The Hackers Gambit

Chapter Text

"Last chance, kid. Come quietly, and this doesn't have to get ugly."

The kid's laugh was harsh. "You think I'm scared of you? I've dealt with worse than some mafia boss with an ego problem."

Vincent's men moved in, and what happened next was almost too fast to follow. The kid moved like water, flowing around their attacks with a grace that spoke of years of practice. He was small, but he used that to his advantage, ducking under punches and using his opponents' momentum against them. A knife flashed in his hand, and one of Vincent's men went down with a cry, clutching his leg.

But there were too many of them, and the kid was tiring. Vincent could see it in the way his movements were slowing, becoming less precise. One of his men managed to land a solid hit, and the kid stumbled. That was all the opening they needed.

Vincent saw the tranquilizer dart hit the kid's neck, saw the moment his eyes widened in shock and then fury. The kid fought it, fought the drug with a determination that was almost painful to watch, but chemistry was chemistry. His legs gave out, and he collapsed, caught by one of Vincent's men before he hit the ground.

"Get him to the compound," Vincent ordered, looking down at the unconscious hacker. "And someone call Kieran. Tell him we need to talk."

Akira woke slowly, his mind clawing its way through layers of fog and confusion. His head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and his mouth was dry. He tried to move and found his hands were bound behind him, secured to the chair he was sitting in. Panic flared, sharp and immediate, but he forced it down. Panic got you killed on the streets, and he'd survived this long by keeping his head.

He opened his eyes, taking in his surroundings with the careful assessment of someone used to evaluating threats. The room was large, expensively furnished, with the kind of understated luxury that spoke of serious money. There were no windows, just one door, and he was alone.

No, not alone. There were cameras in the corners, watching him. Akira stared at one, his expression carefully blank, and waited.

He didn't have to wait long. The door opened, and the blond man from the street walked in, followed by two others. Akira's heart stopped, then started again with a painful lurch.

Kieran and Dante.

His boyfriends stood there, staring at him with expressions of shock and horror, and Akira felt something inside him crack. They weren't supposed to be here. This wasn't supposed to happen.

"Akira?" Kieran's voice was barely a whisper, his face pale. "What the hell are you doing here?"

The blond man, the one who'd chased him, looked between them with an expression of dawning realization. "You know him?"

Dante's face had gone carefully blank, his assassin's mask sliding into place, but Akira could see the panic in his eyes. "Vincent, let him go. He's not involved in this."

"Not involved?" Vincent's laugh was harsh. "This is the hacker who helped you three days ago. The one who took down an entire security system and covered your escape. And you're telling me he's not involved?"

Kieran moved forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Vincent, please. He's—"

"He's what?" Vincent's eyes were sharp, missing nothing. "Your friend? Your partner?" His gaze moved between the three of them, and Akira saw the moment he figured it out. "Oh. Oh, this is rich. My little brother is dating the best hacker in Japan, and I had no idea."

Akira found his voice, rough from the tranquilizer but steady. "Let me go, and we can all pretend this never happened."

Vincent turned to him, and there was something calculating in his expression. "Why would I do that? You're exactly what I've been looking for. A hacker with skills that rival my best team, someone who can get in and out of systems without leaving a trace. You're valuable."

"I'm not interested in working for you." Akira's voice was flat, final.

"I don't think you have a choice."

"There's always a choice." Akira met Vincent's eyes, refusing to back down. "And mine is to tell you to go fuck yourself."

Kieran made a strangled sound, and Dante's hand went to his face, but Vincent just laughed. It was a genuine laugh, surprised and almost delighted.

"You've got balls, kid. I'll give you that." He pulled up a chair, sitting down across from Akira. "Let me make you an offer. Work for me, use those skills of yours for something more than helping my idiot brother with his mercenary jobs, and I'll make it worth your while. Money, protection, resources. Whatever you need."

"I don't need anything from you."

"Everyone needs something." Vincent leaned forward, his eyes intense. "What's your price? What would it take to get you on my side?"

Akira's jaw clenched. "There is no price. I'm not for sale."

