Chapter 14: THE NEW NORMAL

Chapter Text

The reunion had been a beautiful reminder of everything they had built together. But as the guests departed and the house returned to its usual quiet chaos, Joong and Dunk settled back into their daily rhythm. The new normal wasn't always exciting, but it was filled with small moments of joy that made their hearts swell.

The Morning Routine

The sun streamed through the curtains, casting golden light across the bedroom. Dunk stirred first, his eyes fluttering open to find Joong still asleep beside him. He smiled, watching his husband's peaceful face, the way his lips curved slightly even in sleep.

Then came the familiar sound—the pitter-patter of tiny feet in the hallway.

"Daddy! Papa! I'm awake!" Jaidee's voice rang out, followed by the thud of her small body against their bedroom door.

"Come in, baby," Dunk called out, his voice still thick with sleep.

The door burst open, and Jaidee bounded in, her hair a wild mess, her teddy bear clutched to her chest. "Good morning! I'm hungry! I want pancakes!"

"Pancakes?" Joong mumbled, cracking one eye open. "It's too early for pancakes."

"It's never too early for pancakes!" Jaidee declared, climbing onto the bed and bouncing on her knees. "Pancakes!

Pancakes! Pancakes!"

Dunk laughed, pulling her into a hug. "Okay, okay! I'll make pancakes. But you have to be quiet. Dao is still sleeping."

"Dao is a sleepyhead," Jaidee said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "He sleeps all the time."

"He's still little," Dunk said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "He needs his rest."

"I'm going to wake him up," Jaidee announced, already scrambling off the bed.

"Jaidee, wait—" Joong started, but she was already gone, her footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Dunk sighed, shaking his head. "I guess we're all awake now."

"It's going to be a long day," Joong said, but he was smiling. "A wonderful, chaotic, beautiful long day."

The kitchen was a flurry of activity. Dunk was at the stove, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. Joong was pouring juice and setting the table. And Jaidee was trying to "help" Dao eat his breakfast.

"Dao, you have to eat your cereal," Jaidee instructed, holding up a spoon. "It's good for you. It makes you grow big and strong."

Dao, who was more interested in playing with his food than eating it, banged his spoon on the high chair tray. "No like cereal!"

"You have to try it!" Jaidee insisted. "Daddy made it special for you!"

"Jaidee, let him eat at his own pace," Dunk said gently. "He'll eat when he's ready."

"But I'm his big sister!" Jaidee protested. "I have to make sure he eats!"

Dunk hid a smile. "You're very good at taking care of him. But sometimes, you have to let him figure things out on his own."

Jaidee considered this, her brow furrowed. "Okay," she finally said. "But I'm going to watch him. Just in case."

Dunk and Joong exchanged glances, their hearts full. Their daughter was so fiercely protective of her brother, so determined to be the best big sister possible. It was a trait they admired, even when it made breakfast a little chaotic.

After breakfast, the family moved to the playroom. Toys were scattered everywhere—blocks, dolls, stuffed animals, and the ever-present train set that Jaidee had recently become obsessed with.

"Dao, I'm going to build a castle!" Jaidee announced. "You can help me!"

Dao toddled over, his steps unsteady but determined. "Help!" he echoed, grabbing a handful of blocks.

"No, Dao! Not like that!" Jaidee said, gently taking the blocks from him. "You have to stack them. Like this." She demonstrated, carefully placing one block on top of another.

Dao watched intently, his little face scrunched up in concentration. Then he grabbed another block and tried to copy her, his movements clumsy but determined.

"Good job, Dao!" Jaidee praised. "You're doing it!"

Dao's face broke into a grin. "I doing it!"

"Yes, you are!" Dunk said, watching from the doorway. "You're both doing such a great job."

Joong came up behind him, wrapping his arms around Dunk's waist. "Look at them. They're building something together."

"They are," Dunk said, his voice soft. "They're building a bond that will last a lifetime."

"I hope so," Joong said. "I really hope so."

"They will," Dunk said confidently. "I know they will."

The weather was beautiful, warm and sunny with a gentle breeze. Joong and Dunk decided to take the children to the park, packing a picnic lunch and loading the stroller with supplies.

"I want to go on the swings!" Jaidee announced, running ahead. "And the slide! And the monkey bars!"

"Slow down, baby!" Dunk called after her. "We'll get to all of it!"

Dao was in the stroller, his eyes wide with excitement. "Park! Park!" he chanted, bouncing in his seat.

"Yes, baby," Joong said, laughing. "We're going to the park."

