Chapter Text
"O God, the eternal father, bless that I may have a good day at school, and learn new things. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
Kohane stood from her spot at the foot of her bed. She grabbed her bag, and after exiting the house, made her way to school.
Along the way, her very good friend, An, joined her. "Hey Kohane!" The other girl said as she ran up to Kohane. "Good to see you!"
Kohane smiled, looking up at An. She could feel her heart flutter a little. "Hello! I hope you're having a good day today!"
An was absolutely stunning. The way her hair seemed to sparkle in the sun, how her gaze made Kohane feel weak...she was perfect. Kohane couldn't stop thinking about her.
If she was a guy, Kohane thought would have a huge crush on An. But she wasn't.
The two of them stopped in front of a crosswalk, waiting for the 'walking man', as Kohane liked to call it, to appear. When it did, she wasn't paying attention.
An grabbed Kohane's hand and walked her across the sidewalk. Kohane's cheeks turned red. An's hand was so soft. And warm. Her hold was firm, but not tight.
Her brain seemed to malfunction. All she could think about was how An's hand felt holding hers. She hadn't even noticed that they arrived at the school.
"Do you wanna get breakfast with me?" An asked, snapping Kohane out of her thoughts. Kohane nodded. "S-Sure! Sounds good."
When they finished going through the cafeteria line for breakfast, they found a free table in the back to sit at. Kohane sat so close that she could smell An's perfume. It smelled like warm vanilla.
"Kohane? Hello?" An waved a hand in front of Kohane. "You haven't touched your food. You okay?"
"Uh-" In a panic, Kohane quickly diverted the topic. "Do you want to learn about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?"
An shook her head. "Nah. I'm not all that religious," She said, before taking a sip of her chocolate milk. "No offense to your beliefs, of course."
"...Not religious?" An expression of confusion appeared on Kohane's face. "Why? The Lord wants us to follow and worship him."
An just shrugged. "I don't believe in it. None of the evidence is really good enough for me."
Kohane stared at An for a good, long minute. The concept of someone not believing in a God wasn't new to her, but it didn't make sense. The scriptures should be evidence enough. And the visions that had been recorded. Kohane had felt the Holy Ghost before, there's no way that could have been fake.
Finally, she responded. "Oh."
They didn't talk much after that. Kohane was lost in thought. She wanted to show An the scriptures. Maybe even invite her to church one day. But she was worried that she would come across as rude.
Aside from Toya and An, Kohane didn't have many friends. Without An, she'd be even more lonely.
"An," Kohane began. "...Would you like to come to one of the church activities? We're doing karaoke on Wednesday. It won't involve any scripture study or anything..."
An nodded. "Sounds fun! I'll see if my dad will let me." She winked. "Be warned, I'm a pretty damn good singer."
Kohane let out a breath she hadn't even realized she was holding. "Okay! I'd love to do a duet with you."
The bell for classes rang. The two girls said goodbyes to each other, and went to their first period.
While she was walking, Kohane imagined the karaoke session. Her, An, standing close so they can share the microphone...
She shook her head. Thinking about An shouldn't make her stomach feel so fluttery. No one had ever made her feel this way before.
This is what a good friendship was like, she assumed.
No other possible reasoning for that.
