Part Four: The Clans
___________________________________
The news of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's courtship spread through the bunny world like wildfire. Two of the most powerful bunny clans, united through love it was the stuff of legend.
Wei Wuxian's mother, Cangse Sanren, was overjoyed. "The Lan Clan!" she exclaimed, bouncing around the Warren of Eternal Spring. "They're so elegant! So refined! And that beautiful white fur- our grandchildren will be absolutely stunning!"
Wei Changze, ever practical, nodded thoughtfully. "The Lan Clan controls the mountain territories. An alliance would be beneficial for both families. And their reputation for wisdom and grace would balance our... enthusiasm."
"Our enthusiasm is a good thing!" Wei Wuxian protested. "I'm not enthusiastic, I'm vibrant!"
"You are exhausting," his father replied, but there was affection in his eyes. "But the Lan Wangji seems like a good bunny. He'll keep you grounded."
Meanwhile, in the Cloud Warrens, Lan Wangji's family was having their own discussion.
"He's from a good clan," Lan Xichen said diplomatically. "The Wei family is powerful, respected, and their warren is well-maintained."
"He talks too much," Lan Wangji's father, Qingheng-Jun, observed. "He's too loud. Too energetic. Too... everything."
Lan Wangji's ears drooped. "Father..."
"But," Qingheng-Jun continued, a rare smile appearing on his regal face, "he makes you happy. I have never seen you smile as often as you have since you met him. And his family is honorable. The union would bring strength to both our clans."
Lan Wangji felt a surge of hope. "Then you approve?"
"I approve," his father said. "But he must adhere to our traditions. No loud noises during the quiet hours. No wild behavior in the formal chambers. And he must learn to be still."
Lan Wangji nodded solemnly. "I will teach him. Eventually."
Part Five: The Mating Season
____________________________________________
The mating season arrived with the first bloom of spring flowers, and Wei Wuxian was beside himself with excitement.
"Little cloud!" he exclaimed, bounding into the meadow where Lan Wangji was waiting. "The season is here! The great season! The—"
"Wei Wuxian," Lan Wangji said calmly, "please. Breathe."
"I can't breathe! I'm too happy!" Wei Wuxian flopped down beside him, pressing his warm body against Lan Wangji's cool white fur. "Soon we'll be bonded, and we'll have a nest together, and I can bring you flowers every single day—"
"Flowers would be nice," Lan Wangji admitted, a soft blush coloring his cheeks.
The bonding ceremony was beautiful. Both clans gathered in the meadow, their fur groomed to perfection, their whiskers neatly trimmed. Wei Wuxian wore a small crown of wildflowers, and Lan Wangji wore his silver ribbon.
The High Elder of all bunny kind officiated, calling upon the spirits of the meadow to bless the union. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji performed the traditional bonding dance hopping in perfect synchronicity, their bodies moving together as one.
Then came the exchange of gifts. Wei Wuxian presented Lan Wangji with a necklace made of the finest clover chain, a testament to his love. Lan Wangji gave Wei Wuxian a tiny bell, beautifully crafted, that jingled softly whenever he moved.
"So you will never be lost," Lan Wangji explained quietly. "I will always hear you coming."
"I'm never lost when I'm with you," Wei Wuxian replied, pressing his nose against Lan Wangji's. "I'm home."
Part Six: The Pregnancy
___________________________________________
The first signs were subtle. Lan Wangji became more tired than usual. He started sleeping longer, and his appetite changed he craved certain types of clover and avoided others.
Then came the nesting.
"Wei Wuxian," Lan Wangji said one morning, his voice unusually firm. "We need more soft grass. The good kind, from the south side of the meadow. And I need the white dandelion fluff, the fresh one, not the old one."
Wei Wuxian, who had been lounging lazily, shot to his feet. "Little cloud? Are you—?"
"I think," Lan Wangji said softly, his paw resting on his slightly rounded belly, "we are going to have babies."
Wei Wuxian's reaction was immediate and explosive. He binkied so high he nearly hit the top of the warren. He raced around the nesting chamber three times, his tail bobbing frantically. Then he skidded to a stop in front of Lan Wangji and pressed his nose against his mate's.
"Babies!" he squeaked. "Our babies! Little hopping, nibbling, adorable babies!"
"Small," Lan Wangji agreed, a tiny smile on his face. "Very small. We must prepare the nest properly."
The next few weeks were a blur of activity. Wei Wuxian brought everything Lan Wangji requested and more. He built the most beautiful nest ever seen in the Cloud Warrens a perfect circle of soft grass, lined with the finest dandelion fluff, and surrounded by the prettiest flowers Wei Wuxian could find.
Lan Wangji's pregnancy progressed smoothly, though he grew increasingly uncomfortable as his body prepared to bring new life into the world. Wei Wuxian was constantly by his side, grooming his fur, bringing him food, and telling him silly stories.
"Remember the frog?" Wei Wuxian asked one evening, his voice soft. "The one who thought he was a dragon?"
"I remember," Lan Wangji murmured, his eyes half-closed in contentment.
"I was thinking," Wei Wuxian continued, grooming the soft white fur behind Lan Wangji's ears, "we could tell our kits that story. And all the other stories. And they'll be the happiest little bunnies in the whole bunny world."
Lan Wangji opened his eyes and looked at his mate. "They will have your spirit," he said. "And my... my devotion."
"They'll be perfect," Wei Wuxian said fiercely. "Just like their parents."
Part Seven: The Birth
_______________________________________
The night of the birth was moonlit and peaceful. Lan Wangji had been restless all day, his body preparing for the arrival of their kits. Wei Wuxian had been banished to the outer chamber, though he kept sticking his head through the entrance.
"How are you feeling, little cloud?" he asked for the hundredth time.
