Chapter 3
You keep looking at me like you’ve seen a ghost.” Tony grunts, almost like a snort, while shoveling food onto a tray for Peter to eat.
‘Because you are a ghost.’ Peter wants to say but instead he says, “Sorry, my head is still killing me.”
Tony looks back and sighs sadly. “Speaking of that, when do you plan on telling us what happened?” Peter’s smile tightened, almost scarily so.
His head drooped and his shoulders curved in on himself. Instead of answering, he started asking his own questions. “What was the last mission the avengers went on? I think my brain is still fuzzy, I can’t remember.” His acting was poor but in the eyes of Tony, all he saw was a hurt kid trying to remember his life.
Tony pressed his lips together, “You shouldn’t be thinking about that right now. I need you to focus on resting.”
Peter ignored his words again and pressed on, “Mr. Stark, do you remember that villain we fought named..” He stuttered and acted like he couldn’t remember the name. The name of the person that killed his family. “Thanos.”
Peter expected a reaction, any sort of reaction, yet instead he got nothing. Tony just blankly stared at him, almost like he was asking Peter to describe him further.
“That name doesn’t sound familiar. Can you describe him? Maybe I just forgot about him, you know how many villains we fight daily.” Tony grinned and sat down in a lounge chair facing the city. Peter sat down beside him but not before hesitating.
‘He doesn’t know. Thanos isn’t someone you’d just forget.’ Peter’s memories flashed through him, causing him to shutter. The dead look of Tony was not the same as the Tony sitting in front of him now.
‘Maybe this is some sort of god playing an evil trick on me.’ Peter squeezed his fingers tighter to his plate, almost begging his hands to stop shaking. They haven’t stopped shaking since he woke up. ‘Or maybe this is just an illusion after losing that much blood.’
He glanced up at Tony who was scrolling on his phone. He seemed peaceful. It was such a drastic change to Peter. ‘Whatever it is, just let me stay with him a little while longer.’
He shoveled food into his mouth, scraping the plate clean. He hasn’t had a proper meal in so long, having one now was almost like heaven to Peter. “Maybe that’s where I am. I’m probably dead.’
The more Peter thought about it, the less he cared if he was dead. At least then he can keep living with Mr. Stark.
He rubbed his eyes, sighing, “Mr. Stark-“ before he could finish, a loud bang echoed behind them.
Clint rushed over to Tony, the door swinging behind him.
“You do understand that I have to pay for the damages you cause, Clint. That door isn’t free nor is the door you just dented.” Tony arched an eyebrow at him, putting his phone into his lap.
He glanced back at the door before turning back to Tony. “That doesn’t matter right now. I can pay you later if it’s such a big deal. We’re picking up an odd signal, you should come see this.” He shoved his thumb behind him, pointing towards the doors he just came through.
“What kind of signal?” Tony sat up and started heading back to their control panel. He paused, glancing back at Peter. He was still sitting while fiddling with his fork. “It’s okay Mr. Stark. I know you’re busy.” He smiled, odd looking again.
Clint looked between them for a second before saying, “Just let the kid join. It won’t affect the sighting.” He turned and started marching back without them, waving a hand for both of them to follow.
Peter could see a twitch in Tony’s jaw for a second before motioning for Peter to follow. Of course Peter wasn’t going to say no. He needed to learn as much information as he could before something happens. This can be a good place to start.
He practically shot out of his chair and ran to catch up to the two. His food plate abandoned on the table along with an uneaten cupcake that Peter really wanted to eat.
It’s okay, he’ll snatch one up another time.
Clint led them into a dark room with glowing tech. The blue light glowed into Peter’s eyes, making him squint to re-adjust his eyes.
His face went from curiosity to confusion in a matter of seconds. In front of him were devices he’s never seen before, even when Tony was alive. All of the avengers were up on the screen. Each showed their heartbeats, emotions, injuries and more. Somehow all of them were linked together in a computer.
The massive screen in front of them changed. Well, changed wasn’t a good word to use. More like glitched. Another person appeared right below the Peter that was on the screen.
They were covered in black, not wearing black clothes but quite literally was just a silhouette. Its heartbeat was way quicker than the others and its emotions had too many words such as sad, confused, angry, and depressed. The words ran off the screen and disappeared. Their injuries showed a massive ERROR sign in bold red. But that wasn’t all. There was another category linked to this person. A distress call was sent out hours ago.
It seemed like the computer was trying to find who, where, and what happened but all it could get was the time it was sent out, 26 hours ago.
Right around the time Karen sent out a distress call to the Stark Tower. It hit Peter like a ton of bricks. ‘That’s me. But that doesn’t make any sense, why are there two Peter’s on the screen?’
His brain turned and raced for answers yet he came up with nothing. How did they have that signal? The more he thought about it, the worse the throbbing in his head continued.
He sucked in a breath, bent over and pressed a palm to his head. A beep sounded in front of him, making him flinch. Peter glanced up to see the words TERRIFIED in red under the emotions column. He huffed, almost like a laugh.
‘This is insane. This shouldn’t be possible. None of this should even exist. Why is the dead still bothering me? Have I done something wrong?’
He glanced around the room. Tony, Natasha, Clint, Captain America.. everyone was here and alive. They were muttering about the distress call.
Something in the corner of the room caught his eye, suddenly. There were robots surrounding something. It seemed like they were working on something like a suit.
Peter started walking over to it but stopped dead in his tracks. No, not any suit. His suit. ‘Why is my suit here?’ He gripped it in his hand, practically tearing it away from the robots. His heart quickened, ‘I can escape now.’
Peter turned to stare at the others in the room but not for long before his face hardened and he whipped around, bolting for the door. Tony noticed first, calling out his name. He felt his body slam through the door, for a second everything went black but he just brushed it off.
As soon as his eyes refocused, Peter froze. He was in his tower, the one he remade after Thanos died. The white covers were draped in dust. They covered the desks that had been in use just seconds before. Nobody was around, it was pitch black, and Peter felt this overwhelming sense of dread.
“Something’s wrong-“ He spun but stopped again.
There was no door behind him. The door he just ran through was now a wall. The solid concrete wasn’t something anybody could just put up in a matter of seconds, it was real.
He was back in his time.
