Chapter Text
-Gangle-
After Jax’s comment, Caine swiftly snapped his fingers, teleporting us to the entrance of a huge corn maze. I subtly glanced over at Jax, who was visibly shaking. I felt bad for the purple rabbit, and wanted to comfort him. That feeling quickly went out the window when I remembered all the cruel things Jax had done to me.
”Righty-ho my fun loving friends, you have 5 minutes to get yourselves into pairs, before the gates to the corn maze will open, and you need to enter. If you aren’t in the maze fast enough, the corn monster will get you!” Caine announced in his booming theatrical voice.
”Ooh, that’s sooo scary, Caine!” Bubble said sarcastically, doing a loop the loop in the air.
Caine scowled at Bubble, before whacking him with his cane, popping him in what looked like an extremely painful way.
“Aanyway, have fun!” Caine finished, before he disappeared, a 5 minute timer appearing above their heads.
Everyone looked at each other, then formed their usual pairs.
”Hey Gangle, do you wanna pair up?” Zooble asked, walking over.
I smiled at them, “uhh, yeah. I’d like that.”
Meanwhile, Pomni approached Jax, “Hey, you got a partner yet?”
”what do you think?” He muttered.
”I think you do,” Pomni grinned, ”cuz I’m right here.”
He smiled at her, not his usual cruel grin that I normally see, but a genuine, happy smile.
They are perfect for each other.
That just left Kinger and Ragatha. They stared at each other, before Ragatha asked, “so… guess we’re partners again.”
Kinger stared at her for ages, motionless.
”Uh, Kinger?”
”AAAAH!!!” shouted Kinger, face planting in the mud, “mm, yummy dirt.”
An air horn sounded and everyone looked up at the timer, which was on zero and flashing red. ‘If you aren’t fast enough, the corn monster will get you!’ Caine’s words got me moving, grabbing Zooble’s arm and dragging them down the left path of the maze, yelling “Come on Zooble, or the corn monster will eat us!
That got all the other pairs moving as they all sprinted down different paths, shouting.
-Pomni-
I gripped Jax’s hand as we ran down the path on the right, then took a left, kept running, then slowed down.
”Do… you think the corn monster will follow us into the maze?” I ask, pulling us into a sharp right.
There was silence as Jax didn’t even react to me speaking. I looked over to him, to see his pupils shot to pinpricks, tears welled in his eyes as they darted around, staring fearfully at all the tall corn we were surrounded by.
I stopped walking.
”Jax?”
No reaction.
“Are… you okay?”
Still nothing.
I grabbed his hand, snapping him out of whatever his mind was buried in.
“Jax, seriously, you’re scaring me. Are you okay?” I asked, my eyes searching his.
He stared at me for a while, before giving up, “No. I… really, really don’t like corn.”
I look at him silently, then pulled him into a gentle hug, my heart pounding as I realised what I did, and the fact that he didn’t pull away like in the gun adventure. He froze, before gripping me like a lifeline, burying his face into my hair.
After what felt like an eternity, but was probably only about thirty seconds, we pulled away. I looked up to see Jax, scratching his elbow, face dusted with a light rose colour.
“Th- thanks, Pom… I needed that,” he muttered, swiftly returning his face into a wide grin, “Now, let’s keep moving, and get out of here.”
“Sure thing, evil bro!” I tease, earning a punch on the shoulder from Jax.
“I hate you.”
I silently and quickly take a deep breath, preparing for what I am about to say.
“Nah, you love me really!”
This has him turn bright red, then back to the usual light purple, “Maybe I do, maybe I don’t.”
“And what if you do?” I pry.
“I would make your life hell just to hide it.”
“Ouch.”
After that, a period of long, awkward silence follows, where we keep walking, me stealing glances at him at every opportunity.
“Hey, Pom?”
“Yeah?”
“I… think we’re lost.”
“You absolute mother[BoInK]er!”