"Vincent, please." Kieran's voice was desperate now. "He's not part of this world. He doesn't want to be. Just let him go."

Vincent's eyes never left Akira's face. "Is that true? You don't want to be part of this world?"

Akira thought about lying, about telling Vincent what he wanted to hear, but something in those red eyes told him it wouldn't work. This man was too smart, too perceptive.

"I grew up on the streets," Akira said finally, his voice quiet. "I've seen what this world does to people. I've seen the violence, the death, the way it consumes everything it touches. I got out, built a life for myself, and I don't want to go back."

"But you did go back," Vincent pointed out. "Three days ago, you went back to save Kieran. You put yourself in danger, got shot, and you'd do it again in a heartbeat. So don't tell me you're not part of this world. You're just lying to yourself about it."

The words hit harder than they should have, cutting through Akira's defenses with surgical precision. Because Vincent was right. Akira had gone back, had put himself in danger without hesitation, and he would do it again. For Kieran, for Dante, he'd do anything.

"That's different," Akira said, but his voice lacked conviction.

"Is it?" Vincent stood, pacing the room. "Look, kid, I'm not asking you to become a killer or get your hands dirty. I'm asking you to do what you're already good at. Hack systems, gather information, help us stay one step ahead of our enemies. That's it."

"And if I say no?"

Vincent's expression hardened. "Then you're a liability. You know too much, you've seen too much. I can't just let you walk away."

The threat hung in the air, heavy and undeniable. Akira's mind raced, calculating odds and possibilities. He could try to escape, but bound as he was, his chances were slim. He could refuse and hope that Kieran and Dante could convince Vincent to let him go, but that seemed unlikely. Or he could agree, at least temporarily, and figure out a way out later.

"Vincent, you can't do this." Dante's voice was cold, dangerous. "He's Theo's son."

The room went silent. Vincent turned slowly, his expression one of complete shock.

"What?"

Dante's jaw was tight, but he met his brother's eyes steadily. "Akira is Theo's son. Your partner's son. So if you hurt him, you're going to have to answer to Theo."

Vincent's gaze swung back to Akira, reassessing. "Theo has a son?"

"Had," Akira corrected, his voice bitter. "He gave me up when I was a kid. Didn't want the complications of a child in his line of work. I grew up in foster care, then on the streets when that didn't work out. So don't think you can use him as leverage. We're not exactly close."

But Vincent's expression had changed, something almost like respect flickering in his eyes. "Theo's son. That explains the intelligence, at least. And the attitude."

"I'm nothing like him," Akira said sharply.

"You're exactly like him," Vincent countered. "Stubborn, brilliant, and too damn proud for your own good. No wonder you and Kieran get along."

Kieran moved closer, his hand reaching out as if to touch Akira, then dropping. "Vincent, please. I'm begging you. Let him go. I'll do whatever you want, take any job, but please don't drag him into this."

Vincent looked at his brother, really looked at him, and something in his expression softened. "You love him."

"Yes." No hesitation, no doubt.

"And you?" Vincent turned to Dante.

"More than anything," Dante said quietly.

Vincent's gaze returned to Akira, and there was a long moment of silence. Then he sighed, running a hand through his blond hair.

"Fine. I'll make you a deal, kid. Work for me, just for one job. Help me with something I've been trying to crack for months. If you can do it, if you're as good as I think you are, then we'll talk about making this arrangement more permanent. And if you still want to walk away after that, I'll let you go. No strings, no threats."

"And if I can't do it?" Akira asked.

"Then you're not as valuable as I thought, and you're free to go anyway." Vincent shrugged. "But I don't think that's going to be a problem. You're Theo's son and the best hacker in Japan. You'll figure it out."

Akira looked at Kieran, at Dante, seeing the hope and fear warring in their expressions. He thought about his options, about the life he'd built and the life he was being pulled into. And he realized that Vincent was right. He was already part of this world, had been since the moment he'd fallen in love with a mercenary and an assassin.

"One job," Akira said finally. "And then we renegotiate."

Vincent's grin was sharp and satisfied. "Deal." He moved behind Akira, cutting the bonds that held him. "Welcome to the family business, kid."