"Go away," Lan Wangji growled, his voice strained. "Or I will bite you."
Wei Wuxian's ears drooped, but he retreated. He couldn't help it he was so worried! He paced back and forth, his paws making tiny impressions in the soft earth.
What if something went wrong? What if Lan Wangji was in too much pain? What if the babies—
Then came the sounds. Tiny, squeaking sounds. The most beautiful sounds in the entire world.
"Wei Wuxian," Lan Xichen called from inside the chamber. "You may come in now."
Wei Wuxian burst through the entrance and stopped dead.
There, nestled against Lan Wangji's white chest, were three tiny bundles of fur. Three pairs of closed eyes, three little noses twitching, three sets of ears too big for their heads.
One kit was a perfect grey-brown, just like Wei Wuxian. The other two were pure white, like their other father.
"Oh," Wei Wuxian breathed, his eyes filling with tears. "Oh, little cloud. They're beautiful."
Lan Wangji looked exhausted but radiant. His grey eyes were soft with love and pride.
"We have three," he whispered. "Three perfect kits."
Wei Wuxian approached slowly, reverently, and lay down beside his mate. He gently groomed Lan Wangji's tired face and then turned his attention to the tiny bundles.
The grey kit was the first to open her eyes dark, sparkling eyes just like Wei Wuxian's. She immediately began squirming, searching for her fathers.
"Hello, little one," Wei Wuxian murmured. "You're going to be trouble. I can already tell."
The two white kits were calmer, more like their Lan father. They nestled contentedly against Lan Wangji, their tiny paws kneading his fur.
"They need names," Lan Wangji said softly.
Wei Wuxian nodded. "The grey one will be A-Yuan. And the white ones..." He paused, thinking. "A-Lan and A-Wei. One for each of us."
"Perfect," Lan Wangji agreed.
And so the Wei-Lan family grew. A-Yuan, the energetic grey kit who inherited her father's mischief. A-Lan, the serene white kit who was the picture of her other father's dignity. And A-Wei, the cuddly white kit who loved nothing more than to be held by both her parents.
Part Eight: The Happy Ever After
_____________________________________________
The Cloud Warrens had never known such joy. The tiny nursery chamber was filled with the sounds of happy squeaks and gentle laughter. Three kits tumbled over each other, their little ears flopping and their tails bobbing.
"Come here, A-Yuan!" Wei Wuxian called, chasing his grey daughter through the chamber. "I'm going to get you!"
"No, Papa!" A-Yuan squealed, darting behind Lan Wangji. "Baba, protect me!"
Lan Wangji, sitting serenely in the corner, allowed his daughter to hide behind him. "Wei Wuxian, please. You will disturb the quiet hours."
"There are no quiet hours with three kits!" Wei Wuxian protested, but he was grinning. "That's what makes it fun!"
A-Lan and A-Wei, the two white kits, were more interested in the flower arrangement their father had created. They hopped around it, their little noses twitching.
"Beautiful," A-Lan pronounced.
"Pretty," A-Wei agreed.
"They get their appreciation for beauty from you," Wei Wuxian said, hopping over to nuzzle his mate. "And their excitement from me."
"Yuan gets too much excitement from you," Lan Wangji observed, but there was no real complaint in his voice. He leaned into his mate's touch, his grey eyes soft.
Their families visited often. Grandfather Wei Changze would come to tell stories about the great bunny heroes of old, his voice warm and booming. Grandmother Cangse Sanren would bring special treats sweet clover and the most tender grass.
Uncle Lan Xichen was a frequent visitor, his gentle nature making him the favorite uncle. He would sit for hours with the kits, teaching them the proper way to groom their fur and the important etiquette of bunny society.
"You must always greet elders with a bow," he instructed the three kits, who were arranged in a neat row before him. "And you must never interrupt when someone is speaking."
A-Yuan's ear twitched. "But what if I have something very important to say?"
"You wait," Lan Xichen said patiently. "Your turn will come."
"I don't like waiting," A-Yuan declared, earning a gentle laugh from her uncle.
As the kits grew older, their personalities became more distinct. A-Yuan was the adventurer, always exploring and getting into trouble. A-Lan was the scholar, preferring to listen to stories and observe the world around her. A-Wei was the peacemaker, her gentle nature calming her siblings' squabbles.
One evening, after the kits had been put to bed, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji sat together on the balcony of the Cloud Warrens, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of pink and gold.
Wei Wuxian pressed his nose against his mate's. "Thank you," he whispered.
"For what?" Lan Wangji asked.
"For everything," Wei Wuxian said. "For the kits. For loving me. For staying with me even though I'm loud and ridiculous and I never stop talking."
Lan Wangji's grey eyes softened. "There is no one else I would want," he said simply. "You are my wind. Without you, I would be a cloud frozen in place."
Wei Wuxian's heart overflowed with love. "And you are my calm," he replied. "You keep me grounded. You make me want to be better."
They sat together in companionable silence, their bodies pressed close, watching the stars begin to appear in the sky.
"Papa! Baba!" came a tiny call from the nursery. "We want a story!"
"Coming, little ones!" Wei Wuxian called back, hopping to his feet. He looked down at his mate, his eyes sparkling. "Ready for another adventure?"
Lan Wangji rose gracefully, his white fur gleaming in the fading light. "Always," he said. "As long as I am with you."
And so they hopped together to the nursery, where their three beautiful kits were waiting. The lanterns of the Cloud Warrens glowed warmly around them, and outside, the night was full of stars like the promise of all the wonderful days yet to come.
The Wei-Lan family had grown, and their love had spread like the most beautiful wildflower in the meadow. In the great bunny world, their story would be told for generations the tale of the brave grey bunny and his beautiful white cloud, and how love had brought them together against all odds.
