A Recipe for Disaster

Chapter 22: The Chaos Catering Order and The "Dozen" Kids

Chapter Text

Exactly one month after the infamous "Great Starfish Incident," the marble prep counter of Patisserie du Ciel looked less like an artisan pastry station and more like a high-grade military tactical room under siege.

Order sheets were pinned to every overhead hook. Dozens of commercial sheet pans lined the stainless steel racks. And sitting squarely in the middle of the island was a giant, color-coded binder marked with a bright red label: SHIBUYA HIGH-SOCIETY CATERING: SEVENTH BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA.

One hundred and fifty pastel-themed vanilla cupcakes. One hundred animal-shape cake pops. Sixty mini strawberry tartlets. A three-tiered customized cake.

You leaned against the edge of the island, a hand pressed against your forehead, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. When the prominent Minato family dropped this short-notice, lucrative contract for their daughter’s seventh birthday bash, you had grossly underestimated the sheer physical labor required for four hundred individually decorated confectioneries.

"Need a hand, baker-chan?"

Gojo strolled out of the back kitchen corridor, looking entirely too refreshed for seven o'clock on a Sunday morning. He was wearing an absurdly tall, white professional chef’s hat, standing at least eighteen inches high, perched precariously atop his messy white hair, paired with his dark round-frame glasses and a pristine beige baking apron over a casual blue button-down shirt.

"Satoru," you murmured, eyeing his tall hat with fond exasperation, holding firmly to your professional boundaries despite the fond smile tugging at your lips. "Where did you even buy that?"

"I ordered it online at three in the morning," Gojo declared proudly, puffing out his broad chest and resting his hands on his hips. "A head chef requires authoritative headwear. Now, give me my assignment. I am prepared to revolutionize the pastry industry once again."

"Absolutely not. You know the rules," you said firmly, picking up your clipboard and tapping it with a pen. "You are banned from the fondant. You are banned from the sugar paste. You are banned from anything that can be sculpted, molded, or turned into a sea creature with teeth."

"You hold grudges, baker-chan," he sighed tragically.

"And since I physically cannot pipe one hundred and fifty buttercream roses before eleven in the morning by myself, I had to bring in reinforcements."

Right on cue, the backdoor burst open.

"Reporting for pastry duty!" Yuji shouted cheerfully, marching into the kitchen wearing a bright red apron over his hoodie.

Behind him marched Nobara, tying a matching bandana over her brown hair with terrifying, laser-focused determination. Bringing up the rear was Megumi, who looked as though he were walking voluntarily towards a firing squad, a dark blue apron slung loosely over his shoulders.

"We have arrived!" Nobara declared, clapping her hands together with a fierce grin. "Kugisaki Nobara, elite cupcake decorator, reporting! Where are the sprinkles?!"

"Why am I here again?" Megumi groaned under his breath, staring blankly at the massive stacks of metal sheet pans. "I was supposed to have conditioning practice today."

"Because track conditioning doesn't come with free raspberry tartlets, Fushiguro," Yuji said, slapping his friend on the back so hard Megumi nearly stumbled into a flour bin. "Besides, helping out the bakery is top priority!"

You smiled warmly at the three teenagers, feeling an immense wave of relief wash over you. "Thank you so much, you guys. Satoru promised you all unlimited pastries for a month if we finish this order on time."

"He what?!" Gojo gasped loudly, placing a hand over his heart in mock betrayal. "That's my inheritance you're giving away!"

"You don't even pay for your own coffee here, Gojo-sensei!" Nobara snapped, pointing a wooden spoon at him. "Shut up and pass the piping bags!"

For the next two hours, the quiet, methodical kitchen of the bakery devolved into glorious, organized chaos.

Yuji proved to be a surprisingly natural baker. His fine motor control was exceptional, his hands moving with fluid, steady precision as he dipped cake pops into pastel-pink chocolate glaze.

Nobara took charge of the edible glitter and sugar pearls, treating each cupcake like an intricate canvas, muttering words of intense aesthetic judgment under her breath.

Megumi was assigned to the heavy assembly line, stacking baked tart shells and organizing the cooling racks. Despite his perpetual scowl, he worked with silent, precise efficiency.

And then, there was Gojo.

