I took a break, then reread both Draft 1 and 2...

I question my talent in the language arts. It is so mind-bogglingly boring.

Anyway, stuff I've tried to work on this time:

Dottore's annoyance and personality at age 30ish (based on what i see in anomalous marrow 2)

Mr Pants' glibness. This is pure extrapolation, I only know he talked his way out of being killed

Flow and clarity.

Either the ellipses are not ellipsing and my pauses dont feel long, awkward or quiet enough, or i skim too fast. I added more ellipses.

More of Dottore's inner monologue

Humour

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

EXPERIMENT REPORT

Experimental Subject: Acute Toxicity Test

Specimen 1: Male, 43 years

Specimen Presentation: Obese with signs of mental confusion. Vital signs were stable. Toxicology screening indicated the presence of other drugs in specimen's system.

‘Hey.’

Route of Administration: High-dose oral ingestion

‘Hey, mister.’

Reactions: Specimen exhibited minor extremity spasms within 60 seconds, with no vomiting or distress in the chest area. Onset of hallucinations occurred at T+5 minutes, accompanied by cognitive-linguistic disorganization.

‘Hey!’

Progression to respiratory failure and death occurred at T+8 minutes.

Having finished recording One's reactions, I slap the quill down against the table.

‘Tsk, what is it? Will you be quiet?’

‘Mister, who are you?’

‘The person who will kill you soon enough. Will you shut up?’

I pick up the quill.

Specimen 2: Male, 28 years

‘Well, if I am a dead man walking, I have nothing to lose, do I? How should I address you?’

What an annoying prisoner.

‘...You may call me the Doctor.’

‘Uh…’

Specimen Presentation:

Medium build with signs of psychological instability.

‘...Pardon?’

Goodness, this annoying man. I slam the quill against the table again.

‘The Doctor! Is that so hard to understand?’

‘...’

Finally, that man has shut up.

Physical restraints were utilized due to acute non-compliance. Vital signs were excessively robust, exceeding—

‘Well, I must say, what you are doing right now is rather unexpected for a doctor.’

My quill stalls.

Not like I chose that title… the Jester did…

—expected physiological parameters.

Hm, he should've been the first specimen. And if he wasn't the first, he should've been the second. But I'm already halfway through the preparations on Number Two, and I can't possibly do gastric gavage on a man bleeding out internally from his abdominals, even if said bleeding isn't that severe.

Ugh, no matter. He'll be next. But what route would cause the most pain?

‘Doctor? Why'd you suddenly stop writing?’

‘...Tch.’

Dermal absorption for him.

Route of Administration: High-dose gastric gavage

I take the syringe and fill it to the corresponding dose for the specimen's weight.

‘Doctor? Will you answer?’

I exhale sharply through my nose. No, I will absolutely not answer. I shove the tube almost too forcefully into Two's oesophagus, and administer the poison.

Timer start.

Reactions:

‘Doctor, if I may ask, why are you doing this?’

…Maybe he'll be less annoying if I just answer him?

‘To see the capabilities of the human body.’

My eyes flick over to Three. I could see the next question forming.

‘Why?’

My eyes go back to Two and the timer.

‘I want to make a god. A human is little more than a complex machine, after all. A god should be no different. With the right adjustments, a human body should be able to be modified to become just like that of a god.’

‘I see. Well, personally, I hate the gods.’

I wait for an explanation.

At T+2 minutes, subcutaneous bleeding was observed. Subject remained passive with no signs of combative behavior following the removal of physical restraints.

Specimen reported numbness in the extremities, with neither spasms in the limbs nor vomiting.

Is he just not going to explain?

Is it my turn to ask a stupid question now? That has to be his intention, right?

… This is getting painful.

‘...Why so?’

Yes, yes, why? Why did I ask such a dumb thing?

‘Well, don't you think it's unfair that the gods can choose who to favour? Especially in the world of money! Morax has no need for it, yet mora flows from him and him alone. That anchor in and of itself designates that place to be greater than any other by default.’

Huh, an interesting opinion, no doubt. Certainly not the most typical.

‘And when we think of a god, we tend to think of immortality and power, don't we?’

Not wrong.

‘Well?’

‘Doctor, won't you answer?’

‘Mm, I guess.’

Why can't this man just continue speaking?

‘Well then, Doctor, why don't I become your test subject for research into immortality? You can use me for the prototype drug. Preliminary testing can be done on others.’

Does this man have no fear? Or is he just insane? After seeing me like this, it has to be the latter.

At T+4 minutes, subject exhibited rapid involuntary eye movement indicative of hallucinatory activity. Mortality occurred at T+5 minutes following respiratory arrest.

Specimen 3: Male, 20 years

Specimen Presentation:

Slim of build, appeared fully oriented and alert. Multiple superficial injuries accompanied by intra-abdominal hemorrhage. Vital signs unstable.

‘Doctor, can you answer? It's alright if it's a no.’

‘No.’

‘Oh, ok. I was lying when I said it's alright if it was a no. You know that right?’

‘I assumed so. You're quite desperate to survive.’

‘ I thought I would be able to convince you to spare me—

— I can tell.’

‘Oh, um, anyway, that's why I wanted to know you motivations. I thought I could find something to pique your interest or exploit. Since I know myself to be a pretty good negotiator.’

‘You thought wrong.’

I take the poison and take the amount for the man's weight.

‘Right… you're not very popular, are you?’

…Huh? What is this out of Teyvat's ass?

‘You don't speak at all.’

No, no. Isn't that just because you're annoying? How did that become my problem? I wasn't some loner back at the Akademiya…

‘Hm, in that case, see you in hell, Doctor. But honestly, why are you opposed to my proposition? A normal person would've been crying… doesn't that show I have superior mental fortitude? I should be a better candidate than most, right? And it seemed like you somehow hadn't thought of it yet anyway, so shouldn't you reward my genius with a little mercy—

— Specimen Three, can you shut up?’

‘Oh, I'm next?’

‘Yep.’

Route of Administration: High-dose dermal absorption

Why is proposition actually be worth considering? As far as test subjects go, he is indeed very level-headed. He might actually become a good investment if he somehow manages to impress the Tsaritsa. If he doesn't die of internal bleeding first.

I take the anaesthetic and administer it to Three. His eyes shut.

I take a fresh set of surgical tools.

…I’ll be damned, huh. What am I doing?

I put back the surgical tools and pick up the poison.

Dammit, he is pretty darn good at talking.

Route of Administration: High-dose dermal absorption ——

Reactions: ——

Specimen 4: Female, 35 years

Specimen Presentation: Slim build, comatose. Vital signs were abnormal, with no response to external stimuli.

Route of Administration: High-dose neural injection

Reactions: Onset of subcutaneous bleeding immediately following injection. Death occurred rapidly at T+3 minutes, with no signs of emergence from comatose state prior to death.

Specimen 5...

...

Initial Assessment: Disruption of vascular integrity exceeded expectations. Preliminary data suggests significant practical utility, and further validation of the protocol is indicated.

Investigator: Zandik

‘Hey, I thought you were gonna kill me?’

‘You have a very glib tongue, Number Three. What's your name?’

‘Feofan.’

‘Your full name.’

‘Feofan Sergeyevich Veksel.’

※ Specimen 3's records were transferred to another file.

※ File Name: Feofan Sergeyevich Veksel

Notes:

There is still something very wrong with all this but i do not have the luxury of time to reguse this again. Perhaps things will be clearer once i find the time to finish the archon quest, which i also do not have the luxury to complete until december

Notes:

Why is the spacing so large? It's way harder to read than in the doc.
