Chapter 2: The Plan (and its complications)

Summary:

The plan gets slightly fleshed out, but some returning residents of the spire might be causing some issues.

Notes:

A bit shorter than my last chapter, but I feel like its a good place to stop and start work on the next chapter, hopefully the next one wont take as long but I'm bad at forcing myself to write even though I enjoy doing it

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Serial designation N was having a moment of contemplation. There wasn’t really anything else he could do at the moment since his physical components wouldn't fully boot for a good 10 minutes, at least he will get his sensors and more recent memories back in a second! He could only remember being vaguely excited about his new friend and Z getting along so well! He really hoped they would get along with each other.

As his memories started to come back, so did his targeting system, working correctly this time around. And that is when he noticed. This immediately sent him into a spiral. Thoughts were rushing through his head at breakneck pace, which was a fitting descriptor as he felt like he might break over this “Oh gosh how do I fix this J is going to be so mad when she finds out and Oh no Z is still here she might tell them even though she’s never done that kind of thing before butmaybeshellrealiseimafailurethisti-” “-an you hear me yet N?” a gentler voice came through his now functioning audio receptors.

As Z worked on N, her form was illuminated by the various computers and machines that began to glow around her, producing a more defined appearance, and allowing luger to see her form significantly more clearly and he realised that her height wasn’t the only difference between Z and the other disassemblers. Her fingers had an extra joint in them and where a glowing vial of fluid was placed on N’s tail, there was a screwdriver on hers.

She was typing on two computers at once, using her tail to type on a keyboard behind her. All the while she was explaining her plan to Luger. The main objective for now would be to take out the squads leader, Serial Designation J. According to Z, N wouldn’t be to hard to convince into joining them, Z saying that as soon they were able to convince him that Luger and his compatriots were sentient, he would be down for a heel faced turn and joining their “angsty rebellion”.

She did specifically point out that V might pose another issue to this plan, but specified that she should not be killed. “She definitely knows more than she’s letting on, and she always runs away when me or N try to talk to her, so I’m hoping that if we tie her down we’ll be able to get some straight answers.” Z gave out as her reasoning, although it felt like there was more than that under the surface.

The time passed quickly as Z worked on getting N his sensors back, throwing ideas about how they would kill all of the humans (which Luger thought was a bit extreme but not unwarranted) once they got this ship repaired, although from what Z had been saying that seemed like it might be a good amount of time away. The ship had been built like a one way missile, the parts could technically form something capable of taking off but the systems were designed in a way that seemed designed to all break at once upon landing, leaving only enough structure to serve as a base of operations.

“They’re covering their tracks. That means we’ve passed the point of negotiation” Z threw in to cover any potential objections from Luger. Luger hadn’t made any objections so far, he knew that even though this drone wasn’t designed just to kill, she could definitely still do it. Her every move was made with a finesse that portrayed a significantly stronger internal system than even the strongest of workers. She could kill him in under a second if she wanted to, so Luger decided it was best to stay on her good side.

As the recumbent drone began the long process of starting up, which according to Z would “only” take another half hour before N was fully functional, time that they could use to convince him over to their side.
Luger normally would have been apprehensive about trying to convince a machine designed with the express intent of killing his entire species to work with them to do the opposite of that, but after hearing said killing machine talk about his love of golden retrievers for a full 30 minutes, he was thinking very differently.

As the Z began to talk to the drone lying on the table, eventually getting slow, and mostly positive sounding conversation, N seemed to be convinced over to there cause without that much hesitation once he seemed to realise it was Z talking. N’s only point of hesitation was a brief questioning of if they’d hurt V, to which Z responded “only if we need to, she’s staying alive whether she wants to or not”. This sparked a sudden question within Lugers mind, when are the other two mentioned disassemblers getting here, and what are they going to do if they arrive while Lugers still in the pod?

V and J were flying back from a long hunt, J was on one of her long rants about keeping up with quota and breaking into that bunker to reclaim the resources from the malfunctioning toasters. V had already tuned her out completely.

Instead, V’s thoughts began to drift to the two drones that should be at the spire right now, N had been told not to stray to far from the area, while Z was left in the spire almost constantly, her body not being as suited for the violence the other three revelled in, so J never called upon her to do the kind of things the other three did. At least she was spared from that.

J’s memories were erased almost completely, only leaving her with vague ideas about what had happened. But V remembered everything. And it was torture.

Trying to put those thoughts out of her mind, V instead focused on the destination she and J were flying to, N would probably be keeping Z company, so V planned to keep her distance it was better for them that way.

Pushing past all those thoughts, she checked the ETA reading on her internal systems, 25 minutes until arrival, her oil reserves should last but they’d be a bit low, hopefully there would be some idiot worker stumbling around outside.

As Luger was stumbling around trying to keep up with Z and the newly fixed and rebellious N, Z rambled on about her plan to get revenge on all of humanity, “Once we send that corpo-bitch back to her makers and fix the pod, we’ll kill each and every one of those meat bags” Z proclaimed with incredible confidence, which she really shouldn’t have since she’s never tried to kill an entire species before.

But just as they were about to exit into open air, two robot shaped missiles came flying into the ground.

And they were both incredibly hungry.
