Chapter Text
David was lighting a bong. Of course.
Gabe complained, obviously, but he wasn't all that upset with it. David acted adorably silly when he was high. It was sweet. Kind of. Gabe was still hesitant when it came to drugs and smoking, seeing as he grew up around them and knew what they could do to a person, but it wasn't any of his business what David did, really. That wasn't to say he wasn't a bit nervous. "Your mom is like, in the next room." David grinned proudly at that. "She's in denial, it's totally convenient." He took a hit, and the scent of the weed filled the room instantly. He held out the bong with pride, though his face fell slightly when Gabe shook his head. "I- I don't put anything into my mouth that's on fire." David shrugged. "I guess that's a good rule."
The room was beginning to grow so smokey that Gabe hardly even noticed when David tried to move his lips closer. He panicked, pulling away abruptly. "Look- I can't do this, not with my life. I'm like one fuck-up from disaster."
David sat up straight in his chair, seemingly unbothered by Gabe's sudden rejection. "Your life's not a disaster. The environment is a disaster, X is a disaster!" Oh no. David was high high. Gabe hadn't ever dealt with weed highs before, despite his experience with his mom. He felt a bit out of his depth. "You're stoned." He deadpanned, not exactly sure how else to respond to that.
"Really, our planet is poisoned! The oceans, the air... All around you!" He was getting progressively more animated by the second. Gabe sighed, silently deciding how to respond. "Um, David, that's true... And- I totally care-" David cut him off. "I'm trying to tell you I love you!" Gabe had to resist the urge to scream. What was he even meant to say to that? Was he meant to confess to him and risk his future (he wasn't sure that would really happen, but he was too paranoid to take any chances)? Was he meant to attempt to politely reject him and ruin their friendship? His thoughts were interrupted by David's continued rambling. "This world is at war! It's filled with death, and disease... global warming..." He babbled on, despite Gabe's increasing attempts to stop him. "Well, this is one fucked up seduction.." He murmured under his breath, quiet enough for David not to hear.
"Listen, this planet is broken beyond all repair!" David continued. "But- one thing is working..." He stuttered, stumbling over his words like he couldn't find them. "...If you're standing there." He smiled, looking sincere despite his baked state. "I promise, I could be perfect for you! I mean, I might be lazy, a loner... a bit of a stoner.." He mumbled that last part slightly shamefully. "But-! I'll make myself perfect! Perfect for you!"
Gabe groaned unsure if David was even being serious or if he was just too stoned to think straight. "You've got some nerve, David.." He didn't get to finish his sentence before David cut him off. "I know, but..." He huffed, like he couldn't figure out what to say. "Listen, I can't fix what's fucked up, but.. Like I said, I can be perfect for you." He grinned sheepishly. Gabe would've commented on the cheesiness of it all if it wasn't so endearing. He repeated the words softly under his breath, like he was running over them in his head. "I can be perfect for you..."
Before he knew it, he was kissing David. It was awkward. They were sitting on the floor, discarded schoolbooks all around them with the scent of weed sticking to their clothes. It was charming in it's own strange way. Gabe could admit he could get used to doing this.
"So," David was blushing when he pulled away (likely out of embarrassment). "Are you like, my boyfriend now?" Right. Still high and still so out of his mind that he had no filter.
They'd discuss the details later. Being together was all they needed for now.
