Chapter Text
The next day Jack was the first one to the kitchen and grabbed a sponge to snack on while he made food for himself, a little while later Dazzle walked in followed by TJ and all three of them ate their toast at the counter. Then they went up to their rooms get ready for their first patrol in three weeks, it was around 5 am and they were the only ones up so both TJ and Jack walked to Dazzles room.
When Dazzle opened the door she was already dressed and just putting her mask on as TJ just finished editing them out of the security cameras, they all walked into her room as TJ summoned a portal and they walked through on to the roof of a building.
Despite it being early morning people were already up but that wasn’t what caught Hallow Hunters eye, it was a billboard with a photo of them running on the roof tops with the text beneath it saying “PROTECTORS OR PREDATORS? Whose side are they really on?”
Hallow Hunter just stood there dumbstruck until he regained his awareness and tapped Fauna Fury and Cosmic Carnage on their shoulders and pointed to it and then they remembered why they did it.
Three years ago the three of them had a friend named Nestor and he was a bright and happy kid until they were walking to the park together and some random villain called Vortex was being chased by some hero’s sidekicks at the time and he jumped off the rooftop and grabbed Nestor with a gun pointed at his head.
Nestor started to cry and proper hero’s arrived and tried to get the villain to put the gun away, Jack, Dazzle and TJ were being pulled away by some hero’s sidekicks so they didn’t have to see it but they continued to struggle and call out to Nestor but the villain didn’t get what they wanted and pressed down on the trigger, and as it happened Nestor gave a small smile to his friends as he was glad it was him instead of them with tears still rolling down his cheeks.
The gun went off and every thing went quiet until the villain dropped Nestor to the ground and tried to get away but the hero’s had enough of it wanting this fight to be over as an innocent kids life was lost in the void of time.
As Nestor fell from the villains grip the kids broke free from the sidekicks grips as they were too shocked and they all sat down on their knees trying to wake Nestor telling him it was going to be ok but his body was limp and he didn’t respond to the squeeze in his hand that Jack gave.
A few minutes later once the kids were brought away from the scene they asked if anyone knew their parents number, TJ and Dazzle still couldn’t respond as they were still crying but Jack could, he was still shaking but he told them solars number stuttering on some of the numbers but still saying it emotionlessly.
That was why they did what they did so no other kid had to experience that and as Hallow Hunter looked at the billboard again he felt nothing as he turned away from it but they now had to start their patrol.
They mainly just knocked out Thieves, drug dealers and other criminals but they didn’t get much done as it was a quiet day but they got a call from Solar who told them to come home for lunch from the park as they had left a note on the kitchen bench saying they were going to the park.
They quickly teleported upstairs and changed out of their outfits and teleported back outside the front door to look like they just walked in.
Lunch was nothing special just some grilled cheese sandwiches from moon as only he, Solar and KC were home so they didn’t need to do anything special.
After lunch they went upstairs and got back into their outfits and got back out onto their patrol. Once they got back into their mindset they started to run and jump over rooftops again smiling while they ran with the wind in their hair.
Until they suddenly stopped as they noticed Wraith approaching but there was three of him.
Hallow Hunter then realised that he was using his hallucinatory fog to make it look like there was more of him so he quickly reminded them of his powers and that their tech wasn’t useful during this fight.
Fauna Fury still quickly nocked and arrow but didn’t shoot it and Cosmic Carnage got ready to summon his avatar to fight but Hallow Hunter held them back before they all sprinted into the fight as they heard the helicopter above them.
The fight went by in a blur as Wraith kept bringing more hallucinatory fog which kept Fauna Fury and Cosmic Carnage at bay while he mainly attacked Hallow Hunter until he got a good swipe at his face and hit his mask cutting it.
Wraith stopped in shock all the fog disappearing with it as he looked at Hallow Hunters eye, he had managed to cut the fabric that held his right side of his mask up and slice just below his eyebrow but he managed to grab the mask before it fully dropped and it revealed his right eye the brown eye with little bits of amber in it.
Because the fog had dropped in shock Fauna Fury and Cosmic Carnage now had once clear target as Fauna Fury shot him in the shoulder.
He quickly got over his shock but Fauna Fury had got in front of Hallow Hunter so he could try to fix his mask without taking it off and revealing more of his identity, she crouched down with her back to him with an arrow loaded at Wraith.
Cosmic Carnage had dropped the avatar and was trying to open a portal but the phase disruption from Wraith was making it hard to open one.
Fortunately he opened one time as Fauna Fury shot at Wraith again, the three of them quickly ran through the portal and it closed behind them leaving a stunned Wraith on the roof.
After they all changed they sat on the floor of TJ’s room as they determined that the cut beneath Jacks eyebrow was fine and they came up with a cover story that they were playing in the trees of the park, then Monty yelled up the stairs that it was time for dinner and they were having pizza.
The kids sprinted down the stairs because they were hungry and after grabbing their slices they sat on the couch but Nexus kept eyeing Jack for some reason.
Then they decided to watch the news and they saw the replay of the fight between Hallow Hunter, Cosmic Carnage, Fauna Fury and Wraith.
They zoomed in on when Hallow Hunters Mask broke but they only saw a brown eye as they were too far away. After they finished watching the news clip it showed the billboard motto “PROTECTORS OR PREDATORS? Whose side are they really on?” and some of the family members scoffed when that went on screen.
Sun then told the kids to go to bed but they sat on the stairs listening in on the conversation but like the night before nothing interesting happened.