The park was bustling with families, children running and laughing. Jaidee immediately made a beeline for the swings, her energy boundless. Joong pushed her, her laughter filling the air.

"Higher, Papa!" she shrieked. "Higher!"

"Any higher and you'll fly away!" Joong called back.

"I want to fly!" Jaidee declared. "I want to be a bird!"

Dunk sat on a bench with Dao, watching his family. The sun was warm on his skin, the sounds of children playing filling the air. It was a perfect day, a perfect moment.

"Daddy, I want to swing too," Dao said, tugging on Dunk's sleeve.

"You're too small for the big swings, baby," Dunk said gently. "But there's a baby swing over there. Would you like to try that?"

Dao nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Yes!"

Dunk carried him to the baby swing, carefully settling him in. Dao's face lit up as Dunk pushed him gently, his giggles filling the air.

"Good boy, Dao!" Joong called out, still pushing Jaidee. "You're doing great!"

"I like swings!" Dao announced.

"I'm glad you do, baby," Dunk said, his heart full.

Bath time was always an adventure. Jaidee loved it, splashing and playing with her bath toys. Dao, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic. He would cling to Dunk, his little face scrunched up in protest.

"No bath!" he would cry. "No bath!"

"Dao, you have to take a bath," Dunk would say, trying to reason with him. "You're all dirty from the park."

"No bath!" Dao would insist, his voice rising to a wail.

Jaidee, ever the helpful big sister, would try to coax him. "Dao, baths are fun! Look at my duck!" She held up a rubber duck, squeezing it to make it squeak.

Dao's protests would quiet as he watched the duck, his curiosity piqued.

"See?" Jaidee would say. "It's fun!"

Eventually, Dunk would manage to get Dao into the tub, where he would sit, still suspicious, but slowly warming up to the water.

"I don't like bath," Dao would say, his voice small.

"I know, baby," Dunk would say, gently washing his hair. "But you have to be clean. And see? Phi Jaidee is here. She's making it fun."

Jaidee would splash him gently, making him giggle despite himself.

"Bath is okay," Dao would finally admit. "Just a little."

Dunk would smile, his heart full. Progress, even if it was small.

The children were finally clean, dressed in their pajamas, and ready for bed. Jaidee and Dao snuggled up in Jaidee's bed, their eyes heavy with exhaustion.

"Story time!" Jaidee announced. "I want the one about the princess and the dragon!"

"I want the one about the elephant," Dao said, his voice sleepy. "The elephant is my favorite."

"Elephants are okay," Jaidee said, "but dragons are better."

"Dragons are scary," Dao said, his voice trembling. "I don't like dragons."

"Don't worry, Dao," Jaidee said, patting his head. "I'll protect you from the dragons. I'm your big sister."

Dunk and Joong exchanged glances, their hearts melting.

"How about a story about a friendly dragon?" Joong suggested. "One who helps people?"

"Okay," Dao said, his eyes brightening. "I like friendly dragons."

They settled in, Joong reading the story while Dunk watched from the doorway. The children's eyes grew heavy, their breathing slowing as the story progressed.

"The dragon flew through the sky, his scales shimmering in the moonlight," Joong read. "He was looking for friends, for someone to share his adventures with. And then, he saw them—a princess and a little boy, playing in the garden. He knew, right away, that they would be his friends forever."

"Like me and Dao," Jaidee murmured, her voice sleepy. "We're friends forever."

"Yes, baby," Joong said softly. "Just like you and Dao."

By the time the story ended, the children were fast asleep, curled up together in a tangle of limbs and blankets.

Dunk stepped forward, gently pulling the covers up to their chins. He pressed a kiss to each forehead, his heart full to bursting.

"They're perfect," he whispered to Joong. "Absolutely perfect."

"They are," Joong agreed. "And they're ours."

After the children were asleep, the house was quiet, and Joong and Dunk finally had a moment to themselves. They sat on the couch, their bodies close, a glass of wine between them.

"I can't believe how lucky we are," Dunk said, his voice soft. "Every day, I look at our family, and I can't believe it's real."

"It's real," Joong said, pulling him close. "And it's beautiful."

"I love our new normal," Dunk said. "The chaos, the laughter, the small moments. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

"Me neither," Joong agreed. "This is everything I ever wanted."

They sat in comfortable silence, their hearts full. The journey had been long and difficult, but it had brought them here—to this moment, to this family, to this love.

"Thank you," Dunk whispered. "For everything."

"Thank you," Joong replied. "For being my partner in all of this."

Dunk leaned up and kissed him, soft and sweet. "I love you."

"I love you too," Joong said. "Forever."

The End.