Akira rubbed his wrists, standing slowly. His legs were unsteady from the tranquilizer, but he forced himself to stay upright. Kieran was there immediately, supporting him, and Dante moved to his other side.

"Are you okay?" Kieran asked, his hands gentle as they checked Akira over.

"I'm fine," Akira said, but his voice was tired. "Just peachy. Got kidnapped by your brother, threatened, and blackmailed into working for the mafia. Just another Tuesday."

Dante's hand cupped his face, turning him so their eyes met. "I'm sorry, cutie. We never wanted you involved in this."

"Yeah, well, too late now." Akira pulled away, needing space, needing to think. He looked at Vincent, who was watching them with an expression that was almost amused. "So what's this job you need me for?"

Vincent's grin widened. "There's a rival organization that's been moving in on our territory. They've got a digital fortress protecting their operations, and my team can't crack it. I need you to get in, find out what they're planning, and give me something I can use against them."

"That's it?" Akira's eyebrows rose. "You kidnapped me for a basic infiltration job?"

"It's not basic if my team can't do it," Vincent pointed out.

Akira snorted. "Your team must be shit then. Fine. I'll need my equipment, a secure location to work from, and complete access to your network."

"Done. Anything else?"

"Yeah." Akira's eyes were hard. "After this is over, you leave me alone. No more job offers, no more threats. I do this one thing, and we're done."

Vincent's expression was unreadable. "We'll see. But for now, you've got a deal."

Akira nodded, already running through the logistics in his head. He was good at this, better than good, and he knew it. One job, and then he could go back to his life, to the illusion of normalcy he'd built. But even as he thought it, he knew it was a lie. There was no going back, not anymore.

He'd crossed a line three days ago when he'd gone to save Kieran, and now he was standing on the other side, in a world of violence and danger that he'd sworn to avoid. But as he looked at Kieran and Dante, at the relief and love in their eyes, he knew he'd make the same choice again.

Because they were his, and he protected what was his. Even if it meant destroying himself in the process.

Vincent led them out of the room, down a hallway that screamed money and power. Akira took in every detail, cataloging exits and security measures out of habit. The compound was impressive, state-of-the-art security that would be a challenge to crack, but not impossible. Nothing was impossible for him.

They entered what looked like a command center, filled with computers and monitors displaying various feeds and data streams. Several people looked up as they entered, their expressions ranging from curious to hostile. Akira ignored them, his attention on the setup.

"This is where you'll be working," Vincent said, gesturing to a station in the corner. "It's isolated from the main network for security, but you'll have access to everything you need."

Akira moved to the station, his fingers already itching to get started. The equipment was top-of-the-line, better than what he had at home, and he felt a small thrill of anticipation despite himself. This was what he was good at, what he'd been born to do.

"I'll need the details on the target," he said, not looking up as he began familiarizing himself with the system. "Everything you have on their security, their network architecture, any vulnerabilities your team has already identified."

"Yuto," Vincent called, and a red-haired man approached, carrying a tablet. "Give him everything."

Yuto handed over the tablet, his expression friendly despite the circumstances. "Hey, man. I'm Yuto, head of the tech team. If you need anything, just let me know."

Akira took the tablet, scanning through the information with practiced efficiency. The target was a mid-level organization called the Kurokawa Syndicate, and their security was indeed impressive. Multiple layers of encryption, constantly rotating access codes, and a network architecture that was designed to be impenetrable. It would take time, but Akira could see the weaknesses, the small cracks in the armor that he could exploit.

"This is going to take a few hours," he said, already lost in the problem. "I'll need coffee, something to eat, and for everyone to leave me alone."

Vincent laughed. "You heard him. Everyone out. Kieran, Dante, you too."

"I'm staying," Kieran said firmly.

"Me too," Dante added.

Akira looked up, meeting their eyes. He wanted to tell them to go, to keep them separate from this part of his life, but he knew it was pointless. They were already involved, had been from the start.

"Fine," he said, turning back to the computer. "But stay quiet. I need to concentrate."

