Chapter 5: Sleepy Subway

Chapter Text

Gerard felt a warm body slump against his shoulder.

He looked down, smiling, at his boyfriend who had just drifted off to sleep against him on the New York to New Jersey subway. They’d spent the day in the city, walking around, eating crap food, just hanging out. He knew Frank loved it, but he also knew it could be a lot for his anxiety. Plus, his meds always made him drowsy at night, although that usually led to some great cuddles.

There were a few other people on the subway, even though it was roughly 10:00 P.M., one of them being a young girl, probably about seven years old, and a woman Gerard could only assume to be her mother.

The pink-clad girl kept sneaking glances at Gerard, who had his arm snaked around Frank’s side. He knew she would soon ask either him or her mother something about their relationship; it was probably the first time she’d seen a gay couple, anyways. He smiled warmly at her, to which she took a breath, opened her mouth and started.

“Hey, you’re Mr. Gerard Way, right? I saw you on the T.V. the other day!”

He smiled again, then nodded. That certainly wasn’t what he was expecting. He’d been on the news a few days prior due to the release of one of his new comic books.

“Yep, that’s me! Do you like reading comics?”

“Hmm, sort of.” She replied. “I like picture books. Is that similar?”

“Sure!” Gerard enthused. “I mean, it tells a story and has pictures, so yeah!”

She nodded, lost in thought. Then, she looked up and asked the million dollar question. “Who’s that with you? That you’re hugging?”

Gerard smiled and looked down at his sleeping partner, curled so delicately around him. He looked so small, so sweet while he was sleeping.

“This is Mr. Frank.” Gerard softly answered, so as not to wake him. Frank made a quiet, sleepy noise at the mention of his name, and he swore he could see the corner of his mouth twitch up.

“Mr. Frank is very important to me.”

The girl wrinkled her nose.

“He doesn’t look very important.”

Gerard lightly laughed. “Yeah, maybe not now, but if you get to meet him you’ll understand why. I love Mr. Frank very much. He even made me think to write a character in my new book!”

She nodded again, seriously lost in thought now. “Are you married to Mr. Frank?”

Gerard coughed, taken aback by the question, and laughed. “No, he’s my boyfriend. We’re dating.”

“Are you going to marry him?”

He laughed again. “I don’t know. Maybe. I do love him very much, though.”

“Cool.” She answered. Just then, the subway rolled to a stop. He shook Frank to wake him up.

“Frankie,” he whispered. “Frankie, time to go.”

Frank smiled, looking up at him, pure adoration in his eyes.

Wordlessly, he intertwined their hands and kissed Gerard, both of them smiling and stumbling out of the subway into the darkened night.

As the quiet folded around them, Frank started, “Y’know, I could hear all of that. I wasn’t actually asleep. I just wanted you to hold me.”

Gerard smiled. “All of it?”

Frank nodded. “All of it. Even the last part. Did you really mean that? The last part, I mean?”

“I mean, yeah, Frankie. I love you. And yeah, maybe we’ll get married someday. You never know.” He smiled again.

“Fuck, how did I get so lucky?” He mused.

“I ask myself that every day.” Gerard finished, kissing his boyfriend close.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too. Now let’s get you home.”