Since he was strictly forbidden from touching the fondant, he had decided that piping buttercream was an extreme sport requiring maximum flair. He stood at the center island, taking a filled pastry bag and spinning it around his fingers like a trick revolver before squeezing massive, impossibly perfect rosettes onto the cupcakes at blinding speeds.

"Observe!" Gojo announced grandly, striking a dramatic pose as he finished a tray of twenty cupcakes in under five seconds. "The artistic genius of Gojo Satoru! Smooth, effortless, perfection!"

"Gojo-sensei, half of that buttercream is on your cheek," Megumi deadpanned, without even looking up from his trays.

"It's a beauty mark, Megumi," Gojo replied blithely, immediately using his thumb to scoop off a dollop of vanilla frosting and popping it straight into his mouth. "Mm! Premium quality test!"

"Satoru! Stop eating the inventory!" you scolded warmly, gently swatting his arm with a dish towel as you passed by.

By ten-thirty, the entire catering order was packed into temperature-controlled travel crates near the front café.

Just as you were wiping down the counter, the front door chimed.

A woman in her late thirties walked in, dressed impeccably in a tailored cream-colored linen suit. Behind her, a little girl in a ruffled pink birthday dress peeked out from behind her mother's skirt.

"Excuse me!" the woman called out in a sharp, refined accent. "Is this Patisserie du Ciel? We are here for the Minato family order!"

"Ah, yes! Welcome!" you called out brightly, coming out from behind the counter. "Mrs. Minato, right? Everything is packed, chilled, and ready for transport!"

Gojo strolled out right behind you, his tall chef’s hat still perched proudly on his head. He leaned casually against the side of the marble counter, stepping right into your space and resting a warm, large hand comfortably over your shoulder. You instinctively stiffened slightly at the close contact, still trying to maintain your "Gojo-san" boundaries in front of a high-paying client, but you didn't pull away.

Mrs. Minato paused, her eyes sweeping over the two of you.

She took in your warm, flour-dusted apron, the affectionate way Gojo’s hand rested on your shoulder, his towering, handsome presence, and the sheer volume of immaculate pastries. A bright, admiring smile spread across her face.

"Oh, my goodness," Mrs. Minato clasped her hands together, looking between you and Gojo with pure delight. "What a breathtakingly charming local business! And you two must be the owners!"

"Ah—well, I am the head baker, and Gojo-san is—" you started to explain politely.

"We run the place together!" Gojo interrupted smoothly, flashing a dazzling, pearly-white smile. "I provide the stunning good looks, the culinary genius, and the executive leadership, while my lovely partner here keeps me from burning the building down!"

You felt a bright, sudden heat rise up your cheeks at his shameless declaration, gently nudging his ribs with your elbow.

"Oh, it is so rare to see a young, adorable couple running a family establishment with such passion these days!" Mrs. Minato swooned. She looked at you with deep, maternal admiration. "And you both look so wonderfully synchronized! Tell me... do you have any children yet?"

You froze, your face instantly turning bright crimson. "O-Oh! No, we're actually not—"

Gojo’s lips curved into an absolute, wicked, wolfish smirk.

He slid his arm all the way around your waist, pulling you flush against his side, erasing any professional boundaries you were trying to uphold, and leaned down towards Mrs. Minato with deadpan, absolute confidence.

"Not yet, ma'am," Gojo announced loudly, his deep voice carrying straight into the back kitchen where the teenagers were washing up. "But we’re planning on having at least a dozen."

CLANG! CRASH! BANG!

The sound of three metal sheet pans hitting the tile floor echoed from the back prep room like a sudden artillery shell.

Yuji poked his head out from behind the kitchen door, his mouth stretched open so wide his jaw practically touched his neck, staring at Gojo in complete, unadulterated terror.

Behind him, Nobara dropped a handful of metal spatulas onto the counter, grabbing her own hair. "A DOZEN?!" she screeched in a harsh whisper. "IS HE OUT OF HIS MIND?!"

Megumi stood frozen near the sink, looking as though his entire soul had just exited his body. "A dozen..." Megumi repeated under his breath, going completely pale. "There are going to be twelve of him...?"

You buried your face directly into your hands, letting out a quiet, stifled groan. "Satoru..." you squeaked through your fingers.

"A dozen!" Mrs. Minato gasped in delight, oblivious to the psychological horror unfolding in the kitchen. "How ambitious! Such a big, lively family! Well, a handsome man like you and a gorgeous woman like your wife will certainly have beautiful children!"