The room cleared, leaving just the four of them. Vincent pulled up a chair, watching as Akira's fingers flew across the keyboard. Kieran and Dante settled nearby, close enough to provide support but far enough to give him space.

Akira lost himself in the work, in the familiar rhythm of code and logic. This was his element, where he was in control, where nothing could touch him. The outside world faded away, leaving just him and the digital landscape he was navigating.

Hours passed, marked only by the occasional cup of coffee that appeared at his elbow and the quiet murmur of voices behind him. Akira barely noticed, too focused on the task at hand. The Kurokawa Syndicate's security was good, but he was better. He found the first vulnerability within an hour, a small flaw in their authentication protocol that he could exploit. From there, it was just a matter of patience and skill.

By the time he finally leaned back, his eyes burning and his shoulders aching, the sun was rising outside. He'd been working for nearly twelve hours, but he'd done it. He was in.

"Got it," he said, his voice hoarse. "I'm in their system. What do you want me to look for?"

Vincent leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "Everything. Financial records, communication logs, operational plans. I want to know what they're planning and how to stop it."

Akira nodded, his fingers already moving again. This part was easier, just a matter of navigating their internal systems and copying the data. He set up a secure transfer, routing it through several proxies to cover his tracks, and within minutes, gigabytes of information were flowing into Vincent's servers.

"Done," he said finally, pushing away from the computer. "You've got everything they have. Financial records going back five years, all their communication logs, and their operational plans for the next six months. Anything else?"

Vincent was staring at the data streaming across his screen, his expression one of disbelief. "You did this in twelve hours?"

"Eleven hours and forty-three minutes," Akira corrected. "But who's counting?"

"My team has been trying to crack this for three months," Vincent said slowly. "And you did it in less than twelve hours."

Akira shrugged, too tired to be smug. "Your team is shit. I already told you that."

Vincent laughed, a genuine sound of amusement and respect. "Yeah, you did. Okay, kid, you've earned your freedom. One job, as promised. You're free to go."

Akira stood, his legs unsteady from sitting for so long. Kieran was there immediately, supporting him, and Dante moved to his other side. They guided him toward the door, but Vincent's voice stopped them.

"Akira."

He turned, meeting Vincent's eyes.

"The offer stands," Vincent said quietly. "If you ever change your mind, if you ever want to use those skills for something more, you know where to find me."

Akira didn't respond, just turned and walked out, leaning heavily on his boyfriends. They made it to the car in silence, and it wasn't until they were driving away that Akira finally spoke.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

"It's not your fault," Kieran said, his hand finding Akira's. "You were just trying to help me. I'm the one who should be apologizing."

"We both should," Dante added from the driver's seat. "We never should have put you in that position."

Akira closed his eyes, exhaustion pulling at him. "It doesn't matter now. It's done."

But even as he said it, he knew it wasn't true. Nothing was done. Vincent knew who he was now, knew what he could do, and that knowledge was dangerous. Akira had spent his whole life trying to stay invisible, to avoid drawing attention, and now he'd been dragged into the spotlight.

And the worst part was, a small part of him had enjoyed it. The challenge, the thrill of cracking an impossible system, the satisfaction of proving he was the best. It was intoxicating, and that scared him more than anything else.

They made it back to the apartment, and Akira collapsed onto the couch, too tired to even make it to the bedroom. Kieran and Dante settled on either side of him, their presence a comfort and a reminder of why he'd done this in the first place.

"What happens now?" Kieran asked quietly.

Akira didn't have an answer. He'd crossed a line, entered a world he'd sworn to avoid, and there was no going back. Vincent knew who he was, what he could do, and that made him valuable. And in this world, valuable means dangerous.

"I don't know," he said finally. "But we'll figure it out. Together."

Dante's arm tightened around him. "Together," he agreed.

Kieran pressed a kiss to Akira's temple. "Always."

Akira let himself relax into their embrace, let himself be alive, just for a moment, that everything would be okay. But in the back of his mind, he knew the truth. He'd entered Vincent's world, and there was no easy way out. The only question was how deep he'd have to go before he found a way to escape.

Or if he even wanted to escape at all.
