“Hioki?”
I didn’t know when it started. The tears, I mean. The smell of salt and sediment filled my senses as we sat on the empty beach, the waves crashing against the shore every couple of minutes. The sun’s orange setting hue reflected against the ocean’s water, marking the near-end of a day. A melancholic yet euphoric feeling overtook me, and the waterworks started. Watarai’s hand was against my back, patting it and calling out to me. My voice was stuck inside my throat, I couldn’t respond. I just felt so…loved. For the first time ever. Watarai made me feel full of love. It felt so nice, yet so overwhelming it hurt.
”Hioki! Hey…hey look at me.”
The sunset was ethereal, but that feeling of ending such a beautiful moment with Watarai ached. I wanted to hold onto that feeling of “forever” more than anything. I wanted to stay stuck on this beach in Watarai’s arms forever. I wanted to let the sun stay right where it was. I liked it here.
Watarai…
”Was today not fun? Did- Did I do something wrong? I’m sorry, hey, I’m sorry..” He brought me into a tight hug, his face was grimacing into nothing but concern.
I shook my head rapidly, prying him off of me. I had so much to say yet nothing to say at all. The sun illuminated his features as he stared at me, waiting for an answer almost desperately.
Watarai Tsukasa. You mean the world to me.
”I think I just…love you…” Was all I choked out.
“I love you so…much…” I repeated.
Watarai’s concerned face slowly softened, and that memorable smile of his was all I could see. His warm hands gently cupped my face, rubbing away the tears.
“Was I too intense again?”
“Stay that way…I like it when I’m overwhelmed by you.”
We couldn’t help but giggle.
“I love you too.”
I hope…I’ll be the one to get on one knee one day. I’ll be the cool one this time. I’ll propose to you under this very sunset. Just you wait, Tsukasa.
