Steve got to unraveling his perfect work. He removed about 3 of the 5 layers and it started to get bloody. Bucky was staring straight at the wound.
“Buck, would you quit looking at your leg? You're gonna make yourself sick for goodness sake”
“I'm fine,” Bucky mumbled.
“Whatever,” Steve shrugged.
“This might hurt a little, the wound is still very fresh and I gotta re-wrap it later. Currently, it still has to breathe”
Bucky said nothing in return.
Steve got to work, going a bit more carefully to not let the bleeding start again. He carefully removed the second layer of gauze, only to find a large bloody splotch on the first layer.
To be expected I guess.
“Buck, why don't you look away? Read a magazine or something”
“I’m fine”
“You aren't, but I'm not cleaning it up if you throw up again” Steve retorted.
“Fine by me. Nothin’ to clean if it ain't happenin”
“Since when were you southern?”
“Since ya started babyin’ me” Bucky said. He continued to stare at his leg, but was blinking more.
I'm glad I have my Buck back. He gets feisty when he's not in pain.
Steve continued unraveling the gauze from his best friend until he saw skin. His wound was just a straight line down his shin, pretty deep but it wasn't bleeding and it was healing nicely.
“Your wound is so clean, Buck. It's a miracle it didn't hit a vein or your bone”
“Miracles happen Steve. Here I am, in the flesh. A living, breathing, hundred and somethin’ year old miracle”
“Oh shut up”
“You know I'm right Steve” Bucky said, looking at Steve with a devilish smirk on his face.
Steve said nothing but wore his perfect, teethless smile as he glanced up at his lifelong best friend.
“I'm with you till the end of the line, pal” Steve said, still addressing Bucky’s leg.
“Hey! I say that!” Bucky said.
They both started laughing, happy they had never lost each other.
