Chapter Text
Suga watched as Hinata and Kageyama faced each from across the court, both heavily breathing as they regarded each other.
Neither said anything even as their teammates clasped their shoulders on the way out.
He felt Daichi peering over his shoulder as Asahi whispered, “They really haven’t changed, have they?”
Suga hummed as he blinked out of the trance the two players still seemed to be under, “We’ll let them have their moment. We’re meeting the others down the street,”
The group shifted from their seats and began the short walk to the restaurant down the road. “How is Noya?” Kiyoko asked from where she walked next to Tanaka.
Asahi hummed, “Good- upset he couldn’t make the match but he should be at the restaurant right about now,”
Asahi tensed as he heard a voice call out “Hey wait up!” from behind them.
The group turned to see Yachi and Yamaguchi jogging to catch up with them, “Hey!” the shorter grinned.
“Yachi!” Suga exclaimed and pulled her into a side hug.
“Sorry we weren't seated near you! We saw you walking past so decided to catch up,”
Daichi glanced behind them, “No Tsukishima with you? He’s the only one missing- Ennoshita, Narita, Noya, and Kinoshita are all meeting us at the restaurant,”
Yamauchi laughed and tucked his hands into his jacket pockets, “Said he wanted to bring the car to the restaurant parking and to go ahead. He really doesn’t like parking at the stadium,”
They laughed as they walked down the road, catching up with each other. The rest of the group were already sitting in the back room that they had booked when they arrived. After another round of hugs they all took their seats.
Tsukishima arrived soon after and sat in his usual spot next to Yamaguchi. Tsukki and Noya, who was sitting to his left, began talking about the shorter’s latest trip.
Suga was sitting across from Yamaguchi when the younger pulled out his chair and- “When did you get married?”
Suga would’ve liked to think that his question came across as calm and cool and collected.
It did not.
Because sitting on Yamaguchi’s left hand was a silver band.
Glancing at Tsukishima, Suga noticed the lack of one on the taller’s hand.
Damn. Poor guy.
“Oh?” Yamaguchi glanced down at his ring with a small smile, “About a year and a half ago. It was a courthouse wedding- we didn’t want to have it be a whole big thing,”
“Oh!” Suga knew that the others were connecting the dots as well, “Well, I’m glad you’re happy,”
He was trying very hard not to let on that he was completely blind sided by this. He had thought that the two would come to their senses and realize the feelings they had for each other after high school, like he and Daichi did. He knew Daichi was thinking the same thing because his boyfriend gently held his hand under the table.
Noya must have thought something similar but instead chose to be blunt about it, “You know it’s kinda funny- I thought you were gonna end up with Tsukishima in the end,”
Ennoshita (who was sitting to the left of Noya) quickly hit the back of his head with a hissed “You can’t just say that!”
Yamaguchi made a questioning noise at both of them, “What?”
Tanaka took over, “Well- we thought that you might have a crush on Tsukishima? Or the other way around- but I told them that it wasn’t that” he puffed up his chest.
Tsukishima raised an eyebrow at the elder, “What is that supposed to mean?”
“No need to be salty about it Tsukishima! It’s all in the past-” Kyioko placed a hand on Tanaka’s shoulder effectively shutting him up.
“You don’t think…?” Tsukishima let the question hang in the air.
Suga decided to take pity on him, “It was just a rumor that went around the club. It never,” he couldn’t figure out how to delicately put it, “amounted to anything,”
That might have been the wrong thing to say. He meant it in a ‘we never judged or brought it up’ way. It sounded more like he was rubbing the failed part of the relationship.
Yamaguchi had lifted a hand to his mouth during the conversation- presumably to hide his shock. In a shocked voice he turned to Tsukishima, “Tsukki,” he paused, “You liked me?”
Suga offered him a sympathetic glance.
Tsukishima’s eyes narrowed at Yamaguchi before they looked up, as if asking the heavens ‘why me’.
He blinked back to look at Yamaguchi before sighing, “Yeah, I did,” he paused, “Since elementary school,”
Suga could hear a gasp but he wasn’t sure who it came from- it could’ve been him for all he knew but he was so focused on the scene in front of him to care. It was like a car crash- he was unable to stop it and save either one of them before-
Tsukishima reached his hand to pull something from the collar of shirt- a chain?
A silver chain was pulled from its resting place under Tsukishima’s shirt until the jewelry was fully on display- his thumb pulling at the attachment pulling it towards Yamaguchi.
“That’s why I married you,”
The whole table went quiet.
Before they all started talking- yelling over each other at the confession.
Yamaguchi pulled his hand away from his mouth and Suga could see that he was actually covering a shit eating grin. He then leaned over and used Tsukishima as support as he began laughing so loudly that Suga could hear it over all the yelling.
Tsukishima’s straight face also cracked, causing him to laugh alongside his…husband.
“Shut it!” Daichi yelled and just like in their third year the table settled to a quieter volume. “Explain,”
Yamaguchi managed to contain his laughs enough to say, “We’ve been dating since middle school. We then got married a year and a half ago,” he said it as if it was obvious.
“So you two were dating during high school!” Yachi exclaimed.
Tsukishima hummed.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Ennoshita asked.
“Didn’t think we had to. It was so normal for us that we didn’t know how it would be any different” Yamaguchi turned to smile at his husband.
“We weren’t hiding it so it should’ve been obvious,” the insult of ‘you’re just too blind to see it’ was left unsaid but not unheard.
Suga glanced at Tsukishima’s hand again, “Why aren’t you wearing a ring?”
Tsukishima pulled at his necklace again and upon closer inspection a golden ring was looped around the chain, “Don’t like the feeling of rings sometimes. They’re too tight or they fall off easily- so this is what we came up with. I can wear it when I want or I can keep it on here,”
Yamaguchi’s quiet smile turned mischievous, “Close to his heart as he always says,”
Tsukishima’s cheeks turned a faint pink at that as he grunted.
Holy shit.
“A courthouse wedding?” Noya filled the silence.
“Yeah, neither of us are big on parties so we figured just having our families and our witnesses would be fine. Then we could use the wedding money on a house or something,” Yamaguchi responded.
“Who were your witnesses?”
Tsukishima smirked, “Kuroo and Bokuto,”
Tanaka made a noise at the back of his throat, “What??”
“Well, Kenma was also there. And Aaskahi.” Yamaguchi amended.
“They knew?” Noya hissed.
“Uh,” Tsukishima raised an eyebrow at him, “Yeah? Did none of you really know?”
Suga decided to take one for the team, “We thought something might have been going on but not,” he gestured at them.
“Thanks,” Tsukishima replied flatly.
Just as Ennoshita opened his mouth to ask another question the doors to the back room flew open and Hinata and Kageyama appeared, “Hey hey hey!” Hinata yelled.
“Oh god, not another Bokuto,” Tsukishima muttered, causing Yamaguchi to laugh.
The group must have still looked shellshocked as Hinata slowly lowered his arms and shared a glance with Kageyama.
“What did we miss?”
