Chapter 2: Next time?

Summary:

Megumi found himself smiling at the texts, a weird feeling in his chest.

He immediately turned off his phone, closing his eyes as he inhaled. ‘No need to be nervous,’ Megumi told himself, exhaling. ‘You’ve met him twice already, and you’re just grabbing coffee.’

Chapter Text

Megumi arrived home, opened the door, and placed his keys on the table. He grabbed his phone from his pocket, opened the ‘Messages’ app, and stared at Yuuji’s contact.

Should he text him? Or was it too soon?

He decided to go for a friendly and polite text, something that didn’t overdo it.

Megumi:
Hello, Itadori.

———

Okay, maybe that was dry. But that was the best he could do.

Several seconds later, his phone pinged.

Yuuji Itadoriii 😻💪:

hey fushigurooo!

Megumi:

Oh, i wasn’t expecting you to text back so fast.

Yuuji Itadoriii 😻💪:

I’m chronically online😼
Anyways, i have a good coffee shop that’s by the corner store.
We could go there, maybe tmw @ 11am?

Megumi:

Sounds good, see you then.

Yuuji Itadoriii 😻💪:

Heheeee alright!

He calmed himself down, walking into the kitchen. Gojo was in there, making cake.

“Don’t burn it this time.” Megumi retorted, putting his phone down on the dining room table.

“I won’t, Megs! Have more faith in your favorite guardian!” He joked, mixing the batter. “Anyways, I saw you smiling at your phone just now. Who are you texting?” he smirked knowingly.

Megumi’s breath caught in his throat. He immediately turned his head away, confirming Gojo’s suspicions.

“Oh so you ARE talking to someone?” Gojo snickered, a big goofy smile on his face.

“What does it matter to you?” Megumi was flushed, cheeks pink as heat crept up his neck. “Even if i was, i wouldn’t tell you.”

Gojo clutched his chest, feigning pain. “Oh, how dare you! I am wounded, Megs!” He mocked, hiding his smile.

“Shut it..” Megumi grumbled, rolling his eyes as he snatched his phone from the table, storming up the stairs.

“Megs?” Gojo called out, his playful tone fading.

“Hmm?”

“I’m here for you, in case of anything.” Gojo said, sincerely.

“Thanks..” Megumi replied, continuing up the stairs.

He decided to call his best friend, Nobara. She was kind of a pain in the ass sometimes, but she was the only one who truly understood him most of the time. Excluding his cousin, Maki, of course.

“Nobara, i need help.” He spoke into the phone when she picked up.

“With?” she said, giggling slightly.

“Gosh, is Maki there?” Megumi groaned, his hands running down his face.

“Yeah!” she squealed, and Megumi assumed Maki was tickling Nobara.

“Okay, okay, chill for a second. I need help with an outfit.” Megumi said, eyeing his closet.

“Oohh~ where are you going?” Maki teased, and Nobara giggled.

“I’m just going out for coffee with a…” he trailed off, getting lost in thought.

What were Megumi and Yuuji? Strangers? Friends? Acquaintances?

“a friend?” he hesitated, itching the top of his head.

Nobara and Maki had said something, but Megumi didn’t hear. “Okay, if it’s coffee.. wear that green sweater i bought you and those cute black jeans. Super casual and cute!” Nobara suggested.

“hmm, alright. Thanks and bye.” Megumi hung up before they could say something humiliating. He pulled the outfit out from his closet and set it on his desk, preparing it for the next day.

In the morning, he gets ready. Brushing his teeth, showering, and styling his hair.

He went to his room and changed, glancing at himself in the mirror. “Not bad” he mumbled to himself, straightening and adjusting the clothing.

—————

He arrived 10 minutes early, sitting at a table as he waited for Yuuji, not wanting to order without him.

He arrived 13 minutes late. He rushed in and looked for Megumi, and when his eyes landed on him, they lit up.

“Fushiguro! I’m so sorry for the wait, I was helping two elders cross the street. They were… really slow.” He admitted sheepishly, looking guilty.

“It’s okay. I was waiting for you.” Megumi said smoothly, glad he sounded normal.

“Oh, you didn’t order?” Yuuji asked, tilting his head slightly. “I’m really sorry, actually. Whatever you order, i’ll pay.”

“No, you don’t need to do that. I’ll pay.” Megumi insisted, shrugging his shoulders.

“No, i’m going to pay. I feel bad for the wait. You can pay next time.” Yuuji said, smiling.

Next time? Was there going to be a next time..? He was too lost in thought to realize that the waiter had come.

“Hello, what drinks?” She asked politely, snapping him back to reality.

“I want… an iced coffee please?” Yuuji said, a small smile on his lips. “What about you Fushiguro?”

“Black coffee.” Megumi said calmly, reaching for his wallet out of instinct.

Yuuji grabbed Megumi’s wrist firmly, but gently. His touch was soft against Megumi’s wrist. “I told you i’d pay!” Yuuji reassured, smiling.

Megumi put his hand down, nodding once. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it.”

———

Their drinks arrived around 3 minutes later. They came pretty quickly, but to be fair, the shop was empty.

Megumi sipped his coffee, letting the warmth fill his throat as he sighed softly. “How do you even like that? It’s so plain.” Yuuji asked, sipping his iced coffee.

“It’s just something i’m used to, i guess. I like the bitterness of it.” Megumi replied, putting his coffee down.

“Iced coffee is better, it’s simple, but it has a sweet taste!” Yuuji argued, grinning.

“Sweeter doesn’t necessarily mean better.” Megumi countered.

They were lost in conversation, sitting there for hours as they spoke. Well, Yuuji did enough talking for both of them. But Megumi liked listening to how compassionate and confident Yuuji was about the things he enjoyed and loved doing.

Around 2 hours of talking later, they decided to leave. They were walking down the sidewalk, avoiding bumping into people. They were still talking and bumping shoulders occasionally when they tried not to run into others.

“Thanks for this, Itadori. It was really fun.” Megumi said, a small smile forming on his lips.

“I’m glad you thought so. Maybe we can do it again sometime?” Yuuji asked hesitantly, as if afraid of a rejection. What a crazy thought.

“I’d be glad to.” Megumi answered. Yuuji exhaled a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“Oh okay! Alright!! See you then.. or sooner— you know cause you go to the corner store! I’ll text you!” Yuuji rambled, smiling before he turned to leave.

Megumi turned the opposite way, heading to his house. How had he, of all people, befriended such a ray of sunshine?