"W-Wife—!" you squeaked again, your voice rising an octave.

"We will try our best," Gojo preened smugly, patting your side gently while shooting a sly, triumphant glance towards the back kitchen.

Suddenly, a strange, faint metallic clicking sound echoed from the front corner of the café.

Near the entrance, a small decorative bronze clock began to twitch subtly. To an ordinary person, it was just a strange mechanical glitch. But to Gojo, the subtle shift in atmospheric density meant a lingering cursed spirit was drifting by the street outside.

Without breaking his charming smile, he casually reached out with one long arm, grabbing a small, round digital baking timer from the marble counter.

"Ah!" Gojo exclaimed brightly, stepping between you and the twitching clock, completely blocking your view. "Look at that! The specialized cake-decay timer is going off!"

You peeked out from behind your hands, blinking up at him. "The... what timer?"

"The specialized cake-decay residual detector!" Gojo lied with absolute, brazen authority, pressing a button on the plastic timer until it let out a loud BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. "It measures the precise humidity and sugar stabilization in the air! Very complex scientific stuff, baker-chan!"

Behind his back, Gojo casually flicked two fingers.

A microscopic, invisible pulse of cursed energy snapped through the air, striking the decorative clock near the window. The lingering residual cursed energy was instantly obliterated. The clock's minute hand settled back into a normal rhythm.

Mrs. Minato blinked, looking thoroughly impressed. "My! Baking technology has become so advanced!"

"Only the best for Patisserie du Ciel," Gojo declared, proudly sliding the catering crates onto the delivery cart.

Ten minutes later, the delivery van pulled away from the curb, leaving the front café quiet once more.

You stood near the central counter, trying desperately to fan your flushed cheeks with a paper napkin. The back kitchen door slowly swung open.

Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara crept out like three wary soldiers.

"Gojo-sensei," Nobara demanded, pointing her spoon accusingly. "What was that back there?! Are you trying to start a sports team?!"

"I am planning for the future, Kugisaki!" Gojo replied cheerfully, sliding his tall chef's hat off his head. "Twelve little geniuses running around, driving Megumi crazy!"

"Do not involve me in your hypothetical family planning," Megumi snapped, rubbing his temples. "I suffer enough with just one of you."

"I think it's sweet!" Yuji beamed. "A dozen kids means we get to be uncles and aunts!"

"I am not an aunt to twelve Gojo mini-mes!" Nobara shrieked.

You couldn't help it. Looking at the bickering teenagers and Gojo's smug grin, a soft, breathless laugh finally escaped your lips.

You walked over to the counter, grabbing a large wooden platter heaped high with warm, freshly baked cinnamon rolls and sea-salt croissants that hadn't been part of the catering order.

"Alright, settle down, everyone," you chuckled warmly, setting the overflowing platter down right in the middle of the large corner booth. "The kitchen is clean, and you three worked incredibly hard today."

The three first-years instantly went dead silent.

"Fresh from the oven," you smiled softly. "Help yourselves. You earned it."

Within two seconds, the booth was transformed into a joyous feeding frenzy. Gojo slid into the booth beside you, resting his long arm over the back of your seat. He reached over, casually pinching a small piece of cinnamon roll from your plate.

"See?" Gojo whispered close to your ear, his breath warm against your skin, his blue eyes sparkling with silent, unspoken affection behind his glasses. "We make a pretty great team, baker-chan."

You turned your head, looking at his handsome, playful face. Despite your best efforts to keep things professional and refer to him as 'Gojo-san,' the warmth blooming in your chest made those boundaries feel wonderfully insignificant.

"Yeah," you murmured softly, a sweet, lingering smile gracing your lips as you leaned ever so slightly into his space. "We really do."

END OF CHAPTER XXII

Notes:

A little fun fact about this story:
A Recipe for Disaster was born while I was listening to Yuya Matsushita’s “See You” and “Kimi Heno Love Song - Jyunensakimo -”. Those two beautiful ballads really set the emotional tone that inspired this fic from the very beginning.

Even now, I still put them on repeat whenever I’m writing the next chapters. Somehow, they always help me find the right mood and emotions for the story.

If you’re looking for something to listen to while reading, I highly recommend giving them a try. They’re wonderful songs.
